Be it known that I, ELOY RODRIGUEZ, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Fajardo, Porto Rico, have invented certain new and useful Improve.
ments in Double-Acting High-Pressure Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to pumps and has for its object to provide a high pressure double acting pump particularly designed for pumping up syrup to a high elevation in the manufacture of granulated sugar.
Another object of my invention is to provide a construction which will render the construction durable and greatly increase the efficiency of the pump.
A further object is to provide double valves at the inlet and outlet of the pump, so that in case of injury to one of the double valves, the work will not have to be interrupted, as is the case withthe hitherto em ployed single valve pumps, but could be continued until such time when the interruption of the work could Atake place without affecting the contents of the pump.
Vith these and other objects in view which will clearly appear from the detailed description, my invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully explained and set forth in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings which form part of this specification, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the pump; Fig. 2 a cross section on line 2-2 of Fig.`1; Fig. 3 an enlarged plan view of the seat of one of the double valves and Fig. 1 an enlarged longitudinal section through one of the double valves.
Referring specifically to the drawings, the pump consists of a cylindrical casting 1 formed with a cylinder 2 of brass or the like in which works a piston 3 whose rod extends outwardly through a stufng box 4 made in one of the end covers of the cylinder. The lower part of the casting which constitutes the base is provided with lateral hollow extensions 5, one at each end thereof, which extensions serve as casinos for inlet valves 12 to be hereafter more fully described. The upper compartment a is in .open dommunication with a passage l arranged at. one end of the cylinder 1 and in advance of the corresponding end of the cylinder 2. This upper compartment has an open top to permit the insertion of the said inlet valves and is normally closed by a removable cover 6. The lower compartment c is in open communication with a passage 12 which extends longitudinally of the cylinder and the ends of which slope downwardly as shown. The upper and lower compartments in 'each of the two casings 5 separated by said partitions are tightly closed against each other by' said valves 12. The object of the intermediate compartment c formed between the two partitions will appear from the details of the further description. The upper part of the cylinder 1 is formed to a rectangular casing 7 which, by partitions 7 72 integral therewith, is divided into four separate compartments. The partition 7 extends longitudinally and somewhat above the inner circumference of the cylindrical part of the casting dividing the casing 7 into upper and lower compartments d, e. The partition 7 2 extends centrally and transversely through the casing 7 dividing each of the compartments d, e into two halves, so that four compartments are formed, two on each side of the partition 7. The lower compartments are each at their outer ends e in open com munication with the respective ends of the cylindrical part of the casting 1. The upper compartment d which is open on top is .adapted to be closed by a plate 8. Mounted over said plate 8 is a dome 9. Both, plate 8 and dome 9, are adapted to be screwed or otherwise fixed to and suitably tightened against the top of the casing 7 by a packing 10 of suitable material arranged between the upper flanged edge of the casing 7 and the plate and between the latter and the flanged The upper face of the partition 72 is adapted to be Hush with the upper edge of the casing 7 and a similar packing 10 may be provided between said upper face of the partition 7 2 and the plate 8 in order to tightly close the upper compartments CZ, l against each other. The lower face of the partition extends downwardly to be in close contact with the other circumference of the cylinder 2. A suitable packing (not shown) may also be interposed between said partition and said cylin der to produce a tight closure.
The partition 7 is provided with a discharge passage 73 which extends longitudinally therethrough. One end of said passage leads outwardly through the casing 7 to be connected to a pipe section 11 which is suitably fixed to the casing and which may be connected to a pipe (not shown) leading to a higher elevation to which the liquid is to be transferred by said pump.
The other end of said passage leads upward through the' partition 7 2 and through an opening 8` provided in the plate 8, and communicates with the interior of the dome 9.
The dome into which the liquid is raised and from which the same is discharged through said passages 8, 7 3 is tightly closed against the compartments d, e of the casing 7 by sets of valves of the same construction and working in the same manner as the inlet valves 12 in the casings 5. In the present example there are'four double valves in each of the four compartments.
Each of the said valves, both at the inlet and discharge portions of the casting 1, comprises a double valve body and consists of a ,central pin or spindle 13, two superposed circular disks 14 of equal diameter and a valve body 15 over each disk 14.
Each disk 14 serves as a valve seat and is formed with several openings or passages 14 and circumferential thread 142 whereby the seats are fixed inposition within the pump. Each of the two valve bodies is formed with a gasket 16 and is slidably mounted on the pin or spindle 13. The valve bodies are actuated by pressure springs 17. In the present example the coil spring 17 of the lower valve body has its upper end bearing against the upper valve seat 14, while the upper end of the coil of the upper valve body rests against or engages a nut 18 carried by the upper end of the pin 13. The pin or spindle 13 may be fixed to the seat 14 of the lower valve asshown. In the casings 5, the partitions 5, 52 serve as supports for the valve seats or disks 14. To this end the partitions are each provided with a threaded opening 53 into which the respective disk 14 is screwed. The distance between the two partitions 5', 52 is so a'dmeasured as to permit a sufficient upward movement of the lower valve body during the action of the pump. Thus the compartment serves as a casing for the lower valve body of each double valve.
The valve seats 14 in the upper part of the pump are supported by the partitions 7 and plate 8 in a similar manner, by providing therein threaded openings 74 and 82 'respectively into which the disks 14 are screwed.
The mode of operation of the pump is as follows:
On moving the piston from its end position shown in Fig. 1 to the left, the suction created at the right end of the cylinder 1 will allow the double valve 15 at the right lower end of the cylinder to be raised by the pressure of the liquid owing into and filling the passage 12 of the pump,.while the left hand lower double valve will be maintained in closed position owing to the compression at the opposite end of the cylinder. The liquid will enter the cylinder through the raised right hand lower valves, which valves will remain in raised or open position until the piston begins its return stroke. At that moment Ythe lower right hand valves will close, while the lower left hand valves and the right hand upper valves will open. In consequence thereof the liquid will enter the cylinder through the passage 1 at the left end thereof and the liquid previously raised in front of the piston will be forced through the right hand upper valves into the dome 9 and thence through passages 8, 73 and pipe 11 into the transfer pipe (not shown). During the next stroke the pressure at the rear of the piston will cause the liquid to open the left upper valves and to pass into the dome and thence through passages 8 and '73 to the transfer pipe, while fresh liquid will pass into the pump through the lower right hand valves as already described.
It will be seen that once started the pump will become entirely filled with the liquid and the slightest movement of the piston forward or backward will cause a discharge of the liquid into the dome. In this manner a continuous pumping action and such high pressure is obtained as will enable to raise the liquid to a high elevation. This is particularly advantageous for the process of making granulated sugar from syrup, where the syrup is raised to the evaporation and centrifugal pumps generally arranged at high elevations from the ground.
The advantage of using double valves Vboth at the inlet and discharge of the pump is that in case of injury to any one of the valve bodies of a double valve, the work of the pump need not be discontinued, but can go on until the pump has been entirely emptied. With syrup and similar liquids which have the tendency to acidify it would mean much waste were the liquid left in the pump until the injured valve is repaired or put in working condition.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a pump or the like, the combination with the stationary walls of a valve chamber, of a double valve consistin of two superposed perforated disks serving as valve seats, both said seats being screwed in the said stationary Walls, movable valve bodies over said seats and a common spindle fixed in one of said valve seats, and on which said valve bodies are movably mounted.
2. In a pump or the like, a valve Chamber divided by a partition Wall into tWo compartments, said partition Wall and the bottom of the said valve chamber having each a threaded perforation, a double valve comprising tWo superposed, perforated and threaded' disks screwed in said .partition and the bottom of the said valve chamber,
and serving as valve seats, valve bodies movably mounted over said valve seats, and a common spindle ixed in one of said valve 15 seats and on which said valve bodies are slidably guided.
