R. VON FROMMER.
FIREARM.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 7. 1915.

RUDOLF VON FROMMER, 0F BUDAPEST, AUSTRIA-HUNGARY.
FIREARM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 23, 1915.
Application filed May 7, 1915. Serial No. 26,639.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUDoLF VON FROMMER,
a citizen of Hungary, residing at Soroksari ut 158, Budapest, IX, Austria-Hungary, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Firearms, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its object to provide an improved firearm having a bolt head capable of rotating or moving in the breech bolt, and a loading recess which interrupts the guide grooves for the breech bolt.
Firearms wherein the bolt head is capable of rotating or moving in the breech bolt, have the drawback that at the place where the guide for the breech bolt in the breech casing is interrupted by the loading recess, the bolt head is easily liable to jam while being opened and closed. This jamming is caused because the bolt head in passing the said interrupted portion of its guide, is liable through various causes to rotate out of register with the breech bolt, and thereby change its position relatively to the breech bolt guide. Consequently, on being moved farther along into its guide, the bolt head strikes against the guide or jams in the guide. This drawback is particularly noticeable in firearms which have been for some length of time in use, and wherein the connection between the bolt head and the breech bolt has become somewhat loose through wear and tear. On the other hand, the interruption of the guide grooves for the breech bolt by a loading recess is very important, because such a recess allows a much more easy and convenient loading of the firearm, since the cartridges can be pushed much more easily into the cartridge chamber.
In order to obviate the above stated drawback, there is provided according to my invention in or below the groove in the breech casing for guiding the breech bolt, an additional guiding means in the breech casing as Well as on the bolt head or on the latters nib, and so arranged that it will guide the bolt head past the place of the breech bolt guide groove where the latter is interrupted by the loading recess.
By way of example my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein- Figure 1 is a cross section of the guide for the breech bolt in the breech casing, and of the bolt head along line II of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 isa longitudinal section of the guide without the breech bolt and bolt head. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the bolt head and a portion of the breech bolt, and Fig. 4 is a similar View as Fig. 2 showing the breech bolt and bolt head.
1 is the breech casing in which for the purpose of guiding the bolt head 2 and breech bolt 6 the usual guide gIOOXB 3 is provided which is interrupted by the loading recess 4. In such an arrangement the nib 5 of the bolt head 2 loses at this point the guidance otherwise afforded by the guide groove 3, so that the bolt head is liable to rotate out of register to some extent relatively to the breech bolt 6 or its guiding fillet 7, thus hindering the smooth forward and backward movements of the bolt head in the groove 3. To prevent such an occurrence, I provide, in the guide groove 3 for the bolt head, a guiding rib 8 adapted to cooperate with a guide gIOOXB 9 in the said nib 5 in such a manner that the bolt head will be securely guided at the place where the guide groove for the breech bolt is interrupted by the loading recess. The same result of course is produced if the guiding rib 8 is arranged on the guide nib 5, and the guide groove 9 is formed in the groove 3; that is to say, the position of the rib and corresponding groove may be reversed, without changing the nature of the invention.
Claim:
In a breech-loading fire-arm of the type described, the combination of the breech casing having a guiding groove for the bolt head interrupted at one place by a loading recess, the breech bolt, the bolt head capable of rotating therein and provided with guiding means, and separate guiding means at the place of said loading recess adapted to cooperate with the guiding means provided on the said bolt head.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of twowitnesses.
RUDOLF VON FROMlMER.
