Description

C. KUDERER.
MOTORCYCLE BACK REST.
APPLICATION FILED Ffa 8 1919 Patented June 1, 1920.
@brow e UNITED STATES CHARLES KUDERER, PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
MOTORCYCLE BACK-REST.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led February 8, 1919. SeriaI'No. 275.827.
To all fte/0m t may concern.'
Be it known that I, CHARLES KUDERER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Motorcycle Back-Rests, of which the following is a specification. Y
This .invention relates to a motorcycle back rest'and has for its primary object to provide yieldable means for accommodating the movements of the body of the rider.
An object of the invention is to simplify a construction of this character without sacrificing the efficiency thereof and besides to so arrange the parts that they may be readily arranged in place or removed.
Another object of the invention is the novel manner of arranging the spring so that a maximum amount of resiliency thereof can be obtained.
lith these and other objects in view the invention will be better understood from the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figure l is a side elevation of my invention partly in section.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the plate.
The numeral l designates a vbracket supported in any suitable manner for pivotal movement.
a plurality of notches 3 formed in the rod 4. As the bracket and rod do not form a part of this invention, being' protected in my former applications, further detailed description will be eliminated for the purpose of clearness.
The rod 4 is yieldably forced toward the rider so as to properly engage the arm pits of the rider and to allow proper movements thereof, by a plate 5 pivoted tothe bracket as indicated at 6 and yieldably forced into engagement with the rod by coil springs 7 shown in this particular instance as two in number, one upon each side of the rod 4. Thus it will be seen that in a substantial manner the rod 4 is freeto yieldably swing about the pin 2;
This bracket l is provided with a pin 2 having an adjustable relation withy For the purpose of holding ythe pin'2 in locking engagement with a notch and allowing a quick disconnection thereof when the the rod 4 is being adjusted, I provide lockingl means 8. In the particular showing the locking'means 8 consists of a plunger 9 slidably mounted in the opening 10 in the bracket and provided with a head 11 bearing against the rod 4 at a point in alinement with the pin 2. The head Il is acted upon by a coil spring ll2 that yieldably holds the plunger in engagement with the rod 4 and holds the notch 3 in detachable engagement with the pin 2.
In concluding my description, I wish to call attention to the fact thatV the yieldable means may be constructed in various othermanners than shown andthe parts arranged in different relation but I have found out from practice that the construction illustrated in the drawing has proven very etli-A cient, both from the viewpoint of cost and the expense in assembling. This being the case I do not desire to be limited in any manner except as set forth in the claimv hereunto appended.
Having described my invention, what claim is:
In Va device of the character described, a bracket having upper and lower horizontally disposed arms, a rod extending through said arms yand provided in its outer edge Patented June 1, 1920.
with a plurality of downwardlyand outf wardly inclined notches, a pin extending transversely of the lower arm and adapted to itrinto any one of said notches for adjustably and rockably supporting the rod, means in contact with the outer edge of the rod remote from and above the pin for forcing said rod inwardly of the bracket about said pin, a plunger slidablein the bight portion of the bracket and provided on its inner end with a frustospherical head, and means for forcing said plunger inwardly of the bracket so as to hold said head in contact with the inner edge of the rod, the line of contact between the rod and head being inthe plane of the axis of the pin.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
