To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. RATEKIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakes, in the county of Dickey and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grates, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawm s.
lhis invention relates to an improved grate for cook stoves and the like, andan object of the invention is to provide a $1111- ple, efficient and practical device of this general character, capable of being manufactured in connection with stoves for a relatively low cost, whereby the stove can be sold at a reasonable profit.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this kind having means for effecting the distribution of air within the the bed, in a manner to create a more perfect combustion of the coal.
A further object of the invention is the provision of air feeding means, whereby the grate is particularly adapted for use in connection with lignite or similar fuel.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a grate including a plurality of grate bars disposed above and offset from each other in overlapping positions for retaining the fire bed and a certain amount of the ashes and yet permitting a proper circulation of air between the bars in order to also effect a more perfect combustion of the fuel.
An additional object of the invention consists in the provision of a centrally disposed air circulating means, in the form of a tubular arch, in combination with a water jacket over the central part of the air circulating arch or pipe, in order to provide a cooling system and water plant for the stove, in order to increase the capacity of steam boilers.
While the design and construction at present illustrated and set forth is deemed preferable, itjis obvious that as a result of a reduction of the invention to a more practical form for commercial purposes, the invention may be susceptible to changes, and the right to these changes is claimed, provided they are comprehended within the scope of what is claimed.

A grate 3 is supported between the walls of the stove by means of the projections 4t and 5. The projections il extend outumrdly be yond the stove and are connected by a cross piece 6 having a handle 7 whereby the grate may be longitudinally reciprocatedin order to shake the fire bed.
The grate 3 comprises a frame 8, the end pieces of which are connected by the bars 9. The bars 9 are arranged in graduated positions from a point just below the wall of the fire not downwardly toward the center thereof. The bars 9 are spaced in superimposed positions and offset from each other, and are also overlapped so as to effectively support the fire bed, and a portion of the ashes, yet the ashes may pass between the bars, when the grate is shaken, and furthermore, the proper circulation of air is permitted between the bars, in order to effect a more perfect combustion of the fuel.
ising upwardly from the lowermost grate bars and attached thereto is a tubular arch construction 10, the downwardly extending ends of which communicate through the lowermost bars, as shown, in order to provide a communication with the ash pit. By the provision of this construction and the perforations 11 in the wall of the tubular arch and the end extension legs, a proper circulation of air is assured, in order to assure a more perfect combustion of the fuel.
A water jacket 12 is provided. This water jacket hasan intake pipe 13 connected to it at one end, and an outlet pipe 14 at its other end. The water jacket is hollow, as shown, in order to permit a circulation of water therethrough, and furthermore, the wall of the water jacket has a semi-circular curvature as indicated at 13 to conform to the wall of the tubular air circulating arch. This water jacket constitutes a cooling system and a hot water plant for the stove, increasing the capacity of steam boilers, as well as assisting in affording a more perfect combustion of the fuel. The water jacket, as shown, is made separate from the tubular arch, owing to the fact that the arch moves longitiulinally with the grate, and because the jacket is rigid with the inlet and outlet pipes. However, as the grate is shaken, the tubular arch will slide longitudinally adjacent the semi circular groove and cut away portion of the wall of the jacket. In Figs. and 5 a modified form of grate is disclosed. In this construction the wall 15 of the fire pot has downardly and inwardly inclined ports or openings 16, similar to those previously set forth, and are in communication with the atmosphere and capable of delivering air within the lire pot. The lower portion of the wall 15 terminates in a supporting shoulder 11' for the grate 18, which comprises a plurality of ring bars 15) spaced in super-imposed positions and overlapped. These ring bars are graduated in diameters from the uppermost ring to the central loweri'nost circular plate 24). The ring bars 19 are rigidly con nected by the inclined bars 21, the lower ends of which having lugs forming sl'ioulders 22, for the support of the circular plate 20. The uppermost ring bar has bolted thereto as at 23 an arm 24-, which protrudes through an opening 25 in the wall 15 of the fire pot. This arm 24 is adapted to be engaged by the hand of the operator when it is desired to impart movement to the grate, for the purpose of shaking the same. lVheir the grate is moved concentrically with the fire pot,the coals of the fire bed are agitated, and the ashes are allowed to fall to the bottom, and gradually pass between the circular ring bars of the grate and discharge into the pit (not shown).
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a grate comprising a plurality of grate bars spaced in super-imposed positions, overlapping and relatively graduated in horizontal directions for supporting the fire bed and at the same time permitting the ashes to pass between them, a tubular arch carried by the lowermost bars and provided with openings to permit a circulation of air into the interior of the fire bed.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a grate comprising a plurality of grate bars spaced in super-imposed positions, overlap ping and relatively graduated in horizontal directions for supporting the fire bed and at the same time permitting the ashes to pass between them, a tubular arch carried by the lowermost bars and provided with openings to permit a circulation of air into the interior of the fire bed, and a water cooling system conforming to and cooperating with the arch, and at the same time constituting a hot water plant. 7
In a new article of manufacture, the combination with a fire pot having inwardly and downwardly disposed openings in communication with the atmosphere and delivering within the fire pot, of-
grate below the wall of the fire pot comprising superimposed spaced grate elements, overlapping each other and differently spaced horizontally, for supporting the fire bed, and permitting a discharge of the ashes, and at the same time allowing a circulation of air through the fire bed, and an air feeding tubular arch member rising upwardly from the lower grate element and communicating through the lower grate element with the ash pit, said air feeding member having its wall and its end parts provided with openings, to effect a. circulation of air in the fire box, and to insure a more perfect conibi'istion of the fuel.
l. In a new article of manufacture, the combination with a fire pot, having inwardly and downwardly disposed openings in com munication with the atmosphere and delivering within the fire pot, of a grate below the wall of thejfire pot comprising super-imposed spaced grate elements, overlapping each other and differently spaced horizontally, for supporting the fire bed, and permitting a discharge of the ashes, and at the same time allowing a circulation of air through the fire bed, and an air feeding tubular arch member rising upwardly from the lower grate element and communicating through the lower grate element with the ash pit, said air feeding member having its wall'and its end parts provided with openings, to effect a circulation of air in the fire box. and to insure a more perfect combustion of the fuel, and a water jacket conforming to the arch of the air feeding tubular member, and constituting a cooling system and hot water plant, said water jacket being stationary, whereas the air feeding tubular member is movable with the grate.
