Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented duly d. i919.
Application med January 2G, 1918. Serial No. 213,956.
Be it known that l, JOSEPH S. FAUTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bloomfield, in the county of Essex and State of N ew Jersey, have invented new and useful improvements in Spark-Plugs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in spark plugs adapted for use in igniting the gasn internal. combustion engines.
One object of the invention is to provide an improved forni of spark plug which embodies a movable electrode which is actuated by the vibratory action of the engine and also by the inrush and explosion or" the charge, and which prevents the deposition of carbon at the sparkin point and thereby readily increases the einciency of the spark plug and of the engine in which the spark plug is used.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved spark plugv which embodies a core or insulatine' sleeve which comprises an inner section or mica and an outer section or member ci filier7 detachably connected to themica section by the conducting rod which `forms the inner electrode.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
ln the accompanying` drawings Figure l is a vertical central sectional view ot a s arl; plug constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan of the same.
Fig. 3 is a detailed sectional view ci the same on a larger scale.
The base l of the spark plug is here shown as provided with the usual screw plug 2- and with the usual polygonal head 3 which may vbe engaged and turned by a wrench. at
the inner/end of the screw plug 2 is a cross bar llwhich extends centrally thereacross,
the said cross bar being provided with a central circular opening 5 the wall ot which is chamfered on opposite sideto form an annular substantially knife like edge 6.'
,A movable electrode nut is rovided which is in the shape of a dumb-be l 'comprising a ing 5 so -that the said movable electrode. is
loosely mounted in said opening and is adapted to describe oscillating motions.
The core of the spark plug' comprises an inner member 10 which is made of mica and an outer member 1l which is made of fiber. rlhe inner member is fitted in the base andis formed with an enlarged annular shoulder i2 which is engaged and held and firmly clamped in place in the base by means of the usual sleeve nut 13. A conductor rod lll.- extends centrally through the members l0 and 11 of the core and is provided at the inner ends with an enlarged semi-spherical head l5 which forms an electrode which is opposed to a movable electrode 8. A jam nut 16, which is preferably made of brass is screwed to the outer end of the conductor rod and bears on the outer end of the fiber head or electrode i5 of the conductor rod-to firmly and yet detachably secure the meub bers l0 and il oi the core together.
Owing to the construction of the movable electrode with the oppositely arranged head 9, and the provision of the oppositely beveled side of the wall of the'opening 5 in which the stem or shank of the said elec trode is mounted, the said velectrode is balanced and is caused to move and swing from side to side when the engine is in operation and to continually strike the electrode 15 and thereby yprevent the deposition of carbon thereon.
Having thus described my invention l claiin:` v
l.- A spark'plug having a fixed electrode and also having 'a bar spaced from said fixed electrode and provided with an opening, and a movable electrode comprising a shank and enlarged heads at the opposite ends of the shank, said shank extending through and being loosely mounted in said opening for oscillation and the heads being on opposite sides of said bar.
Theil 2. A spark plug having :L fixed electrode movable electrode comprising a shank eX- and also having e bar spaced from said fixed tending through said opening and loose electrode and provided with a circular opentherein and enlarged heads at the ends of 1 ing opposite said fixed electrode, the Wall' of said shank. l 2
5 seid opening being beveled on opposite sides, In testimony whereof I afx my signature.
and a, movable electrode loosely mounted `for oscillatory movement in said opening, said JOSEPH S.r FAUTH.
