Be it known that'I Jo N MQSCINI, L citizen of the United states, and resident of New York, in the county ofNew, York and State ofjNewQYork, have inventedcertain Leaf-Applying Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a'device for re-y ceiving metalleaf from a backing strip and depositing it-onto book covers or other surfaces to bGOInZLIIlGIltQd, and has for itsobject to' provide a depositing roll for this purpose carryingmeans "for supplying the metal strip-to said roll, the arrangementof the mechanism being such, that the strip supplying 'andapplying meansmay be readily removed from proximity to the roll for the purpose of permitting the roll-to be heated without injuring these adjacent parts and as readily returnto-operative position.

I I have also provided a guideeye 30 through which the strip ofmetal leaf and its backing stripmay also be led if desired on its way from the package roll to the edge tion of asmall amount of olive oil, or other suitable greasy substance, to the operating surface or edge of the heated depositing or fillet roll causes the metal leaf to adhere to its surface as it comes in contact therewith and serves to facilitate the depositing of the leaf onto the surface to be ornamented. order to apply this oil to the roll I have pro- I vided a roll or pad 31 which is mounted on the arm 32 pivoted at 33 to swing on the arm 26, and this lubricating roll is flexibly held iucontact with the surface of the fillet roll by means of the spring34, a stop pin 38 serving to limit its forward movement.

In practice it is necessary inorder to render effective the operation of the fillet or depositing roll, to heat the same to a, mod
erate temperature by placing the roll over a gas flame, and in order to do this it is:
found necessary to remove all of the supplying parts, such as: the paekageroll the guides'and the 011 roll, i' rom proximity iththe fillet roll. To do this in a simple and effective Way I simply swing the lirame on its hinge from the upright or operative position, illustrated in full lines, back to the inoperative position, illustrated in dotted lines, thereby leaving tl'iefillet roll free and clear to be applied to the heating fiame Without danger oi injuring the other operating parts.
By placing the tension-retaining spring 35, as shown, it serves a double purpose; first, to hold the mechanism in operative position with the guide wvheel and the oil Wheel in contact with thefillet Wheel, and second, italso' serves to retain the frame in the inoperative position back against the] the depositing rolls in each establishment 'With a strip supplying frame.
