LAMP STRUCTURE Filed March 29, 1957 INVENTORS NORB'ERT P. WORDEN B CHARLES F.FOLEY -ATTORNEY$ Patented Aug. 15, 1939 PATENT OFFICE I LAIWP STRUCTURE Norbert P. Worden and Charles F. Foley, Detroit,
Mich., assignors to C. M. Hall Lamp Company, Detroit, Mich, a corporation of Michig an Application March 29, 1937, Serial N0. 133,666
6 Claims.
This invention relates generally to lamps for motor vehicles and refers more particularly to the type designed for use as head lamps.
I One of the essential objects of the invention 5 is to provide a lamp of the type mentioned wherein approximately one-half of the housing is a die casting that is adapted to be mounted upon a suitable support such as a fender or radiator of a motor vehicle and is provided with means for pj'carrying the other elements of the housing including a sheet metal cover and a bezel.
Another object is to provide a lamp wherein a partition member within the housing cooperates 7 x with the die casting and bezel aforesaid to form a dust and moisture proof chamber for the lighting element of the lamp.
Another object is to provide a lamp wherein the partition just mentioned carries the lighting unit and suitable adjusting means therefor.
Other objects, advantages and novel details of construction of this invention will be made more apparent as this description proceeds, especially when considered in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a lamp embodying our invention; s
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view throug the lamp illustrated in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a front elevation of the lamp;
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 44 of Figure 3;
Figure 5 is a fragmentary top plan View of the partition member, retaining spring and support therefor.
Referring now to the drawing, A is a lamp housing having a die cast base section I, a sheet metal cover 2, and a bezel 3. As shown, the base section I forms approximately the lower half of the housing and is provided at its forward end with a supporting portion 4 for the bezel. Any suitable means such as the spaced studs 5 and 6, respectively, rigid with the base section I may be used to mount the lamp upon a suitable support such as a fender or radiator of a motor vehicle. The cover 2 is mounted on the base section I and bezel 3 and may be held in place by a screw 2 so that it may be opened or removed at will to afford access to the interior of the housing. As shown, the screw 2 extends through the cover 2 and threadedly engages a bracket 2 fixed to the base section I. The bezel 3 has a cast metal frame 1 that is preferably fastened by screws 8 to the base section of the housing and carries a fluted and prismed lens 9. Any suitable means such as the spring clips l fastened to the frame I of the bezel may be used to hold the lens in place.
The lighting element is preferably in the form of a hermetically-sealed unit H containing a filament l2 and having a lens l3 and reflector M at the front and rear thereof. However, if desired, an open reflector and one or more bulbsv carried thereby (not shown) may be used instead. In either case the lighting element would be adjustably mounted upon a partition member l that cooperates with the base casting l and bezel 3 to form a dust and moisture proof chamber l6 for said lighting element. As shown, this partition is formed of sheet metal and has an annular attaching portion ll sleeved upon an annular shoulder l8 formed by portions of the cast metal bezel 3. The main portion l9 of this partition is preferably dished or semi-circular in configuration and is connected by an annular vertical flange to the annular attaching portion ll; The hermetically-sealed unit II has an annular bead 22 at the juncture of the reflector l4 and lens 13 thereof that seats in a semi-circular flange 23 of U-cross section projecting laterally from a vertical ring 24 disposed substantially parallel to the vertical flange 20 of the partition. Any suitable means such as a spring clip 25 fastened to the ring 24 at the top thereof may be used tohold the unit II in place on the semicircular flange 23. Three screws 26 extend freely through this ring 24 at spaced points thereof and threadedly engage adjusting nuts 21 upon the back of the vertical flange 20 of the partition. Coil springs 28 are sleeved on these screws to maintain the ring 24 in proper position relative to the flange 20 depending upon the adjustment of the screws.
For holding the partition IS in place, there is a substantially U-shaped spring or bail 30 carried by an upstanding portion 3| of the base section l and engaging a groove 32 in the main portion 119 of the partition [5. As shown, the legs 33 and 34, respectively, of the U engage spaced lugs 35 and 36, respectively, on the upstanding portion 3l, while the base 31 of the U engages the groove 32.
Thus, with this construction the light projected from the unit l I may be directed or aimed as desired by adjustment of the screws 26. Such screws 26 are within the housing and therefore normally concealed. However, they may be readily reached for any purpose by simply opening or removing the sheet metal cover 2. Likewise, the partition l5 may be readily removed after the retaining spring 30 has been released to afford access to anything within the chamber Hi. If desired, a sheet metal ornamental bead 38 may be snapped onto a bead 39 integral with the base section I at the junction of said section with the sheet metal cover 2.
What we claim as our invention is:
1. In a lamp structure, an ovoid body split longitudinally substantially along a horizontal plane axially of the lamp and provided at one end with a removable bezel, the lower section of said body being attachable to a support and forming a seat for the bezel, the upper section being mounted on said lower section and bezel, a partition within said body cooperating with one of said sections and said bezel to form a dust-proof chamber, a ring substantially parallel and adjustably connected to said partition and having a substantially semi-circular flange of substantially U-cross section, and a light unit carried by said flange and connected to said ring.
2. In a lamp, a body having a base section, a bezel seated on said section at one end thereof and a top section seated on said base section and bezel, a partition in the body cooperating with the base section and bezel to form a dustproof chamber, said partition having a marginal portion sleeved upon a part of the bezel, the central portion of the partition being dished, and the portion between said marginal and central portions extending substantially at right angles to the longitudinal median line of the body, a ring substantially parallel and adjustably connected to the intermediate portion of said partition, and a light unit carried by said ring in the dished portion of said partition.

A lamp having a casing provided at one end with a bezel, a partition in said casing having an annular attaching portion sleeved upon a portion of said bezel, said partition having a dished central portion and provided between said central portion and annular attaching portion with a substantially vertical flange, a light unit between the bezel and partition and carried by the latter, and means for detachably holding the partition against displacement from the bezel including a projection on a part of the casing in rear of the partition, and a brace extending between the projection and dished central portion of said partition.
5. In a lamp, a sectional housing having an opening at one end, a bezel for said opening having an annular portion projecting within the open end of the housing, one section of the housing serving as a seat for the bezel, the other section of the housing overlapping and seated on said bezel and lower section, and a partition within the housing mounted upon the annular portion of the bezel and cooperating with the latter to form a chamber for a light unit.
