IMPROVEMENT IN FLY-WHEELS FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 204,954, dated June 18, 1878 application filed May 10, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT DECKER, of Kankakee, in the county of Kankakee and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Fly-Wheel for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical central section of my improved flywheel for sewing-machines, and Fig. 2 an end view of the driving-shaft with fly-wheel detached.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to such improvements in the fly or band wheels of sewing-machines that the fly-wheel may be allowed. to turn loosely on its shaft when winding up the bobbin, so as to prevent the running of the machine, save the wear of the same, and dispense with the necessity of taking the work out of the machine while'winding up the bobbin.
' The invention consists of a fiy-wheel that is applied, either fixed or loose, by means of a fixed collar and by a detachable outer collar, to the end of the main shaft of the sewingmachine, in connection with an adjustable clamp-screw.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the main shaft of a sewing-machine, and B the fly or band Wheel of the same. The hub of the fly-Wheel is secured to the end of the drivingshaft A by means of a stationary collar, a, of the shaft, and by a loose collar, 1), that is placed on the outermost square end of the driving-shaft A.
A thumb-screw, 0, screws into a socket-hole in the end of the shaft, andis readily adjusted so as either to tighten or loosen the fly-wheel by the clamping or loosening of the collars on the same. By firmly clamping the Wheel between the collars it is used in the usual manner as a fiy-wheel, while by loosening it the bobbin may be wound. In one case the flywheel is tightly tightened to the shaft as the movable collar changes its position longitudinally but not axially on .the end of the shaft, so as to equalize the running of the machine, while by loosening the screw the bobbin may be wound Without running the machine, as the fly-wheel-revolves loosely on the end of the driving-shaft. In this mannera convenient, cheap, and simple arrangement of the fiy-wheel is obtained, that admits the winding of the bobbin without removing the work from the machine, and without running the machine while the bobbin is wound.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the main shaft of a sewing-machine, having a fixed collar and square end, of a fly-Wheel placed loosely thereon, and clamped by a loose outer collar and adjustable clamp-screw, substantially as shown and described.
