UNITED STATES 1,535,643 PATENT 1 OFFICE.
JOHN ASTROM, 0F FORT WAYNE, INDIANA, ASSIGIN'OR 'ro FORT WAYNE ENGINEER- ING & MANUFACTURING 00., or FORTWAYNE, INDIANA.
PUMP.
Application filed November 23, 1922. Serial No. 602,801.
To all whom it may concern. Be it known that I, JOHN AsTnoM, a citizen -of the United States, and resident of Fort Wayne, in the county'of Allen and State'of'Indiana, have invented certain new and useiul Improvements in Pumps; and I do here y declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
The invention relates to new and useful improvements in pumps, more particularly of that type adapted for use in connection with the handling of fuel oil and the inflammable oils, or for other uses where it is desirous to provide acompact pump unit.
It is the general object of the invention to simplify and otherwise improve the structure and to increase the efficiency of pumps I accessible.
the number 1 designates a cran of this character and also to increase their durability under the average condition of use. The discharge valve is carried by a readily removable plug head and is readily The fact also that there is no suction valve makes for simplicity.
It is the object of my invention to provide a pump of the character described which will prevent the leakage of liquid from the pump cylinder and the crank case, or from any ments. As t e pump is used for oils, the matter of leakage is of the greatest. importance. The arrangement is such that liquid escaping from the discharge chamber past the plunger reaches only the suction chamber and remains entrapped.
The pump illustratedin the accompanying drawing possesses this feature, and it is my purpose to improve the non-leaking feature by providing a stuifing box for the plunger which is entirely remote from the working cylinder and valve and which is not subjected to the pressure of the oil in any manner within the pump.
With the above and other objects and. advantages in view, which will be apparent as the description proceeds, my invention resides in the novel features of' construction,
combination and arrangement of the parts as hereinafter described and defined by the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings:
' The figure shows a vertical longitudinal sectional view through a pump constructed in accordance with my inventlon.
Referring now to the drawingI in detail, case, the
art associated with these elesame having cast integral therewith the crosshead guideway 2 and a frame 3. The crank casing 1 is of the usual circular shape and the crosshead guideway opens therein for the reception of the pitman 4 which connects the drive shaft 5 with the crosshead 6.
The guideway 2 is closed at the end by a vertical wall 7 through which a piston plunger 8 is slidable for connection with the crosshead 6.
Secured to the wall 7 is a housing 9 having therein a suction compartment 10' and a discharge compartment 11, each having a common division wall 12. The compartments l0 and 11 are provided with inlet 10 and outlet opening 11 respectively, f0r the fluid to be pumped, and wlth airdomes 10 14, the purpose of which. will be apparent as the description proceeds.
The housing 9 has'therein between the several compartments previously referred to and the wall 7, a compartment 15 for the reception of suitable packing material 16 and a packing gland unit 16, the latter being ad ustable by the usual adjusting means shown in dotted lines.
The compartment 11 has arranged in its end wall, and. in axial-alignment with the cylinder, a removable plu 17, the central portion of which is provide with an inward hollow projection 18, the central portion of which has slidable therethru the stem of a disk valve 18, the head of which closes the end of the cylinder 13. In order that the valve may at certain times be moved away from the end of the cylinder I have provided resilient holding means in the form of a coil spring 19 encircling the projection 18 and having its ends bearing upon the valve and plug.
Referring now to the operation of the pump: As the pistonmoves away from the ports 14 leading to the inlet suction compartn'ient. \Vhen this takes place, the vacuum within the cylinder-draws the liquid from the compartment 10 into the cylinder, filling the same. On the forward movement of the piston the ports 14 are closed, trapping between the valveand the plug the liquld which on a further movementof the piston forces the valve-open, thus permitting the liquid to enter the discharge compartment and then pass thru the discharge opening.
From the foregoing, it is apparent that should the liquid within the cylinder, which is under pressure, leak past the pistonit will pass out thru the ports and lose its pressure in the compartment 10, before reaching the stufling box. Thus at no time will the packing be subjected to pressure, therefore eliminating the necessity of adjustment of the packing.
Claim:
A pump comprising a housing having an intake chamber and a delivery chamber, said chambers being provided with outer walls, and said chambers being separated by a partition wall, a separate and distinct sleeve carried by said partition Wall and projecting into said delivery chamber and extending completely through said intake chamber and into the outer Wall of said intake chamber and forming a cylinder, said sleeve havaplurality of apertures therethrough opening into said intake chamber, a resiliently urged valve positioned within said delivery chamber and contacting with the outer end of said sleeve, and a plunger mounted for reciprocation within said sleeve and adapted to close said apertures on its delivery stroke, whereby the reciprocation of said plunger does not affect liquid in said intake chamber until the apertures in said sleeve are uncovered by said plunger. In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Fort Wayne, in the county of Allen and State of Indiana.
