Description

UNITE SA CFF.
HAND-PRESS FOR PRINTING.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 13,423, dated August 14, 1855.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, DEXTER H. CHAMBER- LAI'N, of IVest Roxbury, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvement in Percussion Hand-Presses, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a plan; Figs. 2 and 3 side elevations, a portion of Fig. 3 being broken away to show the parts within.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried it out and the construction and operation of my press.
' which the impression is to be taken.
F is a knob or handle by which this block is operated.
The ink roll G is carried by the arm H secured to the base A in such position that as the block E is run back as represented in Fig. 2 the types shall be inked. The arm which carries the ink roll may if preferred be secured to the lever C back of the block E, in which case any accidental pressure upon the lever when the parts are in the position represented in Fig. 2 would not tend to displace the roll.
The bed I upon which the impression is made, is suitably covered with cloth or other elast-ie substance and is pivoted to the base A that it may be made to assume an inclina` tion adapted to the thickness of the block E and its plate; it is secured in any desired position in the following manner: The rod or shaft b attached to the bed rests in bearings rising from the base A down upon which it is forced and held by the clasp K, and nut L. The pin M upon the lever C stops the block E directly over the center of the bed I, and in order to adjust this bed to the surface of the types, the nut L is loosened and the block E is forced down upon the bed, as seen in Fig. 3. The bed is thus made to assume the required position in which it is held by again tightening the nut L, and if the plate at any time be replaced by another of a different thickness, the bed may instantly be adjusted thereto as above described.
Operation: The press is operated by the hand upon the knob F (Fig. 3,) the block E being slid back and forth upon the lever' C so as to bring it alternately over the roll G for the purpose of inking the types, and into the position seen in Fig. 8, when it is pressed down by the hand for the purpose of giving the impression.
That I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. The within described percussion hand press consisting essentially of the block or type carrier E sliding upon the lever C the ink roller G and bed I operating in the manner and for the purpose substantially as herein described.
2. I claim the method substantially as herein described of adjusting the bed to the surface of the types whatever may be the thickness of the plate which carries them for the purpose set forth.
DEXTER H. CHAMBERLAIN.
