To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVILLIAM H. ZEIGLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Spark-Plugs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to spark plugs for use in connection with explosive engines, and more particularly to' carbon removers therefor.
Some of the objects of the invention are: to provide carbon removing means at the lower end of one of the electrodes of a spark plug, said means embodying a plurahtyof spark points and being adapted to rec1procate under the action of the explosion within the spark chamber to which a plug is ap plied and the ordinary vibratlons ofthe engine in operation, to minimize the accumulation of carbon; to provide a reciprocating element at the lower end of one electrode having a plurality of spark points and gaps reducing the possibility of spark interruption from carbon accumulations to a mlnimum and rendering the plug practically infallible for the intermittent continuity of sparks; to provide a plug in which is employed a bushing for associatlng the core with the shell of the plug, which is in reality the ground electrode and so arranged and of as to establish the proper spark gaps regardless of the position of the cleaning element and its spark points. With these and other objects in view the invention resides in the particular construction and correlation of parts which will be fully described in the following specification and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification.
In the drawings Figure 1 's a central vertical sectional View of a spark plug embodying my invention.

Referring now to the drawing, it will be seen, that the spark plug is to comprise an outer shell or casing which accommodates a porcelain core 11 carrying the usual central electrode 12. The electrode 12 is of suficient length to receive at the upper end Specification of Letters Patent.

thereof a terminal nut 13 having the usual terminal clip slot and a lock nut with which and a second nut on the electrode arranged within the hollow apron 14 of the core 11, serve to hold the electrode in place. A cop per and asbestos gasket is arranged between the nut and one wall of the cavity formed The core is provided with an enlarged portion 15 disposed intermediate the length of the core to provide shoul ders 15 and 15 opper and asbestos gaskets encircle the core 11 and in the assemblage of the core 11 with the shell 10 the gasket 16 will be interposed between the shoulder 15, formed on the enlarged portion 15 and shoulder 10 provided by the varied bores in the shell. The bore 17 in the shell 10 is screw threaded to accommodate a threaded bushing 18. Interposed between the upper end of the bushing 18 and the shoulders 15 is a copper and asbestos gasket 19. The gaskets 16 and 19 serve to provide tight joints to thwart the tendency of the hot gases to find their Way between the parts thereby eliminating cracking of the porcelain coreand enabling it to stand a high degree of heat. The bushing 18 is of such length that a portion thereof protrudes from the shell, said portion being provided with a plurality of flat faces to accommodate a wrench or the like to facilitate its removal or its being fitted'to the shell 10. The lower end of the electrode 12 extends below the lower end of the core 11 and has arranged thereon for reciprocating action and turning action as well, a cleaning element 20, comprising a porcelain member 21 having a ore 22 slightly larger in diameter than the diameter of the electrode 12 so that the member 21 may freely reciprocate or rotate as An annular metallic memupon the enlargedportion 21 and is provided with a points 24:, adapted to lie in juxtaposition to a ferrule or nut 25 at the extreme end of the electrode 12 which limits the downward movement of the cleaning element 20. The enlarged portion 21 is adapted to engage the apron 14 to limit the up ward movement of the cleaning element 20. The range of movements of the cleaning eleto give it an impetus which will remove any carbon that may accumulative on the end of the electrode 12 her 23 is arranged 21 of the member plurality of spark and will loosen and shake off any carbon that may accumulate about the spark points 24.
From the construction and arrangement of parts constituting the plug it will be manifest that the accumulation of carbon or soot will be reduced to minimum and that the possibility of spark interruption is practically entirely eliminated.
What is claimed as new is 1. In a spark plug, a plurality of electrodes, a cleaning element arranged for re ciprocatory movement on one of said electrodes, spark points carried by said cleaning element intervening the electrodes to provide a plurality. of spark gaps between said electrodes.
2. In a spark plug, a plurality of electrodes, a movable non conducting cleaning "element arranged on one of said electrodes of spark points carried by the cleaning element, the spark points intervening the electrodes to providea spark gap between the ground electrode.

A spark plug comprising a shell embodying a non-conducting core and a bush-v ing, said bushing constituting" an annular I ground electrode, a central electrode carried by said core, a carbon cleaning element arranged for reciprocation on thecentral electrode, radially disposed spark points carried by saidcleaning element and intervening bath of said electrodes and a conducting ferrule on the central electrode to limit .the downward movement of the cleaning element.
