Description
w. BRADLEY.
AU11-vers for Pitchers.
No. 134,586. Patented Jan. 7, 1873.
umm:
' @QM/y WALTER BRADLEY, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN COVERS FOR PITCHERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. ld, dated January 7, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER BRADLEY, of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvementv in Covers for Pitchers, of which the following is a specification The object of this invention is to provide means for keeping pitchers or cups for containing milk, water, sirup, or other substance closed when not in actual use 5 and it consists in a cover which is automatic in its action, as will be hereinafter described.
In the accompanying" drawing, Figure l is a top view, and Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of Fig. l taken on the line x a.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspending parts.
A is the pitcher or cup. B is the handle. C is the spout, and D is the automatic cover. c e are pivots attached to the cover, and projectin g from its edge outward over the riin of the pitcher. On the top of the rim are two slot-eyes, f f, Which receive the pivots. The cover is fitted to the inside of the top of the pitcher, so that its back part will tip down, as seen in Fig. 2. g is a Weight on the under side of the back part of the cover. When the pitcher stands level the cover tightly closes it,
but the cover is so nearly balanced on its piv ots that when the pitcher is tipped up, as for pouring out its contents, the cover will not tip, but will retain-its horizontal position. Fig. 2 represents the pitcher and cover in this position. Vhen the pitcher is again brought to an upright position the cover closes it. By means ofthe slots in the eyes j' f the cover is readily detached for Washing or other purposes 5 but eyes Without slots may be used.
I do not conne myself to pitchers or cups having spouts, as the automatic cover may be applied to pitchers or cups Without spouts, and the Weight on the under side of the cover may be differently arranged, or the back part of the cover may be made thicker than the front part, or the pivots may be placed so as to make the cover act automaticallyT 5 but I prefer the arrangement shown.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In combination with a pitcher or cup, the seltactin g or automatic cover D, substantially as shown and described.
Witnesses: VALTER BRADLEY.
