UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

IMPROVEMENT lN HAT-BODIES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 134,206, dated December 24, 1872.
f sents my improvement in perspective.
The said improvement is designed to remedy a defect in the side-crown of the abovementioned class of hat-bodies. In the manufacture of the gossamer body or foundation of what are commonly called dress-hats, or of hats of similar shape, the side-crown consists of one or more pieces of muslin cut into the shape 0f a parallelogram, or nearly so, and
. formed into a tube, usually by gluing the two ends together with shellac or other suitable gum. The seam or juncture of these ends, in
I, whatever way they may be united, frequently rises or sinks after the cover has been put on the body, thereby breaking the uniformity of the surface and presenting an unsightly appearance. This defect is incident not only to gossamer but to wooden and all other hatbodies or foundations, which consist of a woven, knit, or plaited fabric; and in order to avoid it I have devised the improvement represented in the drawing, to wit, a seamless side-crown.
The material ofthe seamless side-crown may be either gossamer, cotton, wood, Manila grass, or any other woven, knit, or plaited fabric possessing sufficient firmness to form, when stiffened with shellac or other suitable gum,
the foundation of a dress-hat or hat of similar shape or it may consist of a mixture of two or more of these materials, the fabric being always woven, knit, or plaited in tubular shape, substantially as shown in the drawing. The side-crown may be composed of more than one of these tubes, forming several thicknesses orlayers, the several tubes being of the same or of different material, but each tube consisting of a woven, knit, or plaited fabric. The several tubesl are attached together by shellac or other suitable gum. The tip and brim are attached to the side-crown in the usual manner.
1 What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent Of the United States, is-
Thc above-described side-crown of a hatbody, consisting of one or more seamless tubes of woven, knit, or plaited fabric.
GEORGE JOHNSON.
