IMPROVEMENT IN METALLIC CARTRIDGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 134,368, dated December 31, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DEWITT G. FARRING- TON, of Lowell, in the county of Middlesex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in the Lubrication of the Bullet or Projectile of a Cartridge for Breech-Loading Fire-Arms and Ordnance, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to more as bricating the barrel than by the means heretofore used, and the protection of both lubricant and cartridge from water and climatic influences, and is described as follows, viz:
The bullet is inserted into the shell of the cartridge over the powder, as shown in Fig ure 1, the bullet being even with the open end of the shell, or so far withdrawn or protruded therefrom as to retain between the shell and itself a suflicient quantity of the lubricant and material for waterproofing the cartridge and ectually luand retained in its place by having a portion of the shell turned or closed over the same, or formed so as to retain the lubricant or any water-proofing material I may use in combination with the same, either or both.
