Description

1. c. MULLET-T.
Pen-Holders.
Patented Dec. 24, 1872.
WITNESSES? -UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIOE.
JOHN G. MULLETT, OF FREDONIA, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN PEN-HOLDERS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN C. MULLETT, of Fredonia, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Pen-Holders, of which the following is a specification and I do hereby declare that in the same is contained a full, clear, and exact description of my said invention, reference beinghad to the accompanyin g drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to a metallic guard or guide attached to the cylindrical pen-holdin g device or ferrule of the pen-holder, tending, when brought to bear against the surface of a ruler, to aid the penman in ruling lines by means of an ordinary writing-pen, and to prevent blotting or other inconveniences arising from the want of adaptability of such a pen to the purpose named.
In the further description of my invention .which follows due reference must be had to made of such convenient length as will allow it to bear firmly against the ruler when the point of the pen rests upon the surface to be delineated. To enable the penman to shift the part d from contact with the ink when the pen is to be dipped therein the guard is adapted to slide upon the ferrule of the holder, the slot 6 operating with the pin b to effect the desired result. The pin and slot are also the means of preventing the cylindrical part of the guard from turning upon the ferrule of the pen-holder.
The mode of using my invention is obvious.
The slotted guard may be stamped from any suitable sheet metal, and afterward rendered part cylindrical by methods well-known to manufacturers.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
In combination with the cylindrical penholding device or ferrule of a pen-holder, the pin b and slotted guard D d, substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
In testimony whereof I have hereto subscribed my name, in Fredonia, county of Chautauqua and State of New York, this 9th day of November, in the year of our Lord 1872.
JOHN G. MULLETT.
