CIothes-Wringers.
Patented Dec. 31, 1872 Wiliiesmw.

Jenn POAGE, or CINCINNATI, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE QUEEN crrr WRINGER COMPANY, on sun; PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLOTHES-WRINGERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 13$,d85, dated December 31, 1872.
To all whom it may concerns Be it known that I, JOHN N. POAGE, of Gincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes Wringers; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawing making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a roller and crank combined in accordance with my improved method, and Fig. 2- is a perspective view of said parts detached.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
Much time and skill have been expended in improving the general features of wringers but one of their principal points-the attachment of the operating-crank to or upon the roller-is now and has been for years a source of annoyance and discomfort to the operators, most of whom, having little or no mechanical skill, are unable to favor the weak point of the machine; and consequently are disposed to forego the many and good features because of the one objection.
To remove this difiicult-y and render impracticable the accidental disengagement of the crank from the roller is the design of my invention; which consists in a roller-shaftprovided with a screw-thread for the reception of the hub of a crank and a second thread turning in an opposite direction, for the reception of a jam or binding nut, when said shaft is combined with a crank and jam or binding nut, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
In the annexed drawing, A represents a wringer-roller provided with a central metal shaft, 13, in the usual manner. Upon one end the shaft B is reduced somewhat in diameter, so as to form a shoulder, I), and upon such reduced portion is provided a screw-thread, b, made preferably to turn to the right. The threaded portion I) has a length slightly less than the length of the hub c of the crank O, and from the end of the former to the end of jam-nut is screwed to place by being turned in a direction opposite to that required by the crank, it is impracticable for the latter to turn backward while said nut is in position, as such motion of said crank would tend to tighten rather than to loosen the nut.
Although the crank-screw is preferably con structed right-handed because the principal motion of the crank is in such direction, it will be seen that the result produced would be the same if said thread were lefthanded, so long as the jam-nut thread turned in an opposite direction.
This method of locking the crank in place upon the shaft is so simple as not to increase the cost. of the wringer, while at the same time its efficiency will materially enhance the usefulness and value of said article.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new 1s- The rollershaft B provided with the reduced portions 1) and 1; having screw-threads turn- Witnesses: 2/
