AUTOMATIC SAFETY GAS-VALVE.
aaaaooo.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 6, 1920.
Application filed February 5, 1919. Serial No. 275,162.
To alZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, DON C. CARVER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Cambridge, in the county of Guernsey and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Automatic Safety Gas-Valves, of which the following is a specification. k
This invention relates to automatic safety gas valves the object in view being to provide a small safety attachment for all natural and artificial gas fixtures, said attachment serving to prevent explosions caused by the accidental turning on of gas or by the failure of the gas pressure resulting in the extinguishing of the flame and followed by the explosion upon recurrent or return of normal pressure. The improved device is designed to fit the standard fixture now in universal use which may of course be made in other sizes.
lVith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement herein fully described, illustrated and claimed.
in the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the complete burner showing the cap closed.
Fig. 2 is a similar view with the cap open.
Fig. 3 is a similar view with cap partly open.
Fig. 4: is an enlarged vertical section of the same showing the cap closed.
Fig. 5 is a similar view showing the cap open.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a body of theiburncr which is of the usual formation and formed in the bottom thereof with an opening 2 for the nozzle and also formcdat the top thereof with an outlet 3 for the gaswhere it is ignited into a flame.
In carryingout the present invention. I employ a nozzle 4 loosely fitted upon the upper end of which is a slidable cap 5. The upper portion of the nozzle 4 within the body 1 is tapered or made frusto-conical as shown at 6 thereby forming a reduced upper end portion 7. Extending around the reduced portion 7 is a circumferential stop flange 8. the purpose of which will presently appear. The reduced portion 7 of the nozzlc is formed in the extreme upper end thereof with gas ports 9 separated from each oihcl' by means of intervening segments 10.
Each of the ports 9 is open at its upper extremity as shown.
The cap 5 which is slidable upon the re-' duced portion 7 of the nozzle 4 is likewise provided with gas ports 11 and intervening segments 12, the ports 11 being adapted to reglster with the ports 9 of the nozzle 4. The segments 12 are provided at their lower extremities with inwardly projecting stop lips 13 which are adapted to engage the underside of the flange 8 to limit the upward ports 9 and 11 exactly register with each other so as to insure the proper flow of gas when the cap is'in its raised position.
Extending upwardly from the center of the cap 5 is a stem 15 having a shoulder or enlargement in the form of a knob 16 at the upper extremity thereof. The stem 15 works through an elongated eye or slot 17 in the downwardly curved inner end of a rocker arm or lever 18 which is pivotally mounted at 19. The other or outer end of the rocker arm is bent downwardly to form a catch finger 20 and said finger is adapted to engage a notch-or shoulder 21 in an oscillatory cam 22 which is pivotally mounted at 23. The cam 22 is held at one limit of its movement by means of a contractile coiled spring 24 and is adapted to be actuated in opposite direction by means of a spring retracted plunger 25 slidable through an opening 26 in the body 1 of the burner. The cain 22 is formed with a shoulder 26' on one side against which the inner end of the plunger acts to impart oscillatory movement to the cam.
From the foregoing it will be observed that the rocker arm or lever 18, the coacting cam 22 and cooperating spring 24, form a spring pressed lever means for automati- I (rally holding and locking the cap in a closed is as follows 2-- I Vhen the gas is turned on the nozzle 4,
the pressure of thegas raises the cap 5 until opened to allow the gas to escape into the body 1 of the burner. Should, for any reason, the pressure of the gas diminish or be cut off, the cap 5 descends by gravity to its closed position. As the cap descends, the knob or shoulder 16 engages the adjacent arm of the rocker or lever 18 and moves said end of the arm downwardly with it. This allows the hook end 20 of the rocker arm to rise the same being lifted by the action of the cam 22 under the influence of the cam actuating spring. The rocker -arm is thus locked by the cam and in turn serves to hold the capdown tightly on the body of the nozzle preventing any escape "of gas in case the pressure should again rise. This renders the valve entirely safe-and prevents accident. In order to operate thevalve again, it is necessary to press inwardly on the plunger 25, thereby releasing the rocker arm and permitting the cap to be raisedby the gas pressure in the nozzle.
I claim An automatic safety gas valve, comprising a nozzle having, gas ports in the discharge endthereof, a cap slidably mounted upon said nozzle and also formed with corresponding gas ports, and a spring pressed lever means for automatically limiting the opening movement of said cap, said cap bemg raised by the pressure of the gas receivedin the nozzle, said spring pressed lever means also serving to hold said cap in a closed position upon the fall in the pressure of the gas, and means for releasing said spring pressed lever means from a locked position. I
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature. DON C. CARVER.-
