CHARLEs L. DE MARTIN AND HARRY C. FOSTER, OE CoNNERsvILLE, INDIANA,
AssIe-NoRs To INDIANA LAMP COMPANY, or CONNERsvILLE, INDIANA, A COR- PORATION.
Application filed April 7, 1919. Serial No. 288,103. l
To all Ivhom t muy concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES L. DE
I MARTIN and HARRYC. FOSTER, citizens of the United States, and residents of Connersville, county of Fayette, and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Lamp Construction; and we do hereby de- Clare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals refer to like parts.
This invention relates to a lamp construction, and more particularly to electric head lights 4or spot lights for automobiles, motor boats and other uses wherein a strongly prowhich slot is then closed by clamping the finishing rim about the periphery lof the lamp casing. This construction permits a lamp to be made by the simplest andI most economical stamping process.
In the accompanying drawings which are made a part of this application Figure 1 isa central vertical cross section through the lamp. Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof,
with the upper portion broken away. Fig. 3 is an enlarged section taken on the line 3 3 of .Fig-2. Fig. 4 shows' a .modified form of.means for retaining the reflector against the lens.
There is shown herein a lamp having a lmetal lamp casing 10, which extends continuously inwardly in front of the lens 11 so as to form an inwardly extendingv flange 12. In the upper portion ofsaid lamp casing there is a slot 13 having the Width ofthe thickness of the lens 11, and which extends half Way around the periphery of said casing for permitting the lens 11 to be inserted therethrough into said casing. The rellector 14 is inclosed in the casing 10 in position to abut against the inner surface of the lens 11 so as to exert an outward pressure thereon caused by the screws 15, which screw through the vrear of the lamp cas- Specicton of Letters Patent.
LAMP CONSTRUCTION.

ing and engage the resilient plate 16 mounted on the rear of the reflector. The plate 16 is of a resilient material so asto cause said reflector to be spring pressed against.
said lens. There is a nickeled metal ring 17 between the lens 11 and the outer edge of the reflector 14, which has an inner diameter slightly less than the diameter of split finishing rim 18 is adapted to surround and inclose the flange 12 and outer periphery of the lamp casing, and is provided with a projectmg corrugation 19 which may be 'formed of the strip of metal cut from the outer r1m of the lamp casing for inserting the lens. The projection 19 is adapted to engage in the slot 13 so as to aid inholding v the lens in position and fill in the slot after the lens is in place. The split rim 18 .is secured togetherby the bolt 20 on the lower portionfthereof, and as said bolt draws the endsof the rim together it clamps the flange 12, the lens -11 and the outer periphery vof the lamp Casing together so as to tighten and strengthen the construction. at the same time giving it the appearance of the common type of lens rim.
The lamp socket 21 extends through the rear of the lamp-.casing into the. reflector for supporting the lamp 22 therein, and is surrounded by a resilient metal housing 24 supporting saidv socket and for permitting -the sliding adjustment thereof.
The modified view shown in Fig. 4'shows another means of forcing the 'reflector 14 against the lens, 'namely Tiy a single screw 26, ,which screws through the'v rear of the lampv casing against the housing 24 mounted onthe rear of the reflector, the lamp socket being slidably adjustable in said housing.
' v The invention claimed is;
1. In a lamp construction having a parabolic lamp casing, a flange integral with and forming a. part of said casing extending radiallyinwardly from the outer periphery thereof and having a semi-circular peripheral slot, a circular lens adapted to be inserted through said slot into said casing so as to lie adjacent said flange, a re- Hector mounted in ysaid casing and abutting said lens for holding it in position against said flange, means for resiliently and ad` justably securing said reflector in position for holding said lens. and a resilient rim adapted to be mounted over said flange and the periphery of said casing for inclosing and locking .the lens therein.
:2. In a. lamp structure having alamp casing. with a slot extending partially around the periphery thereof. an inwardly extending flange integral with and forming a part of said lamp casing, a lens adapted to be inserted in said casing through the slot therein, a reflector abutting said lens, a rim adapted to be mounted over said flange and the periphery7 of said casing, and a rib 0n said rim adapted to extend into said slot -for closing it after the lens is in place.
3. A lamp structure having a ylamp casing with a slot extending partially around the .periphery thereof, a lens adapt-ed to be inserted in said casing through the slot therein,` a rim adapted to be mounted over said casing and lens, and a rib on said rim adapted to extend into said slot for closing it after the lens is in place.
l. In a lamp structure having a lamp casing with a slot extending partially around the periphery thereof, an inwardly extending flange integral with and forminga part of said lamp casing, a lens adapted to be inserted in said casing through the slot therein, a reflector adapted to abut said lens, a resilient plate on-said reflector, means on said casing for engagingsaid plate and forcing said reflector and lens outwardly, and a rim adapted to be mounted over said flange and the periphery of said casing for of said lamp casing, a lens adapted to be inserted in said casing through the slot therein, a reflector adapted to abut said lens, a resilient plate on said reflector, means on said casing for engaging said resilient plate and forcing said reflector and lens out' wardly, a rim adapted to be mounted over said flange and t-he periphery of said casingand a ribon said rim adapted to entend into said slot forl closing it after the lens is in place.
6.- In a lamp structurha'ving a lamp casing,'a lens mounted in the front of said casing, a reflector Within said casing adapted to abut against said lens, a resilient platel mounted on the rear of said reflector, and/ adjustable means on said casing actuated from the exterior thereof for engaging said plate so as to resiliently force said reflector against said lens.
' In Witness whereof, We have hereunto affixed our signatures.
