Description

F, HYESL Furnaces fue" Evaporanrs.
No. 134,27?. Patented`nec.24,1s72.
MARTIN P. HAYES, 0F
SEAFORTH, CANADA.
IMPRVEMENT IN FUPANACES FOR EVAPORATQRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. h?, dated December 24, 1872.
To all whom it may conceda:
Be it known that I, MARTIN PETER Havas, residing in Seaforth, in the county of Huron, Province Ontario, Canada, have invented a certain Improvement in Furnaces for Heating Liquids, of which the following is a specification:
In the annexed drawing, Figure l represente a front elevation of a furnace with my improvement attached thereto; Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section 5 and Fig. 4, a horizontal section thereof.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are designated by identical letters of reference.
This invention relates to an improved furnace for heating liquids; and it consists of the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinarter more fully described and claimed.
To enable others to make and use my invention, I Will proceed to describe it.
In the accompanying draWing,A refers to a furnace of any approved form, which is shown as having three compartments. The said furnace is furnished with the ordinary firegrate or gratesB B. C refers to a tank for holding a liquid, and which is suitably fastened to the lower side of the furnace, passing under the fire-grate. Communicating with the said tank, and located upon` the sides of the furnace A, to which they are suitably fastened, are tvvo other tanks, D D, one of which is provided With the supply-piped, and the-other with the` discharge-pipe d. Instead of fastening the"tanks to the sides of the furnace, their inner Walls may be made to constitute the said sides of furnace, thereby entirely displacing the parts of the sides of the latter where it is brought in contact with the said tanks. Upon the furnace A is placed a pan or boiler, E, into which the fluid, after having passed through the tanks D D C, is ejected from the discharge-pipe d by means of gravitation or hydrostatic pressure, the liquid being fed to the said tanks through the supply-pipe d from a reservoir illed with the liquid.
It Will be observed that, as the liquid is passed through the above process, it Will absorb a portion of the Waste heat emitted by the furnace, and the liquid also thus become heated, requiring less, amount of heat under the pan or boiler E, consequently diminishing the quantity of fuel to be used to raise the liquid to the evaporating-point in the pan E, thus effecting a saving of the fuel, which is an important item to be considered.
The invention is applicable to furnaces for evaporating the extracts of barks and other vegetable substances; also, for the evaporation of brine in the manufacture of salt, and to furnaces for other like purposes.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim', and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The tank C, passing under the fire-grate B, connecting With the tanks D D arranged i1pon the side of the furnace A, and provided With the supply and discharge pipes d and d', and evaporating-pan E, all combined and arranged as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name this 27th day of August, A. D. 1872, in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
M. P. HAYES.
