VALVE AND MEANS COOLING THE To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that L'AR'rI-IUR O. DADY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York in the county of New York and State of "New York, have invented a certain new and useful llmprovement in. Valves and Means for Cooling'the Same, of which the to the cooling of exhaust valves for internal combustion engines, but may be adapted for the cooling of valves in other structures.
- The objects of this invention are:
1st. To provide improved means for con veying water to the interior of the valve;
2d. To provide novel means for conducting the water| away from the valve;
3d. To provide means whereby thewater employed for cooling the cylinder of an en gine may be employed for cooling the. 3d
valves; and
lth. To so connect my improved valve with the water jacket and circulation pump that the circulation pump may be employed for maintaining a forced circulation of the water through the valve.
Further objects will definitely appear as the description progresses, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which-- Figure 1 is a more or less diagrammatical illustration showing the relation of my improved valve to the ordinary water cooling system iof an internal combustion engine; and I Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of my improved valve mechanism showing portions of a cylinder and its water'jacket.
Referring to Fig. 2 of the drawings, T will first describe my improved valve mechanism. In this figure the reference character 1 indicates the wall of a cylinder having a bore 2 and an exhaust chamber 3 communicating therewith. An exhaust port 4 communicates with the exhaust chamber 3 and is provided with a valve seat 5 with Specification of Letters Patent.

which the hollow head 6 of the exhaust valve co-a'cts to open and close the exhaust port. Mounted in a suitable bore in the water jacket is a sleeve bearing 7 which slidably receives the upper end of a hollow valve stem 8. The lower end of this valve stem slides in a bearing 9 which is formed in and extends through the water jacket 10. A tube 11, which is carried by the union 12, that is, screwthreaded into a suitable open ing in the water jacket at the lower end of the hollow valve stem 8, provides means for discharging water into the hollow valve head. 1
Referring now to Fig. 1 in which l have diagrammatically illustrated the connections between the cooling system of an in ternal combustion engineand' my improved valve, the reference character 13 indicates the exhaust manifold communication between which and the various cylinders is controlled by my improved valves which are indicated as a whole by the reference characters'V; The reference character P ind cates a pump,- driven in any suitable manner. which withdraws Water from the bottom of the radiator R- and discharges it through the pipe 14: into the water jacket of the internal combustion engine. The-reference character 15 indicates the usual pipe connection between the top of the water jacket and the top, of the radiator. Connected with the'discharge pipe 14 is a manifold 16 having branch pipes 17 which are connected at their upper ends with the union 12, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
From the above description it will be apit will withdraw water from the bottom of the radiator ft and discharge it through the manifold 16 and the branch pipes 17 into the tubes 11 which will conduct the water to the hollow heads of the valves. From these the water will beled back to the radiator bythe hollow valve stem 8.
"While the means for actuating my improved valve -form no part of my present invention l[ have illustrated such means as comprising a collar 18, which is received in an annular groove in the valve stem 8. A tappet 19 engages the lower side of the collar 18 and is mounted upon the sliding rod 20, which is actuated bythe cam 21. The lower end of the collar 18 is provided with a flange 22 which acts as an abutment for one Eli parent that when the pump P is operating site end of the sprin en end of a compression spring 23. The oppoages with the lower end of the bearing is raised the spring 23 is placed under compression and when the tappet is again lowered the compression spring returns the valve to its closed position. At 24 I have illustrated a plug which has screwthreaded engagement with a bore in the cylinder head of suflicient size to permit the insertion and removal of the valve.
While I have illustrated and described the use of a pump for maintaining circulation through the water jacket, radiator, and
valves it is to be understood that this pump may bedispensed with and thecirculation maintained by an ordinary gravity system of circulation. j
While I have illustrated the preferred form of my improved valve it is to be understood thatit is capable of other adaptations and modifications within the scope of the following claims. 7
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and, desire to secure by Letters Patent of the'United States is:
1. An internal combustion engine comprising the combination with a cylinder havinga water jacket and a port provided with a valve seatfof a reciprocable valve coacting with said seat comprising a hollow stem having a hollow head at one end and being open at the other end, a bearing for the open end of said stem extending through said water jacket and communicating there- Vhen the tappet 19 prising the combination with a cylinder having a water jacket and a port provided with a valve seat, of a reciprocable valve coacting with said seat comprising a hollow stemhaving a hollow head at one end and being open at the other end, a bearing for the open end'of said stem extending through said water jacket andcommunicating therewith, means for-discharging water into said valve head comprising a tube extending through said water jacket and into said valve stem, and means for supplying water to said tube comprising a radiator, means for establishing communication between said I water jacket and the upper end of said radiator, and means for conveying water from the lower end of said radiator to the outer end of said tube;
