PATENT ()FFlCE.
I ARTHUR E. HAUCK, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
rnEHEArme-runNAcn ron WELDING CASTINGS.
T 0 all whom it may concern: k
Be it known that I, ARTHUR E. HAUGK, a citizen of the United States, and aresident of the city of New York, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Preheating-Furnaces for Welding Castings, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a furnace on which a casting or other object may be placed and properly preheated before welding so that the welding heats will not crack or injure it.
A further object is to provide a cheap, durableand efficient furnace of this character. These objects are accomplished by my invention, one embodiment of which is hereinafter more particularly set forth.
For a more particular description of my invention, reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, in which- Figure 1 is a plan View of my improved furnace.
Figs. 2 and 3 are sectional views taken on the lines 22 and 33 respectively, of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figs. 41- and 5 are perspective views of my improved form of fire brick, Fig. 4: showing the top, and Fig. 5 the bottom.
Throughout the various views of the drawings, similar reference characters des ignate similar parts.
My improved furnace 1 is mounted on legs 2 or any other suitable supports, and is provided with an outer casing 3 which is lined with fire brick 4 which is laid both horizontally and vertically so as to divide the furnace into three chambers 5, 6 and 7. The upper edge of the casing 3 is preferably provided with an angle 8 which. surrounds the same, as indicated. The casing 3 has openings at one end opposite which two burners 9 are placed,-which burners are opposite the chambers 5 and 7 respectively, and the flames from these burners pass through these chambers to the end walls and thence through openingsiinto the chamber 6, as indicated.
Each vertically disposed fire brick tcarries a metal division plate 10 and also a top fire brick 11, and at each end of each fire brick 11 is a metal division plate 12 which runs perpendicular to the plate 11.
Specification 0f Letters Patent Patented June 29, 1920.
Application filed January 8. 1920. .Serial No. 350,148.
The outside division plates 1(land 12 are 3 preferably held in .position'by' means of a lining of-fire brick or fire clay 13 or any other suitable substance.
The top fire bricks 11 are all identical and each is provided with an upwardly arched bottom 14- with diagonally disposed perforations 15 which open in a central groove 16 in the top of the fire brick and also extend to top side grooves 17, as shown. The purpose of these grooves is to permit flames to pass through the burners and lick the bottom of anything that may be placed on the division plates 10 and 12. It will be noted thatv when the apparatus is set for use, as shown, these division plates extend well above the top fire bricks and protect them so that when the casting is heated, its
expansion will take place on the division plates and not on the fire brick. Furthermore, when put in place, the casting will not rest directly on the top fire brick in any event so that the bricks are protected and space is always available for the flame action above described.
In view of the foregoing, the operation of my improved furnace will bereadily understood. Assuming that a suitable fuel is provided and the burners 9 are in operation in a normal way, flames from these burners pass down through the chambers 5 and 7 and back through the chamber 6 and thence back into the chambers 5 and 7 so forming an endless flame, and smaller flames pass through the holes 15 into the recess 16, and when a casting is over the fire bricks 11, these flames will pass into the recesses 17 and reach upwardly and lick the bottom of the casting so as to thoroughly heat the same and make it ready for Welding. As the casting expands, as above stated, it will expand on the division plates 10 and 12 and do no injury to the furnace.
While I have shown and described one embodiment of my invention, it is obvious that it is not restricted thereto, but is broad enough' to cover all structures that come within the scope of the annexed claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A furnace provided with flame chambers, top fire bricks with perforations over said chambers and division plates adapted to receive and support a casting surrounding said top fire bricks.
2. A top fire brick for furnaces provided with a central top recess, holes running therefrom to the bottom and side recesses connected to the central recess.
3-. A top brick for furnaces comprising an arched bottom with a central recess and diagonally disposed passages running to said bottom.
at. A furnace provided with a casing and three chambers, means for heating two of said chambers directly and connections between these two chambers and the remaining chamber, whereby the remaining chamber may be heated, top fire bricks over said chambers and division plates supporting the top fire bricks so that a casting may be heated on the furnace out of contact with the top fire bricks.
5. A heating furnace with three parallel chambers, one on each side of the center chamber, openings between the center chamber and side chambers, an end opening for each side chamber, perforations in the top of each chamber and burners opposite the end openings of the side chambers, whereby flames may be blown into the side chambers, return through the center chamber and re enter their respective side chambers and also protrude through the top openings in all chambers.
ARTHUR. E. HAUCK.
