To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ABE SAMSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cedarhurst, in the count of Nassau, Long Island, and the State of i ew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spark-Plugs, of which the following is a specification.
One object of my invention is to provide a spark plug which will have a central electrode that can be easily and quickly removed for cleaning purposes and to permit priming of the engine.
Another object is to so construct my improved spark plug that when in use the parts will be securel .locked in position to prevent accidental dislodgment.
A further object is to produce a spark plug havin the above qualifications which can be quickly and easily manufactured, as selnbled and taken apart.
These objects, and other advantageous ends which will be described hereinafter,

Referring to the drawings, 5 represents the body portion of the electrode which is made of metal and is provided with screw threads 6 to permit it to be screwed into a tapped hole in the engine cylinder in the usual manner of attaching spark plugs. The body portion 5 is made hollow to permit a porcelain insulator 7 to be inserted therein, said insulator having an enlargement 8 designed to seat upon a washer 9 which rests u on a shoulder 10 of the body portion 5. gland nut 11 has a screw threaded stem 12 which fits the upper internal screw threaded portion 13 of the body portion 5; the lower end of said gland nut serving to hold the enlargement 8 of the insulator 7 firmly within the body portion.
The general characteristics of the parts thus far specifically described may be of any of the usual forms employed in the construction of spark plugs with the exception that the lower part 14 of the insulator 7 is preferably made in accordance with my invention, of such size as to completely fill the opening 15 of the body portion 5.
In carrying out my invention, I provide the insulator 7 with a central hole 16 which extends entirely therethrough from top to bottom and also provides two notches 17 and 18 which extend downwardly from the top end surface 19 of the insulator 7 and transversely to the axis of the hole 16 as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
A hollow tube 20 fits within the hole 16 and has its lower end screw threaded as shown in 21. A nut 22 is provided for connection with the screw threaded portion 21, said nut being adapted to be turned within the recess 23 in the bottom of the insulator 7 V The upper end of the tube 20 has an integral head 24 which has an internally screw threaded cavit 25 extending downwardly from it stop. he bottom surface 26 of the head 24 is adapted to rest upon the upper end 19 of the insulator 7. The head 24 is provided with two pins 27 and 28 which project downwardly from the bottom surface 26 into the respective notches 17 and 18. Thus the pins 27 and 28 within the notches 17 and 18 prevent the tube 20 from rotating relatively to the insulator 7, and the head 24 and nut 22 prevent the tube 20 from moving longitudinally with respect to the insulator when the parts are assembled as shown in Fig. 1.
An electrode 29 is made in the form of a wheel, as clearl shown in Fig. 4, and ineludes a central hole 30 and openings 31. Two tongues 32 and 33 on said electrode are secured to the body portion 5 in such manner that the hole 30 is in alinernent with the axis of the tube 20.
An electrode 34 is'the form of a rod extends entirely through the tube 20 and into the hole 30. This electrode rod 34 is of less diameter than the hole 30, so that the distance between the electrode rod 34 and the inner surface of the hole 30 provides the gap across which the spark jumps.
The electrode rod 34 is rigidly connected with the thumb nut 35 and the latter has a 'depending screw threaded shank 36 which is adapted to screw within the head 24. A gasket 37 which can be made of any resilient material that will form a seal. is interposed between the thumb nut 35 and the top of the head 24 so that when said thumb nut is screwed down the gasket 37 will be compressed and prevent any leakage of gas or other material due to the explosion. he upper end of the electrode rod 3a is screw threaded at 38 and is provided with a binding nut 39, so that an electric wire or connection can be clamped between the binding nut and the top of the thumb nut to convey electric current to the electrode rod.
The pairs of my improved spark plug can be easily removed and assembled, for example to remove the electrode rod 34 for cleaning or priming purposes, it is merely necessary to unscrew the thumb nut 35 from the head 24. In assembling the tube 20 it is merely necessary to insert the tube into the hole 16 through the top of the insulator 7 until the pins 27 and enter the notches 17 and 18. After this the nut 22 can be screwed upon the threaded portion 21 of the tube 20 by the use of a pin Wrench or other suitable means until the nut firmly seats within the recess 23.
While I have described my invention as taking a particular form, it will be understood that the various parts of my invention may be changed without departing froni the spirit thereof, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction set forth; but consider that I am at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is:
1. A spark plug including an insulator having a hole; a tube within said hole, said tube having a head at one end; an electrode rod extending through said tube; and means formed jointly between said head and the outer end of the insulator for preventing relative rotatable movement between the insulator and the tube whereby the electrode rod can be screwed in said tube without the tube rotating relatively to the insulator; substantially as described.
2. A spark plug including an insulator having a hole: a tube within said hole, said tube having a nut screwed on one end and adapted to engage said insulator, said tube also having an enlarged head at its oppothereon, said nut having a site end adapted to engage the upper end of said insulator, said end of the insulator having notches therein; means on said head extending into said notches whereby the tube is locked against rotation relatively to the insulator; an electrode rod extending through said tube; and a not on said electrode rod and connected to said head, substantially as described.
3. A spark plug including an insulator having a hole; a tube within said hole, said tube having a nut screwed on one end and adapted to engage said insulator, said tube also having an enlarged head at its opposite end adapted to engage the upper end of said insulator, said end of the insulator having notches in its outer end; means on said head extending into said notches whereby the tube is locked against rotation relatively to the insulator; and an electrode rod extending through said tube and having a nut V screw threaded head having a screw threaded which said threaded portion of the nut fits, substantially as described.

A spark plug including an insulator having a hole; a tube within said hole, said tube having a nut screwed on one end and adapted to engage said insulator, said tube also having an enlarged head at its opposite end adapted to engage the upper end of said insulator, said end of the insulator having notches therein; means on said head extending into said notches whereby the tube is locked against rotation relatively to the insulator; an electrode rod within said tube and having a nut thereon, said nut having a screw threaded portion, said head having a screw threaded portion into which said threaded portion of the nut fits; and a gas portion, said portion into ket interposed between said head and said,
nut to form a seal, substantially as described.
