JOHN RUST, OF KALAMAZOO, IVIICHIGTAN.`
ADJUSTABLE BED.
To all '107mm t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN RUST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kalamazoo, county of Kalamazoo, State of Michigan, have invented certain new andiiseful Improvements in Adjustable Beds, ofV which the following is a specieation.
rI`his invention relates to improvements in adjustable beds. My present improvements relate more particularly to the typeof adjustable bed shown in Letters Patent, No. 1,265,253, issued May 7, 1.918, the same being an adaptation and improvement upon the structure there illustrated.
The main object of this invention is to provide an improved adjustable bed which is easily adjusted to accommodate the needs ofl the particular occupant.
VFurther objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely .appear from the detailed description to follow'.
I accomplish the objects of. my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
Astructure which is a preferred embodimentrof my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying"drawing forming a partof this specification, iny which:
Figure I is a plan view of the bed einbodying the features of my invention, portions of the bed spring-being omitted.
Fig. II is asideelevation with the bed r bottom adjusted to horizontal position as shown in Fig. I
Fig. III is a side elevation yshowing the adjustment of the bed as a chair with the foot section in alinement with the seat section.
Fig. IV is a side elevation `showing another adjustment ofthe bed as a chair1 Fig. V a detail longitudinal section showing the bedtilted, the head of the be being elevated. 1
Fig. VIis a detail transverse sectionon a line corresponding to line (5--6 of Figs. I
and II, showing details ofthe operating means. o o j f Fig. VII is a detail vertical section on a line corresponding to line 7-7 of Fig. III, showing special features of the rests or supports.
Fig. VIII is an'enlarged sectionof the locking mechanism, partially in section.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J 1111922,
Application filed July 25, 1919. SerialNo. 313,311.
In the drawing similar reference characters refer 'tosimilar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section linesf` Referring to the 4drawing,the bed frame ofthe structure illustrated comprises head and foot members 1 and 2, respectively, and side rails 3. The bed bottom comprisesthe head section 4, seat section 5 and foot section 6. These bottom sectionsar'e formedof side'. pieces connected by suitable cross pieces.: The sections are pivotally connected at 7. The spring bottom 8 is continiious, Vonly a portion, however,- being illustrated.
y Each side rail is provided With aV hanger 9 for the actuating shaft 10 whichY projects at one side to receive `the crank 11. The head' section is pivoted at Il, the-pivot in kthe structuref-illustrated being engaged: with y justment to and'fr'om engaging position and being held in its engaging orlockinf.' posi- `tion by the catch 17 which engaV veswwiththe pin 18l on one of the hangers. h'ese'parts describediare in general the sameas in my patent" referredJ to. l
The footl section is lprovided with down- 4wardly projecting arms 19 carrying ins'2() and having clamping -nuts 21 t ereon. These arms are connectedto the segments by the links 22 which have'slots 23 thereinv engaging these pins,'the links being ivoted at 2li to thel segments. ByU the adjusting of these nuts the links'may be clampedt'o'the armsl or allowed to slide' thereon. When clampedto'the arms, the headand foot-,sectionsare simultaneously adjusted.` When the nuts are released a lost motion connection' is provided so that the'adjustment of the head section may be accomplished, as illustrated/in F ig. III, without corresponding adjustment of the foot section. The links'25 are pivoted at 26 to the seat section and'slott'e'dat 27 to en'gag`e`the pins 20. This slotted or lst" motion conictionpermitslthe adjustment ofthe footlsection, but limits the upward movement of the foot section relative to the seat secti'o`n so that Cil after these parts are brought into alinement a continued upward movement will tilt the bed bottom as a whole.
By securing` both the links 22 and 25 by means of the clamping nuts additional adjustments of the sections relative to cach other are provided so that Vthe bed may be adjusted te a number of positions accommodating the needs or desires of the user.
To support either or both of the seat and foot sections, I provide the rests 28 which are pivotally mounted on the hangers 28 on the side rails 2, clamping nuts 29 i being provided for securing the rests in their operative and inoperative positions as may be desired, the nuts clamping the rests against the pins 3G, the rests being notched to receive the pin as shown in Fig. VII.
lith the parts thus arranged, the bed bottom may be tilted as a whole, either by raising or lowering the head, and may be adjusted to bring the head, seat and foot portions in different relative positions as may suit the needs of the particular 0ccup'ant.
My improved bed is easily manipulated and adjusted, and securely retained in its adjusted positions.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim'as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. In an. adjustable bed, the combination of a supporting frame, a bed bottom comprising pivotally connected head, seat and foot sections, segments on which said head section is mounted pivotally mounted en said frame, an actuating shaft provided with pinions meshing with said segments, depending arms on said foot section, slotted links connected to said segments, links connected to said seat section, pins on said arms engaging the slots of said links, said pins being provided with clamping nuts whereby said links may be clamped to said arms or permitted to slide thereon, and rests for said vseat and foot sections adjustably mounted on said frame to support said sections or permit the adjustment thereof.
