APPLICATION FILED JULY 19, 1919.
WITITESS INVENTOR.

UNITED STATES ATENT, FFICE:
,HARRY E. rowEtL, F, AnnEnsoiv, fINniA Q q an-s arse.
T0 aZZ whomit may concern:
Be it knownthat I, HARRY EJPOWELL, a'
' citizen of the United States, residing atAnderson, in the county of Madisonand State of Indiana, have inventednmv and useful Improvements in Bed-Springs, of which the following is a specification. v a v This invention has reference to improverected to the frames for bed springs,
The object of the invention is to produce a bed spring frame of a novel construction wherein the tension of the springs may be readily regulated and also wherein the parts constituting the framemay be separated for conveniencein handling, storage, etc., means being'provided whereby the said parts may be easily and quickly assembled. a
A further object of the invention is to produce a frame for bed springs that shall be light, strong, durable but which at the same time may be manufacture'd'with compara tive cheapness.
Other objects and advantages will'present themselves as the nature of the invention is.
better understood, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is an enlarged side elevation of one of the corners of a frame illustrating the manner of adjusting the bracket on the side member or rail of the frame.
V Fig. 2 is a sectional View approximately on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the compressible sleeve and the elements associated therewith.
Fig. 4 is a view of the rotatable element one of the faces of the member '38 is a wheel having the cam wheel thereon.
The'side rails of my improved frame are preferably in the nature of tubes, in any event being round in crosssection. While I only one end member is illustrated by the drawings, it is, of course, to be understood that two of such members areemployed in the construction of the frame.
tom is secured.
On'the rail 10', inward of the bracket 14" is a sleeve 28 which'is in the nature of a split member having at its slitted side outwardly extending lugs 29'29 which, of 2 course, are spaced from each other but are Specification of Letters latcflt. l ajiented 7 Application mea'iul is, 1919.; Serial K043113920.1
arranged in parallelism so that oneis disposed directly :overtheother.) The lower opening 30. Through ftheseopenings pass the threaded shankz32 of a bolt membery thehead of the'said bolt member,a s indicated '65 by thenumeral 33, rests upon the outer face of the 111g '29 provided with the opening 31' whenthe threaded shank thereof engages withthe threads in the opening 30 and com-' presses the lugs'toward each other to force the split sleeve 29 into frictional engage- The sleeve,
ment with the side rail 10. upon what I will term the outer face thereof has formed thereon a centrally disposed plate 34 that projects a suitable distance below the sleeve and has, adjacent its lower end a transverseopening 35. On the plate .34, approximately centrallyo'fthe bore of the sleeve 28 is astub shaft 36 having a" threadedsocket 37 entering centrally from its outer end.
The numeral 38 designates a revoluble member which is preferably fiat and provided with a round'periphery. This member is centrally'formed with an opening 39 that is received on the stub shaft 37, and the said member, adjacent to its periphery is provided with spaced round openings 40 any one of which being. designed to register with the opening 35 in the plate 34:, and passing through 'these registering openings is a pin '40 that has its head portion enlarged and knurled, the said head being indicated by the numeral 41. Eccentrically formed on 42. It will be apparent that when the mem ber 38 is turned on the stub shaft 36 the cam wheel 42 will be brought, into engagement with the inner end of the barrel .13 of the bracket 14:, and asthe bed springs areattached to thebracket, it will be apparent that, by properly adjusting the wheel 40 the cam wheel 42 thereon; will retain the bed springs at proper tension.
* On the outer face of the stub shaft'is washer 43 having a central opening, and passingthrough the saidopening and engaging with the threads in the bore 37 is a bolt member 44. i 1
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed asnew, is 7 bedand a longitudinally movable spring 1. In combination with the side rail of a I carrying bracket on the end thereof; of
means carried by thesaid rail contactingv with the bracket for limiting and adjusting the inward movement of the bracket on-the rail, said means comprising a pivoted rotary memberlsecured on the rail and an eccentricallymounted disk thereon, and means also carriedby the rail and engaging with said disk for holding the same in contact with thegbracket. I
v 2. In combinationwith the siderail of a bed and a'longitudinally movable spring carrying bracket on the end of said rail; of
V meansyfor limitingand' adjusting the inward movement of the bracket on said rail,
comprising a sleeve secured to the rail, an
apertured plate thereon, a stub'sha'ft carhaving spaced apertures adjacent 'to the-pe-o Vriphery thereof, an eccentrically mounted wheel on one of the faces of the saidmember 'designedito contact with the inner end ofv the bracket, and'anelement adapted to pass through the apertured plate of the sleeve and one of the apertures in the revoluble. disk for regulating the contacting engagementfof the eccentrically arranged Wheel with the inner end of thebracket.
l. In testimony whereof-I aflix my signature.-
HARRY E. P WELL,
