UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEVI M. BOWMAN, OF TULSA, OKLAHOMA, ASSIGNOR OF ONEJ-IALF TO W. A. SMITH,
OF TULSA, OKLAHOMA.
CASKET.
Application filed May 28, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEVI M. BOWMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tulsa, in the county of Tulsa, and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Caskets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in caskets or linings therefor, and has for one of its objects the provision of a device of this character constructed of a plurality of metallic sections, whereby the device may be shipped in a knocked down condition to the undertaker or the like, and then readily assembled.
Another object of this invention is the provision of means for hermetically sealing the joints of the sections, so that the corpse can be kept an indefinite length of time without becoming decomposed.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a casket of the above-stated character, which will be simple, durable and eflicient, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
With these and other objects in view, as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features .of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a side elevation of a casket constructed in accordance with my invention,
Fig. 2 is a top plan View, partly in section, of the same,
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view, illustrating the joint, taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail sectional view, illustrating the means for securing the cover to the walls of the casket,
Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail sectional view, illustrating the manner of securing the joints of the side and bottom walls, and
Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail sectional view,

illustrating the manner of securing a glass plate to the cover, so that the corpse can be readily viewed.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates as an entirety a casket or lining therefor, and which is constructed from a plurality of metallic sections including side walls 2, bottom wall 3, and a cover 4;. The sections of the casket 1 may be constructed of copper, zinc, or any other material suitable for the purpose, and are provided with a plurality of bulged reinforcing ribs 5 to add rigidity to the metallic sections. By having the sections reinforced in the manner described the device will be capable of withstanding the pressure of earth or dirt thereon when the usual outer box constructed of wood has become decayed.
The bottom wall 3 has formed upon its edges upwardly and inwardly inclined attaching flanges 6, which cooperate with upwardly and inwardly directed attaching flanges 7 formed on the lower edges of the side walls 2 when the side and bottom walls are assembled. The flanges 6 and 7 are held together by sealing strips 8 of substantially U-shape in cross section, and which are preferably constructed of copper, zinc or like material, and are thoroughly coated with solder, so that when the strips have been applied to the flanges, a soldering iron, or torch, may be applied thereto for causing the solder to adhere to the flanges, thereby establishing a hermetical seal between the flanges.
The ends of the side walls 2 are curved to form the usual end walls to the casket 1, and are provided with inwardly directed attaching flanges 9, which are secured together by sealing strips 8. A right angled flange 10 is formed upon the upper edge of each of the side walls 2, and is provided with a vertically disposed attaching flange 11. The cover 4 is substantially oval shaped and rests upon the angular flanges l0 and is provided with attaching flanges 12, which engage the inner faces of the attaching flanges 11, so that the sealing strips 8 can readily be placed thereon for securing said flanges together.
The cover l is provided with an opening 13 at the front end of the casket 1, which is closed by a glass bulged panel 14. The panel 14 is mounted within a ring 15 that is coated or treated with solder, so that the same can be readily soldered to the cover for retaining the panel 14 over the opening 13.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is to be noted the aforedescribed seal may be also employed for sealing metal boxes, trays, cans adapted for shipping oil and especially articles constructed from zinc.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention what E claim is:
A casket including side and bottom metallic reinforced walls, upwardly and inwardly directed flanges formed on the edges of the bottom wall, upwardly and inwardly di reoted flanges formed on the lower edges of the side walls and abutting the first named flanges, substantially U-shaped sealing strips in cross section securing the flanges together, means securing the ends of the side walls together, right angled flanges formed on the upper edges of the side walls, vertically disposed flanges formed 011 the right an 'led flanges, a metallic reinforced cover seatec on the right angled flanges, vertically disposed flanges formed on the cover and abutting the first named vertically disposed flanges, and sealing strips securing the right angled flanges together.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
