PATENT OFFICE...
WILLIAM H. BAILEY, OF MONONGAH, \VEST VIRGINIA.
END-GATE FA'STEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 731,739, dated June 23, 1903. Application filed December 12, 1902. Serial No. 134,987. (No model-l To all whom it may concern.-
to be a full, clear,-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. BAILEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at M nongah, in the county of Marion, State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in End-Gate Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others maybe easily skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to end-gates for dumping-cars, and more particularly to the; fastening means. therefor; and it has for its object to provide a fastening which will hold the gate securely in closed position, which and quickly operated to unlatch the gate,
In the drawings forming a portion of this I specification, and in which like numerals indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a rear end elevation of a dump-car body having an end-gate equipped with a fastening embodying the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a section on line 2 2 of Fig. 1 look-- Fig. 3 is a section on line 3 3 Secured to the sides of the car-body are the spring-stems 8 of latches, the heads 9 of which project inwardly beyond the sides of the body and the outer ends of which heads are beveled, so that the resultant faces of the 1 heads of the two latches converge in the direction of the front of the car. The lower corners of the end-gate are cut away, as shown at 10 and 11, so that the gate proper may swing free from the heads of the latches into and out of closing positions.
Pivoted upon the outer face of the endgate are latch-levers 12 and 13, which are adapted for movement of their lower ends into and out ofposition to lie behind the heads of the spring-latches, so that by shiftand which will be automatically actuated when the gate is closed.
ing these levers the end-gate may be locked or released.
To shift the latch-levers, a hand-lever 13 is pivoted upon the end-gate and is connected by means of rods'l and 15 at opposite sides of its pivot with the adjacent ends of the latch-levers, so that when said hand-lever is shifted in one direction the latch-levers will be moved into engaging position and when shifted in the opposite direction will be moved out of engaging position, the latchlevers being held yieldablyin engaging positionsby means of a helical spring 16, which is attached to the hand-lever and to the endgate. To hold the hand-lever against the action of the helical spring, said lever is provided with a knife-edge 17, which is positioned to engage the rack 18 upon the endgate. To prevent outward displacement of the lower ends of the latch-levers when disengaged from the spring-latches, keeper plates or guides 18 and 19 are secured to the face of the end-gate, and their free end portions project over the latch-levers and are offset to permit of ready pivotal movement of the levers. The upper ends of the latch-levers are offset laterally toward each other, so that when shifted outwardly they will not strike the sides of the car-body.
With this construction it will be seen that an operator standing at either side of the carbody may by manipulation of the hand-lever move the latch-levers from their engaging positions and that by engagement of the knife-edge with the rack the latch-levers will be held in such positions. Furthermore, if the hand-lever is not held in disengaging position the latch-levers will be in position to engage the beveled faces of the heads of the spring-latches and snap therehehind to hold the gate in closed position.
In practice modifications of the specific construction shown may be made and any suitable materials and proportions may be used for the various parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is- 1. The combination with the body of a vehicl'e having latches projecting inwardly beyond the sides thereof, of an end-gate pivoted in the body and having cut-away portions corresponding to the latches, latch levers the latch-levers, a hand-lever connected with pivoted to the end-gate for movement into the latch-levers for operating them, and and out of position to engage the latches, and means for holding the latch-levers normally means for moving the latch-levers into and in engaging positions. x3 5 out of engaging positions. In testimony whereof I afiix my signature 2. The combination with the body of a vein presence of two witnesses. hlcle having sprlnglatches projectlng in- WILLIAM H. BAILEY.
Wardly beyond the sides thereof, of an endgate pivot-ally mounted, latch-levers pivoted Witnesses:
