To all whom it may concern .Be it known that I, FREDERICK IDDoN, a British subject, residing. at School Lane, Leyland, county of Lancaster, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rubber Mixing, Grinding, Sheeting, and Similar Mills, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in the driving of the rollers of rubber mixing, grinding, sheeting and warming up mills and other mills or apparatus similar thereto.
Two types of such mills are usually employed known as single geared mills and double geared mills respectively; In the single geared mills the rollers are driven by one large driving wheel carried on the journal of the back roller, and a wheel carried on the other end of the shaft of the back roller gears with a similar wheel carried on the journal of the front roller. These two wheels may be of the same diameter, in
which case the surface speed of the two rollers would be alike, or'they may be of unequal diameter, in which case the sur face speed of the two rollers would be unequal, in which case the mills are usually referred to as being friction geared. i
In the double geared mills the rollers are driven by two large driving wheels carried on the journals of the back and front rollers respectively and on opposite sides of the mills. The wheel driving the back roller usually engages with a suitable pinion carried on the main driving shaft, (usually placed underneath the mills) while the wheel.

back and front rollers rotate at thesanie speed or the gearing may be such that the mill is friction geared, 2'. e. the hack and front rollers rotate at different speeds.
By means of additional gear wheels carried on the main driving shaft and gearing with suitable wheels carried on the counter shaft (the. single geared mills require a counter shaft for this purpose) the relative speeds of the rollers may be changed by means of clutches engaging with the said wheels. Mills fitted with such change speed wheels are 'however, limited in the number of speeds and owing to mechanical d1fiieult'es and complications are seldom provided with more than two speeds, while at the same time the employment of such change speed wheels and the necessary arrangements for changing the speed are confined in use to single or individual machines. The purpose and object of this invention is to provide a means of driving and varying the speedsof the rollers of rubber mixing, grinding, sheeting, warming up. and similar mills, in a manner unattainable by the ordinary method of wheel gearing, and which may be also used in driving a single mill or for driving a multiple number of mills. The invention consists essentially in driving the front rollers of a single mill or the front rollers of a series of mills the back rollers of a single mill or the back rollers ofa series of mills from independent variable sources so-that the speed ratio between the front and back rollers can be varied to any desired amount.
The invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a rubber mill which may be used. for the purpose of mixing, grinding, sheeting, and warming up.
Fig. 2- is a plan of same.
Fig. 3 is a transverse section of Fig. l.
The source of power consists of two variable speed electric motors A A each motor capable of developing approximately one half of the maximum power that is required and necessary to drive one'mill or series of mills. Each of the motors A A is provided with a suitable speed reducing gear B B which is shown as double helical spur gears but which may be of the worm and worm wheel, straight spur, bevel, .or chain type, or any suitable combination of these gears.
The motor A. drives the back roller D (or the back rollers of a series of mills) through the reduction gears 13 and shaft C on which is carried a pinion E engaging with the wheel F.
The motor A drives the front roller D (or the front rollers of a series of mills) through the reduction gears B and shaft C on-which is carried a pinion E, engaging with the wheel F.
The motor A and reduction gears B are reduction. gears B are errengedto drive the roller D (or series of tront rollers} st speeds varying from 5 to 15 revolutions per minute, or at any such speeds as may determined or required. I
The speeds or" the two motors may be varied by means of suitable speed controllers or resistances. An index or dial or other such means is preferably attached to the controllers whereby the speeds of front roller or rollers and the speeds of the back roller or rollers are respectively indicated.
It will be undestood that any such speed controlling device or devices must necessarily be placed Within easy reach of the operator, or in the case Where a. number of machines are in Work the control of the speeds would be under the supervision of en operator depot-ed for this Work.
It will be readily understood that by operating the controller or controllers eny speeds may be selected that are Within the limits or range of the motors A. A. 'For instance, the back roller or rollers may run at any speed from 3.0 to 30 R. P. M. While the front roller or rollers roe-y heron at any speed from 5 to 15 P. M. which. represents 9. frictional speed of 6 to 1 (max.- imom) and an even speed of 15 (mesiniurn).
The speeds of the rollers referred to above are those in common use in the rubber tr-ode, but may be altered to suit any special drocess operations or conditions re 'UUGG.
