To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, DANIEL C. Srin- L1VAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Elizabeth, inthe county of Union and State of New Jersey, GEORGE L. IIAWKINS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, and WVIL- LIAM J MACMILLAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Roselle, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved lVire- Drawing Machine, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved fine wire drawing machlne, arranged to permit of reducing two wires simultaneously with the same source of power, and to allow stopping the reduction and removal of either of the wires without stopping the drawing or reducing operation of the other wire.
In order to produce the desired result, use is made of two parallel shafts, conical drawing rolls mounted on the ends of said shafts, stationary dies intermediate the rolls on the corresponding ends of the said shafts, winding drums on which wind the drawn wires, a driven mainshaft, driving means connecting the said driven shaft with one of the said drawing roll shafts, and driving means connecting the said driven shaft with the said winding drums to rotate'the same in unison with the said drawing rolls.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

The duplex wire drawing machine is mounted on a suitably constructed frame. 10

The ends of the shaft 12 project beyond the bearings 11 and on the ends of the said shaft 12 are keyed or otherwise secured drawing rolls 20 and 21 which are of conical or step form with suitable flanges between the steps, as plainly indicated in Figs. 1 and 2. A second set of such conical or stepped rolls 22, 23 are mounted on the ends of a shaft 24 arranged parallel to the shaft 12 and journaled in bearings 25 mounted on the main frame 10. Intermediate the rolls 20 and 22 is arranged a set of dies 30 and a similar set of dies 31 is arranged intermediate the rolls 21 and 23, the said dies 30 and 31 being of usual construction and being secured to the main frame 10.
The wires are guided to the drawing rolls 20 and 21 by passing over guide rollers 40 and 41 journaled on the rear end of the main frame 10, and the wires after leaving the largest steps on the drawing rolls 20 and 21 are guided by fixed guides 42 and 43 to conical winding drums or blocks 50 and 51 secured on the upper ends of drum shafts 52 and 53 journaled in suitable bearin s 54, 55 arranged on the main frame 10. On the lower end of the winding drum shafts 52 .and 53 are mounted to slide friction clutch the countershaft 74 is secured a pulley 76 connected by a belt 77 with a pul ey 78 secured on the main shaft 16 so that when the latter is rotated a simultaneous rotary motion is given to the drawing rollshaft 12 and the countershaft 74 connected with the windin drums 50 and 51. %he clutch members 60 and 61 are engaged 'by shifting levers and 81 to permit the operator in charge of the machine to move the clutch members 60 and 61 independently one of the other in and out of engagement with their mating clutch members 62, '63. The clutch levers 80 and 81 are pressed on by springs 82, 83 attached to the main frame 10 to normally hold the clutch members 60 and 61, in yielding engagement with the clutch members 62 and 63. When it is desired to disengage the clutch member 60 from its clutch member 62 then the operator swings the vclutch lever 80 upward thus disengaging the clutch member 60 from the clutch member 62 to stopthe rotation of the "winding drum 50- without stopping the rotation of the winding drum 51'. In a like manner, the clutch member 61 may be moved out of engagement with the clutch member 63 to stop the rotation of the winding drum 51 without stop- I ing the rotation of the winding drum 50.

Suitable hoods and 91 are mounted on the main frame 10 and extend over the corresponding pairs of drawing rolls '20 :and 22 and their dies 30,.and the drawing rolls 21, 23 and their die 31.
The operation is as follows: Thetwo wires to be drawn simultaneously pass over the guide rollers 40, 11 to the smallest steps of the drawing rolls 20 and 21 and are wound once or twice around the small steps and then pass around the next corresponding steps of the idler drawing rolls .22 and .23 to then pass through the corresponding dies 30, 31 back onto the second steps of the driven drawing rolls 20 and '21, and the wires are then passed forward and backward from one roll to the other and through the dies 30 and 31 in the usual manner to finally pass from the'largests'teps of the drawing rolls 20 and '21 onto the winding drums 50 and 51 to be wound up thereon.
It will be noticed that by the arrangement described two wires are simultaneously drawn by the machine with the same source of power actuating both sets of drawing devices. When one wire is finished and wound up on its corresponding winding drum 50 or 51such drum can be stopped by swinging the corresponding shifting lever 80 or 81 upward to disengage the clutch member -60 or 61 from the clutch member 62 or 63. Thus the finished wire can be removed from its winding drum while the other wire is still running through the machine. v
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent;-
1. In a wire drawing machine, a shaft, a conical drawing roll "on each end of the shaft, a pulley on the shaft between the rolls, a second shaft parallel with the first shaft, an idler "conical drawing roll on each end of the second shaft, stationary dies between the rolls on the corresponding ends around the said pulley and the pulley on the having a pulley thereon, "a belt passingroll shaft, a counter shaft connected with and driven from the "ma-in shaft, clutch shafts, gearing between the clutch shafts and counter shaft, clutches connecting the clutch shafts 'withthe winding drum shafts, and clutch shifting means for shifting "the clutches independently .of one another.
2. In a wire drawing machine, two parallel shafts, conical drawing rolls mounted on the ends of the said shafts, stationary dies intermediate the rolls on the corresponding ends of the said shafts, winding drums on which windjthe drawn "wires, a driven main shaft connected with and'driving one of the "said drawing -roll shafts, a countershaft connected with and driven from th said main shaft, clutch shafts, gearing etween the clutch shafts and the said countershaft, winding drum shafts carrying the said winding drums, clutches having 'fixed and movable clutch members of which the fixed clutch members are securedxon the clutch shafts and the movable clutch members are mounted to slide on said winding drum shafts and rotate with the same, shifting levers connected "with the said movable clutch members, and means holding the shifting levers in position at the time the movable clutch members are out gf engagement with the :fixed clutch memers.
'3.
