GAS-COCK.
Applicativi; sied :rune 1s, 1912.A serial No. 704,264.
Beit known that I, ADRIAN PYLE, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident fof Dobbs Ferry, county of Westchester', 'State of New York, have. inventedcertain new4 and useful Improvements in Gas- Coc'ks, of which the following is ay specifica. tion.
My invention relates to anl automatic-'or vsafety gas cock y which may be readily opened to any degree, but which closes positively and is automatically held in closed position, thus ei'ectually preventing any accidental opening which might resultl dis-- astrously.
My invention can readily be adapted for use with any gas fixture, replacing the usual stop cock, Vand is simple in construcend terminates lin a barrel 7 for the recep.
tion of a valve device and fromthis barrel branches the pipe 8, to which f1s secured the burner 9 and tip 10. The elbow is enlarged Where li-t meets the barrel to form a conical seat 11 for the conical valve 12, which has the piston portion 13 fitting snugly within the barrel. A stern 14 affixed to the lower portion of the piston passes' through a metal washer 15, felt washer or packing 16 and .cap 17 mounted upon the, lower end of the barrel. The stem terminates in a beaded or ratchet portion 18 adapted to engage with a pawl 19 pivoted at 20 to the stationary arm 21 forming a part of the' bracket'. Within the barrell tively shut off the gas supply.
and surrounding the stern is a s ring 22 which normally acts to force t e valve againstits seat.
When it is desired to light'thelgas, the valve 1s opened by pulling down the handie 253 and the gas 1s thereby permitted to pass throughk the valve the direction of the arrow in Fig. 2, and so into the burner. When the valve is opened to the desired eX- tent, 4the pawl is brought up into engagement with the ratchet or beaded surface,
as shown in Fig. 2, and thus caused to hold the va-l'ye open against the force. of the Specification of'Letters Patent. 'p Patented Nov. 18` 1913 spring. The closing of the valve is eftected by tripping the pawl, whereupon the spring will cause the valve to s'eat and posi- While I have illustrated and described only two embodiments of my invention, I realize that it is susceptible of wide variation and I do not desire to be limited to the precise structure set forth and described.
Having thus described my invention, I claim: V
1. A gas cock comprising a reciprocating valve, means normally tending to close said valve, a serrated stem attached to the valve head, and means for locking the valve open in a plurality of positions, including an arni pivoted to a fixed member and having a claw on one end adapted to engage said stem.
2. A gas cock comprising a reciprocating valve, means normallytending to close said valve, a serrated'stem on said valve, and means engaging said stein for locking the valve open in a plurality of positions, said means' including an arm pivoted to 'a fixed member and having a claw on one end adapted toengage ,said stem, the center of gravity of said arm lying between the claw and the point at which the arm is pivoted.
