YARN Tens on.
" Application filed May 18,
able, also brings about a desirable cleaning effect of the yarn itself and likewise re moves or clears it of slubs or bunches. The principle of the organization will be made apparent from the illustrative embodiment shown in the drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a vertical cross section of a portion of a spooler of conventional type;
Fig. 2 a perspective view of the tension device;
Fig. 3 an elevation of the tension device;
Fig. 4: a longitudinal through; and
Fig. 5 a cross section on line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 1 shows a new device in use on yarn passing from a bobbin 1 to the rotating spool 2, said yarn being trained first through the guide 3, then over the said tension device, then over a rod 1 and through the crevice of a common yarn clearer 5 to the spool. The rod 4 and clearer 5 are carried on one or a series of vertical shafts (3 as customary and by which they are vertically traversed to lay the yarn in a desired wind on the spool. The tension device may be carried on the same support and is so shown in Fig. 1. It consists of a circular base 7 having upstanding at one side thereof a yarn clearing jaw 8, perpendicular to the plane of the base plate, which has a circular or cylindrical boss 9. The base, jaw and boss may all be in one piece if desired and in the preferred form constitute the attachment of the device to the cross rod 10, which forms its kimmediate support. This rod is adjustable vertically, being held upon the rod 4 by one or more arms 11 which can-be secured to it at various inclinations to horizontal according to the position of the spools and the guides 3. A tension barrel 12 is fitted over the boss 9 section there- Specification of Letters Patent. P te ted J une 15, 1920.

in end contact with the upper surface of the base and is frictionally retained thereon by a set screw 13 countersunk in its outer surface which is smooth-finished. The bossreceiving bore within the barrel 12 is formed eccentrically to its own central axis and so related to the jaw 8 that by rotating it on the base its side which is proximate to said jaw may be caused to approach to or recede from it, thereby narrowingor widening the crevice between said jaw and barrel. The barrel carries a bracket 14 swiveled by screw 15 concentrically to its top end and carrying a capstan post 16 in a position which is transverse to the barrel axis, between its ends. The post is round or circular in section and smooth-finished and can be rotaftably adjusted, circumferentially about adjustment of the crevice is made to suit barrel on its eccentric mounting and is then set by tightening the screw 13. The tension imparted to the yarn is then regulated by swinging the capstan'post on its pivot 15, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 2. This adjustment it will be noted serves to vary the extent of the frictional contact between the yarn and the barrel surface and is entirely independent of the relation of the barrel to the yarn clearer jaw 8. Under the effect of the vertical traverse motion the course of the yarn over the barrel surface is caused to shift up and down or in the direction of the barrel axis which not only avoids uneven wear of the barrel but also imparts a cleaning effect upon the yarn which is another important advantage of the invention.
It will be apparent that the function and ably by the rotation of the tension barrel as described but either member can obviously be eccentric to the other or otherwise adjustable without impairing the function of the circumferentially adjustable capstan post. The latter may obviously be supported on swiveled brackets of various kinds and as above intimated the device can be supported from the spooler frame in various ways, all of said variations and modifications of my invention being intended to be included in the following claims.
Claims.
1. A yarn tension comprising a barrel and a capstan post providing a circumferential course for the yarn around a portion of the barrel surface to the post, around the latter and back over the barrel surface in the opposite direction, said post being circumferentially adjustable with reference to the barrel andmeans for traversing the yarn in the direction of the barrel axis.
2. A combined yarn clearer and tensioncomprising a base plate anda tension barrel mounted thereon, a'yarn clearer aw parallel with the barrel surface, said jaw and barrel being relatively adjustable to vary the crevice therebetween and a capstan post mounted transversely to the barrel axis and subject to adjustment with respect to said base to vary the extent of contact sur- JAMES HrBOYD.
