The mounting for the mandrel includes strips or plates 9 riveted or otherwise secured to the inner surfaces ol the side and end plates 2 and 3, each of said plates 9 being provided with an inwardly projecting lug 10, and two pairs of guide and supporting bars 11 having their outer ends seated within notches or seats 12 in the lugs 10 and secured thereto by means of rivets 13 extending through said lugs. ln order to support and guide the bars 11, a supporting block le is provided at the center ot the mandrel, one side of saidblock being provided withvgrooves or channels 15 extending across the face thereof for receiving the overlapping portions of the bars 11, one groove 15 being deeper than the other, as shown in Fig. 2, in order that the bars 11 can cross within the block, it being noted that the bars 11 are in different planes. The bars fit snugly in the grooves or channels .15, thus preventing transverse displacement of said bars, although permitting longitudinal sliding movement thereof. A plate 1G is secured to said side ot the block 141 over the grooves 15 by means oi screws 17 or the like, thereby retaining the bars 11 within the grooves with a snug lit, yet permitting longitudinal sliding movement of said bars.
This plate 1G is carried by a yoke 1S that has a portion 19 Ator attachment to a supporting standard or the like. The yoke 18 thus supports the plate 16 and block' 14, which in turn support the bars 11 and other parts that extend from the block 14 to the mandrel proper. A i
Asy a means for facilitating the adjustnient oit the mandrel ,and for clamping or holding the parts in position after adjustment is made, that side of the block 14C opposite to the grooves 1.5 has a boss 2O provided with stud 21 into which a clamping screw 22 is threaded. Two pairs of crossed levers 23 are mounted on the stud 21, cach lever having an opening 24 between its ends to receive the stud 21, and toggle linksj25 are pivoted to the levers 23 by means of rivets or the like, and converge to and engage the rivets 13 at those sides of the lugs 10 opposite to the bars 11, as seen in Fig. 2. The levers 23 that are connected-to the side plates 2 are of shorter length than the levers 23 that are connected to the end-plates 3, in proportion to the distances between said plates, and it will be understood that between each pair'of plates 2 and 3, there is a pair of crossed toggled levers 23 having their ends connected by links 25 with the respective plates.
To adiust the mandrel, the screw-22 is loosened, which may be readily turned by the thumb and fingers, and this loosens the levers E23. Then, the end plates 3 can be moved toward and away ifrom one another to adjust the mandrel to the length desired, within the limits oif the adjustment permitted, and likewise the side plates 2A can be tino'ved toward and away from one another to adjust the mandrel to the desired width. .lt will be noted that the toggle mechanism constrains. the plates of each pair to move equal distances from the renter of the mand rel, whereby the mandrel in all adj iistmeiits is disposed concentric with the supporting means. Furthermore, the side and end plates can be adjusted independently-without interference'or destroying the adjustment of either. Thus, when thesideplates 2 are adjusted, the bar's'll and toggle thereof will move, and the plates 3 and their bars 11 and toggle remain stationary, whereas when the plates 3 are adjusted, the plates'2 will remain .stationary with theirbars 11. Thus, the bars 11 of each pairv of plates prevent said plates frommoving endwise when adjustments are being made, whilethe toggle mechanism constrains fthe platesof each pair to move the saine distance from the center. 4'l`i ig 1,'ether, theha-rs 11 and to'gglevdevices support the mandrel from the interior thereof iii a firm yand substantial manner and when the screw `22 is tightened after adjustments have Abeen made, the levers 23 will be clamped on the stud 21, thereby preventing further movement of the parts of the mandrel, and holdingthem in their adjusted position.y l v Having thus Vdescribed the invention, what 'is claimed as new is i i 1; A mandrel having opposite adjustable portions movable toward and away from one another, a supporting member located centrally within the mandrel, anda toggle device including a pair' of crossed levers pivotally connected at their point oticrossing to said member, and links connectin(r said levers and portions, so as to constrain said portions for simultaneous movement to-` ward and away from said member;

5. A mandrel having side and end plates, corner pieces slidably engaging them, a central block having crossed channels and a stud, pairs of overlapping bars secured to said plates and fitting slidably in said channels, pairs of crossed toggle levers mounted on said stud, toggle links connected to said levers and the respective side and end plates, and clamping means carried by said stud for clamping said levers thereon.
