Be it known. that I, DAViD AooIsoN EN- *KINS, awcitizen ofrthe-United states, and {a resident of .Kokomo, county of :Howardjan'd State of Indiana, haveinventecL-a certainnew; and useful Removable -Top for Pitche ers and the like; and I do :hereby declare that-the following is dull, elear,-and exact description: thereof, 'rreference} belng had to the accompanying drawings, -in wh-ieli This invention [relates to l quid containers; such as; pitchers and 2 the like, and prigmarily ;;to that class used in dispensing syrupsand:othergliquids, wherein the pitcher wis provitled with; aEhingedcover.
The chief; feature: of the. invention isv the provision of :meansbfor' securing the cover to;the;pi tcher sothatthe cover may be readily attached or detachedfor cleansing-and re-filling purposes. j p
A further feature of thezinvention isrthe .positive locking and rigid-construction of the cover. connectlon betweenxthe cover and pitcher. I 7
The full nature. of the invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claim.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a pitcher embodylng the 1nvention. Flg. 2 1s a frontelevational view,
of the invention. Fig. 3 is an enlarged elevational view .of adetail of the invention.
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal cross'sectional view taken on line 1-4 of 'Fig.- 3. Fig, 5 is a transverse sectional View taken on line 5 -5 of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 isa side elevational view of a modified form ofpitcher and cap, parts' being broken. away to show some of, the parts in detail. Fig. 7 is alsimilar- ,vlew
. showing the detachable connection in another position.
In the drawings 10 indicates :a syrup pitcher or the like provided with the usual pouring spout 11, a'handle'12, and a mouth portion 13. Said mouth portion "13. and spout 11 are suitably closed 'bythe'usual cover, such as aplate 14, shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Integral with said plate and extending rearwardl I and upwardly therefrom is the usual nger piece 15.
Means for securing the cover plate 14; to the pitcher proper comprises a supporting hinge member or plate 16 detachably se- Y with :the handle.

depending and rearwardly projecting ears 19 formed integralwithztheifingerpiece 15,
as shownin'Figs. 1 and .2. .Asuitablehinge pin "2O secures theears in operative position, and-asuitable coiled spring 21 supplies tensionit'o said hinge, so that--thecover14 will bereturned to and maintained upon the 2 mouth of .the pitcher.
Means for detachably securing the sup- 5 a'projecting boss 22,: the same being elontends vertically andsubstantially .in line ingjside POItlQI1S-.2l,---Sfli(l portions yieldingly engaging the wedge-shaped projections 23 of the elongated projecting boss 22. It will be noted that the supporting plate may beslipped upon the projecting boss, as shown, and is thus detachably secured to the pitcher. I V
The means 'for locking the supporting plate 16 upon the-pitcher comprises a cirporting plate16 to thejpitcher 10; comprises The proj ection 22, as
1 shown clearlyin Fig 5, has sidewardlyprojecting portions23 forming a-wedge. The plate 16 isproVided-With inwardly projecb' cular projecting boss 25 formed upon and integral with the elongated boss 24:, and
preferably near the upper portion thereof.
The plate 16 is provided with a longitudi- I nally extending slot 26 substantially parallel tothe elongated projecting boss 22, and said slot terminates in a circular portion 27, the same being adapted to receive thecircular boss 25." When the supporting plate 16is slid longitudinally of'said elongated boss, the slot 26 encounters the circular projection 25 and the slotted ends of said plate are separated to permit the circularprojection to become seated in the cir-- cular slotted portion 27. \Vhen thus seat-, ed, the slotted ends of the plate 16' grip the elongated boss which forms a yielding engagement, and said circular slot and circularboss positively lock the plate 16 to the pitcher. I g
In Fig. 6a modified form of pitcher and cover connection is shown. The pitcher 100 is provided with the usual pouringspout 111, handle 112, pouring mouth 113, cap 114 and finger piece 115, as shown. In this instance the mouth 113 of the pitcher is pro vided with a channel 113 which is adapted to catch and receive any drippings or the like from the spout 111 and return the same to the interior of the pitcher in the usual manner. The cap also is provided with an engaging flange 11 1 which is adapted to be seated upon and engage the upper edge of the mouth 113. Thesupporting plate 116*is substantially similar to the. plate '16 shown in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive, having the longitudinal slot, circular slotted portion and inwardly turned edges. Said plate 116 has a portion 117 turned back upon the plate 116, as shown in Fig. (5, said hinge iorining portion 117 being provided with hinge forming ears 118. Ad acent said ears 1.18 are similar ears 119, the same being formed upon a hinge form ng strip 123, said hinge forming strip being suitably secured to the finger piece 115, as by means of the inwardly turned flange portions 124. The
quired by the construction of the pitcher.
While the invention has been described in great detail, it will be understood that the broader features thereof, particularly the detachable connection and the means for positively locking, the connection, are
not to be limited by the details of the description.
The invention claimed is: A pitcher including a cover, an elongated boss positioned upon the pitcher, sa d boss being substantially wedge-shaped in cross section, an elongated hinge supporting plate, including a body portion and having inwardly turned side edges, each adapted to engage the'wedge-shaped side of said elongated boss, said platebeing slidable longitudinally upon said elongated boss, hinge means supported near-one end of said plate for pivotally supporting said cover, the
being slottedlongitudinally intermediate the side edges, said longitudinal slot terminating intermediate the ends of saidplate body portion in an enlarged opening, and a body portion ofsaid plateat the other end i boss projecting outwardly i from said; elonl gated boss and. intermediate the sides thereof, said boss being complementarily formed so as to be sea'tablein said'enlarged opening-to yieldingly lock s'aidplateto said In witness where i, li have hereuiito affixed mysignature, 3
