KEY-MOUNT FOR WIND MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS.
Patented July 6,1920.
Application filed August 21; 1918'. Serial No. 250,769.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD J. GULIOK, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Elkhart, county of Elkhart, In-
diana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Key-Mounts for Wind Musical Instruments, of which the following is a specification. i
My invention relatesto key mounts for musical instruments, and more especially to adjustable cone bearings for the key mounts of musical wind instruments of the samphone type, although not necessarily limited to such.
An object of my invention is the production of a key mount having an adjustable cone bearing. Another object is the production of a key mount having an adjustable bearing member, the adjustment whereof is automatically maintained. Other objects of my invention will be mentioned and described herein.
The preferred embodiment of my inven-. tion is well illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is an elevation of a saxaphone fragment to which my invention is applied; Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective of one of thebearing standards of the key; Fig. 3 is an enlarged view of one of the bearing pins; and Fig. 4: is a view in elevation showing the adjustable mounts assembled and the key carried thereby. Similar numerals of reference indicate similar members and parts of members throughout the several views on the drawings. I r j Referring to the drawings in detail, the numeral 1 indicates a fragment of a musical wind instrument of the saxaphone type which is provided with the usual keys 2, the latter being pivotally mounted upon the adjustable bearings hereinafter described.
The key 2 is provided with an arm 3 hav ing a pair of oppositely disposed trunnions 4, 4. The end of each trunnion 4: is provided with a conical recess 5 adapted to be engaged by the conical point6 of the trunnion bearingpin 7, of which there are two, each of said pins being carried by a bearing standard 8 rigidly fastened on the wall of the instrument 1. The bearing pins 7 are screw threaded into axially arranged pin apertures 9, 9 formed through the head 19 of each standard 8, the rear end of each pin 7 being slotted at 11 to enable screw driver engagement for the adjustment thereof in its bearing aperture 9 for taking up wear in the cone bearing.
Each pin aperture 9 is formed eccentrically in the standard head 10 andtoward the'top thereof, said head being incised, or slit, at 12 substantially parallel with the aperture 9, said slit being in communication with the threaded aperture 9 for its full length. The screw threads of each pin 7 engage the threads of the aperture 9 with a relatively'tight fit, whereby. the incised, or furcated, head 10 is slightly spread when said pin is screwed therein, thereby automatically causing a clamping or gripping of the pin by the prongs of the furcated head 10 and effectually preventing casual rotation of the pin 7.
I claim:
1. In a musical instrument of the class described, a key adapted for pivotal movement; a transversely apertured and furcated key bearing member or standard, the furcation whereof is normally contractile; a bearing pin adjustably mounted within the aperture of said bearing standard, the adjustment of said pin-being maintained by the contractile force exerted thereon by the prongs of the furcated bearing standard; and a cone and. cup bearing connection between said key and said pin. r
2. In a musical instrument of the class described, a key adapted for pivotal movement; a transversely apertured and furcated key bearing standard, the furcation whereof is normally contractile; a bearing pin screw threaded within the aperture of said bearing standard and adjustable therein, casual rotation of said pin being prevented by the contractile force exerted thereon by the prongs of the furcated bearing standard; and a cone and cup bearing connection between said key and said pin.
3. A device of the class described comprising a key adapted for pivotal movement; a pair of transversely apertured and furcated key bearing standards, the furcation whereof is normally contractile; a pair of bearing pin members screw threaded Within the apertures of said key hearing In testimony whereof I have hereunto 10 standards and adjustable therein, casual aflixed my signature the 19th day of Aurotation of said pins being prevented by the gust, 1918.
contractile force exerted thereon by the prongs of the furcated bearing standards; EDWARD J. GULICK.
and. a cone and cup bearing connection between sald key and said pins.
