UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH KRAU'ER, OF HEATON CHAPEL, NEAR MANCHESTER, ENGLAND.
APPARATUS FOR. THE TREATMENT OF LOSS OF HAIR ON THE HEAD.
Application filed May 1,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osnrn Knaunn, a citizen of the Republic of Switzerland, residing at Heaton Chapel, near Manchester, in the county of Lancaster, England, have invented a new or Improved Apparatus for the Treatment of Loss of Hair on the Head, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements 111 apparatus for the treatment of loss of hair on the head and similar ailments and for promoting the growth of hair, and has for its object to render such apparatus more effective than hitherto has been the case.
I attain this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which- Figure 1, is a sectional side view. Fig. 2, is a plan from below and Fig. 3, is an end view of a device to be placed around the upper part of the head. Fig. 4, is a side view drawn to a reduced scale, of means for suspending the device in position.
Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts in the various figures.
Referring to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, which illustrate an example of the said invention, a is a box which is lined with asbestos, mica or the like I) and has secured inside a number of heaters 0 and an electro-magnet (Z. The electro-magnet (Z has pole pieces 6 arranged to come at the sides of the head. An asbestos or the like disk f is mounted on wires g to prevent the head from coming into contact with the heaters or electro-magnet and to deflect the heat to the sides of the head. The heaters 0 and the electro-magnet (Z may be connected in parallel or in series and fed through a plug connection it. The box a has an annular flap 2' (removed in Fig. 2) of soft material the open end of which can be drawn close to the head by means of the cord j running through a hem l: in the flap. In lieu of the cord j, a spring may be inserted in the hem 70 for the same purpose. An eye Z is fixed to the top of the box a to suspend the same from a hook m, Fig. 4:, which may be attached to an adjustable rod n, the socket piece 0 of which is fixed on a stand or to the back of a chair. The bulb of the thermometer 79 extends into the box for ascertaining the temperature therein.
Apparatuses constructed in accordance with my invention are being employed with beneficial results in the treatment of loss of Specification of Letters Patent.

hair, and by their aidhair has in some cases been grown on parts of the head which had previously been bald for several years.
The circuits may be so arranged that the heaters can be switched off without dee'nerg zing the electro-magnets or vice versa. \Vhen radiators are used, the heaters may be dispensed with, being, in cases where they are used as pole pieces also, replaced by plain pole pieces.
I am aware that it has been proposed to employ an electro-magnet with one pole forming a receptacle for the affected part, also to employ boxes at opposite sides of the body and containing means for producing electricity and heat, light and other rays. I am also aware that an electric solenoid the wires of which give off heat, has been proposed to be placed around the alfected part in the form of a garment or a hollow cylinder, that it has been proposed to form an electro-magnet with electric lamps at one pole to obtain the combined action of light and magnetism, and that a box giving oii heat and provided with a shocking coil has been suggested. I am further aware that it has been proposed to employ a number of electro-magnets, each with one pole connected to one pole of the next by magnetic ore, and also to employ two electro-magnets arranged with the pole of one opposite the unlike pole of the other for the magnetic treat ment of the body, so that the lines of force pass directly from one pole to the other through the part to be treated, and do not desire to claim any of the above described curative appliances.
I claim:
1. An apparatus for treatment of loss of hair on the head, comprising in combination, a receptacle to fit around the head, heat producing means within the receptacle and electromagnetic means within the receptacle.
2. An apparatus for treatment of loss of hair on the head, comprising in combination, a receptacle to fit around the head, electric heat producing means arranged within the receptacle and adapted to radiate heat downwardly onto the head, electric means adapted to produce a magnetic flux within the receptacle substantially at right angles to the lines of heat radiation, and closing means on the receptacle for confining the heat within the receptacle.
3. An apparatus for the treatment of loss of hair on the head, comprising in combination, a receptacle adapted to fit around the head, an electro-magnetic coil secured within the receptacle, a core in the coil, a pole piece at each end of said core in magnetic contact therewith and extending downwardly at the sides of the said receptacle,
electric heaters in the receptacle at the top thereof and means on said receptacle adapted to close the lower end thereof around the head, for thehereinbefore specified purpose.
4. An apparatus for the treatment of loss of hair on the head comprising in combination, a receptacle adapted to fit around the head, anelectro-magnetic coil, a soft iron core in said coil, a soft iron pole piece at each 'end of said core in magnetic contact therewith and extending downwardly at the sides of said box, and electric heaters secured within said box, for the hereinbefore specified purpose;
5. An apparatus for the treatment of loss of hair on the head comprising'in combination, a box adapted tofit around the head an electromagnetic coil secured within said box, a soft iron core in said coil a pole piece rigidly secured to and extending laterally from each end of the said core electric heaters in said box and means for supporting the weight of the said box in its operative position around the head, for the hereinbefore specified purpose.
6. An apparatus for treatment of loss of hair on the head comprising in combination, a receptacle adapted to fit around the head, an electro-magnetic coil secured to the inside of the receptacle at the top "thereof, a core in said coil, a pole piece secured to each end of the said core and extending downwardly at the sides of said receptacle approximately to the lower edge thereof, non-illuminating electr1c heaters secured inslde said receptacle to the top thereof and a circularly adjustable skirt depending from the bottom of the said receptacle, for the hereinbefore specified purpose.
7. An apparatus for the treatment of loss of hair on the head, comprising in combina tion, a receptacle adapted to fit around the head, an electro-magnet inside said receptacle, laterally extending pole pieces on the said electro-magnet, electric heaters inside said box, a stationary standard, a bail vertically and angularly adjustable in said standard, a hook on said bailand an eye on said box adapted to engage with said hook, for the hereinbefore specified purpose.
