Be it known that I, Jnss SMnLsER, a. citi Zen of the United States, residing at Topeka, in the county of Shawnee and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Doors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to doors and especially to doors for refrigerator cars, store refrigerators and refrigerators for general use.
The invention has for its object to produce a door having adjustable packing means of simple and improved construction whereby an air-tight joint may be produced between the casing and the door when the latter is closed.
A further object of the invent-ion is to produce a door having adjustable packing means and simple and improved means for actuating the same.
A further object of the invention is to v simplify and improve the general construction, arrangement and combination of the parts, entering in the construction of the improved device.
With these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction, novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter ticularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however', understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.

Fig. 7 is an enlarged cross-section taken detail view taken on fully described and par-l through one of the longitudinally slotted tubes and the rod therein. Fig. 8 is an enlarged section of a detail.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of reference.
The door A has been shown as being constructed with a face plate l5 and a back plate 16, the latter being of smaller area than the face plate so that the door will taper' in a rearward direction as is customary with this class of doors for the purpose of fitting a correspondingly tapered casing, the latter being conventionallyindicated at i7 in F ig. 2. Between the facing and back plates are formed grooves i8 extending around tlie top, bottom and sides of the door.
Fitted in the grooves bottom of the door are strips or plates i9, 2O and in the grooves at the sides of the door are fitted similar strips 2l., each of the strips 19, 20 and 2l being provided on its inner face with a reinforcing rib 22. lhe several strips 19, 20 and 2l are free to move inward and outward in the respective grooves, said strips being actuated by means which will presently be described.
Mounted for rotation in the door is a shaft or stem 23 carrying a disk el having eccen. tric slots 25, said shaft being also provided with a lever 2G located exteriorly of the face plate l5 and whereby said shaft may be rotated. Slides 27, 27 arrz'inged above and below the disk at diametrically opposite sides thereof are guided between the guide cleats 28 and said slides are provided with studs 59 engaging the eccentric slots 25 so that by rotation of the disk 2li the slides may be simultaneously projected or retracted. The slides 27, 27 carry approximately triangular' wedge members 29, 39, the parts being so proportioned and arranged that the wedge 29 carried by the slide 27 will be po sitioned approximately midway between the top and the bottom of the door. Pivotally connected with the reinforcing ribs 22 of the strips 2l at the sides of the door are arms 3l i8n at the top and carrying anti-friction members such as vrollers 32 that are engaged by the convergent edges of the wedge member 29. Thus, when the latter is projected, the strips2l will be simultaneously forced outward in the direction of the door casing while when the wedge member is retracted, the strips 2l are free to move inward in the grooves 18. For the purpose of assisting such inward or retraeting movement, retracting springs 33 may be provided, and any convenient means may be provided for the purpose of properly guiding the arms 31. Extending from the apeX of the wedge 29 is a rod 34 carrying an additional wedge 35 which obviously par takes of any movement imparted to the wedge 29, the apeXes of the wedges 35 and 30 being shown as facing respectively the top and bottom of the door.
Extending from the apices of the wedges 35 and 30 are rods 36 telescopically arranged in tubes 37 which are pivotally connec-ted with the ribs 22 of plates 19 and 2O at the top and bottom, respectively, of the door. The rods 36 are provided with lateral pins 39 slidable in slots in the tubes 37.
interposed between the pins 39 of rods 36 and osets 40X on the tubes 37 are coiled the plates 19 springs 33 designed to assist the inward movements of the rods 36, and maintain the same in engagement with the wedges 35 and 30 and at the same time yieldingly press and 2O outwardly.
Arranged for slidable movement in the direction of the Vupper and lower corners of the door are four obliquely disposed rods 40 and 41, said rods having anti-friction members such as rollers 42, 43 engaging respectively the Wedges 35, 36 by the movement of which the obliquely disposed rods may be projected outwardly in the direction of the corners of the door. 1When the wedges are retracted, the rods will be free to follow the movement of the wedges and the retracting movements of the rods may be assisted by retracting springs 44. Each of the rods 40 and 41 carries at its outer end a triangular plate 45 with which it is connected by a pivot member 46. Adjacent to each of the four corners of the door is mounted an angle plate 47, the same being pivotally secured at 4S,
said angle plate receiving between the flanges thereof the triangular plate 45 carried by one of the rods 40 and also the ends of the strips 19 and 21 or 2O and 21as the case may be. TWhen the wedges 35, 30 are project-ed, he rods 40 lcarrying the plates 45 will be correspondingly projected, thereby swinging or projecting the angle plates 47 into the corners of the door casing where tight joints will thus be formed.
:imager The top, bottom and side edges of the door are protected by a casing 49 of flexible material, such as canvas or other textile material, the same being preferably treated with paraffin, rubber or the like in order to render the same water-proof. The canvas casing 49 should be sufiiciently loose and flexible to enable it to be forced by the action of the strips 19, 20, 21 and the angle plates 45 snugly against the sides into the corners of the door casing.
When the disk 24 is turned by the lever 26 for the purpose of projecting the slides carrying the wedges and related parts, the lever may be secured and concealed in any convenient well known manner, thereby serving to maintain the door securely in its closed position. i
F rom the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, hereto annexed, the operation and advantages ofthis invention will be readily understood. The construction of the improved door is simple and thoroughly efficient for the purposes for which it is provided.
What is claimed, is
l1. The combination of a door, side and end packing strips carried by the door, angle plates pivotally connected to the door and arranged with their apices between the contiguous side and end packing strips on the door, and means for moving said angle plates outwardly and inwardly.
2. The combination of a door, side and end packing strips carried by the door, angle plates pivotally connected to the door adjacent to the four corners thereof and having their apices arranged between the contiguous ends of sideand end packing strips, wedge members, means interposed between said wedge members and the end packing strips for moving said end packing strips outwardly, means interposed between the wedge members and the angle plates for swinging said. angle plates outwardly, intermediate wedge members, means interposed between said intermediate members, and the side packing strips for moving said strips outwardly, and means for synchronously actuating the wedge members.
