IMPROVEMENT IN ENDI-GATES FOR WAGONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. IlSd, dated December 31, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JESSE D. CAREY, of Monica, in the county of Peoria and State of Illinois, have invented an Improvement in End-Gates for NVagons, particularly adapted for those employed to transport and discharge grain; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this speciiication, in
' which like letters of reference refer to like where the gate is held between the heads of a,
spring-catch on either of said side-boards. Said catches are simultaneously pushed outward to release the gate by means of two sliding bars pivoted to either arni of a lever, which turns upon a pin or bolt on the rear of the gate.
In the drawing, A represents the side-boards united at their upper rear corners, in the center of their seinicircular ears a a, by the bracerod b. Low down on the nether edge of each side-board, on its exterior face, is Xed a horizontal catch, t' t', the shoulder ot which projects 'ar enough to the rear to include the outer edge of the gate C. B, the Wagon-bottom, the rear upper corner being well rounded down so as notto impede the closing of the gate;-
C, the gate, strengthened by braces on its interior side, and pivoted upon and suspended by its upper edge from the brace-rod b, which passes through the ears a a of the side-boards. A notch or recess is cut in each upper corner to receive either ear a a of the side-boards, and so shaped as to t the arc ot' the ears a a at any point to which the gate is opened, and allow it to shut vertically against the end of the wagon. In the center of the lower part ot the exterior of the gate is pivoted a han d-lever, D, the longest arm or handle being confined within a slot or staple, d, and on each side ot its pivot is also pivoted the end of a rod or bar, c c, one bar above and one below the lever-pivot, their remoter ends being confined in a slot or staple, k k, opposite the respective catches i i, the end of each bar e e resting against one of the said catches when the gate is closed. The edges of the gate upon which the catches are detained is armed with a metal plate, g g.
The operation of this gate is as follows: It is opened by pressing the handle of lever in that direction which brings both r`odsc e simultaneously against their respective adjoining catches t' z', which throws the latter both ott the edge ot' the gate at once, allowing the latter to open by the weight of the contents of the wagon, or by pulling the ring f or other handle attached to the lower part of the gate. On releasing or removing the operators hand from the handle ofthe lever D the springcatches fall forward again into their normal position, ready to again retain the gate when desired to close it.
What I claim as my invention is- 'Ihe combination ot' the wagon-box ears aa, rod b b, han gin g-gate C, staple d, pivoted lever D, attached levers c c with their staples k k, and spring-catches i i, as described.
