To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES E. BALDWIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Houston, in the county of Harris and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Penholders, of which the following is a specification;

This invention relates to improvements in pen holders having novel means for de.-: tachably engaging a pen point.

An important object of this invention is to provide a pen holder having novel means for releasing a pen point without the necessity of gripping the same with the fingers and consequent soiling thereof.

A further object of the invention is to provide a pen point retaining device adapted to securely support the pen point in frictional contact with one side wall of the pen holder so as to prevent rusting and consequent sticking between the pen point and the retaining device for the same.

A further object of the invention is to provide a pen holder of the class described which is of highly simplified construction, desirable in use and cheap to manufacture.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will be a parent duringthe course of the following description.

In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same.

In the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 generally designates a pen holder which in this case is ofwood althoughitis obvious that the same may be constructed of any desired material. The forward portion of the holder or handle is provided with a longitudinally extending bore or' opening 6 in which is arranged a pen retaining and releasing device generally designated by the numeral 7. bent to provide a U-shaped' anchoring member 8 which as illustrated in the several ures includes a pair of arms 9 one of which is provided with an anchoring prong 10. The U-shaped locking member8 is snugly arranged in the rear portion of the opening 6 and is firmly held in position by the tendency of its arms 9 to swing outwardly and engage theinner sides of the opening 6. The intermediate portion of the pen retaining member 7 is bowed or curved longitudinally as indicated at 11 and is adapted to urge the pen engaging portion 12 away from the adjacent side wall of the opening 6. ,As illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3, the pen engaging portion 12 is widened and is curved transversely to conform to the transverse curvature of a pen 13.

The forward end portion of the pen support is extended beyond the forward end of the holder and is provided with a transverse slot 14 through which is extended the rear end portion 15 of a spring arm 16. The spring arm 16 is curved or bowed longitudinally and in the position illustrated in Fig? l,,traverses the bore 6 and is engaged with the opposite side of the holder through the medium of a head 17. The forward end portion 18 ofthe head 17 extends slightly beyond the outer side-wall of the opening 6 to permit bringing the inner side of said forward end portion 18 in contact with the thumb nail, or with the edge of a desk or table whereby the spring arm 16 may be readily released.

When in operative position as illustrated in Fig. 1, the releasing arm 16 is securely held in position by the head 17 which is arranged inwardly of the pivot point of the arm and is prevented from accidental movement by the contact of the bowed portion with the inner side of the opening 6.

In the practice of the invention, the memher. 7 is arranged in parallel relation to the longitudinal axis of the bore 6 by engaging the'head .of the spring arm 16 with the forward end of'the holder. When the spring arm 16 is arranged transversely of the bore 6 and is secured in the position illustrated in Fig. l, the pen engaging portion 12 is pressed into firm engagement with the adj acent side of the opening 6. The pen point is now inserted between the pen enga ing portion 12 and the adjacent side wall 0 the opening 6. As the penengaging portion 12 is elongated and is curved transversely, the same firmly engages the pen point and securely retains the same in position during use. When the penbecomes worn, the spring arm 16 is released by moving the same outwardly on its pivot whereupon the spring portion 11 causes the pen contact member 12 to swing away from the adjacent side wall of the opening. As the pen support 12 moves away from the side wall of the opening, the pen is permitted to drop from the opening 6 andis thereby removed Without the necessity of gripping the same and consequently soiling the fingers. As the handle 5 is preferably of wood, rusting between the inner side wall of the bore 6 and the outer side of the pen is prevented. In the event that there is any rusting between the pen engaging portion 12 and the inner side of the pen, the pen may be readily removed by simply knocking the same from the member 12.

It is to be understood that the form of the invention herewith shown and described is to be taken, as a preferred embodiment of the same and that such minor changes may be made as will remain within the spirit of the invention and the scope of what is claimed.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

1. The combination with a pen holder having alongitudinally extending bore, of a pen retaining member constructed of a length of spring metal. having one end portion anchored within said opening and its opposite end portion provided with a pen engaging member, and a locking arm pii oted to the forward end portion of said pen retaining member.

2. The combination with a pen holder having a longitudinally extending bore, of a pen retaining member constructed from a length of spring metal having its rear end portion bent in U-shaped formation and anchored in the rear end portion of said bore, the forward end portion of said pen retaining member being provided with a pen engaging portion, the intermediate portion of said pen engaging member being bowed, and a locking arm connected to the forward end of said pen retaining member.

The combination with a pen having an opening in its forward end portion, of a length of spring metal arranged within said opening and having its rear end portion bent in U-shaped formation and in firm con tact with the inner side wall of said opening, the forward end portion of said length of metal being curved transversely for providing a pen engaging member, the interme diate portion of said length of metal being curved longitudinally for forming a spring, and a locking arm pivoted to the forward end of said length of metal.

A pen retaining attachment for pen holders including a length of metal having its rear end portion bent to form an anchoring device, the forward end portion of said length of metal being curved transversely for forming a pen engaging member, the intermediate portion of said length of metal being curved longitudinally for providing a spring adapted to retain said pen engaging member in firm contact with a pen, and a locking arm of spring metal pivoted to said length of metal forwardly of said pen engaging member.

5; The combination with a pen holder having a longitudinally extending bore, of a length of spring metal arranged within said bore and having its rear end portion in firm contact with the side walls of the opening of the bore, the forward portion of said length of metal being widened and curved transversely for forming a pen engaging member, and a locking arm pivoted .to the forward end of said length of metal and having its forward end provided with a head adapted to engage the forward ends of said holder whereby said pen engaging member is held in rigid contact with a pen.

6. The combination with a pen having a longitudinally extending bore, of a pen engaging member arranged within said bore, a locking arm pivoted to the forward end portion of said pen engaging member and having its forward end portion bent to provide a head, said pen engaging member and the head of said locking arm being adapted 100 to contact with opposite sides of the pen holder, said locking arm being curved longitudinally.

having a longitudinal bore, of a length of spring metal anchored at its rear end portion within said bore, the forward portion of said length of metal being adapted to engage the inner side of a pen, the outer side of the pen being adapted to engage the side wall of said bore, and a locking arm of spring metal pivoted to the forward portion of said length of metal and traversing the bore of said pen holder, the free end of said arm being provided with locking means.

8. The combination with a pen holder having a longitudinal bore, of a pen retaining member anchored within said bore and having means for engaging a pen, and a locking arm connected to the forward end of said pen retaining member and traversing said bore, the forward portion of said locking arm being engaged with the forward end of the pen holder and extended laterall-ybeyond the same for forming a releasing device.

9. The combination with a pen holder having a bore, of a pen retaining member arranged within said bore and extending beyond the same, and a locking arm of spring metal traversing said bore and pivoted to the extended end portion of said en retaining member, said locking arm being provided with a bowed portion in contact with the wall of said bore, the forward end portion of said arm being engaged with the forward end of said holder and extended laterally beyond the same.
