Description

z. e. HAYDEN COMBINATION RULE AND ADJUSTABLE COMPASS.
APPLICAT ON FILED JULY 23, 1919.

7 I Ihl/Efl'zor Z. Hayden.
ZERAH HAYDEN, OF E'LDORA, IOWA.
isessoo.
Applicatidn filed July 1915.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, Zmmrr G. HAYDEN, a citizen of the United Sta residing at Elders, in the county 01" Hardin and State of lows, h vs invented certain new and i'ese'liul Improvements in Combination-Rules and Adjustable Compasses; and I do hereby declare the following to be a "hill, clear, and exact description or the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to drawing instruments and the primary object of the invention is to provide a combination rule and adjustable compass which can be efi'ectively used in school rooms for drawing circles.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved combination rule and compass embodying a suitable graduated plate having a plurality of equidistantly spaced openings therein for the reception of a marking point and an adjustable compass or pivot point arranged to engage the surface to be marked.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved meansior holding the pivot or compass point in adjusted position against accidental movement.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved means for removably attaching the pencil or marking point to the upper surface oi the ruler body.
A. still further object ol the invention is to provide an improved device of the above character which is durable and eihcient in use, one'that is simple and easy to manufacture, and one that can be placed upon the market at a reasonable cost.
With these and other objects in view,
the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved drawing instrument,
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same,
Fig. 3 is fragmentary bottom plan view of the same, and
Fig. l is a detail transverse section taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary transverse sectional view of the instrument.

Serial No. 312,739.
Ref rring to the drawings in detail wherein similar reference characters designatecorresponding part. througl'iout the several views the numeral 1 generally indicates the improved rawi instrument which includes a ruler having the elongated flat tcnec'l body 2-3 llzlf lg its side edges provided with suitable raduations The body has secured to l per surface adjacent one end thereoi' a casing 5 which constitutes a he dividing plate 6, which carguide for t ries' the compass or pivot point 7. The casing 5, as stated. is secured to the upper surface of the ruler adjacent one end thereof and extends longitudinally of the same and includes t is side walls 8 the end walls 9, and the upper wall 10 and the outstanding attaching flanges 11, which are adopted to receive suitable if: stoning elements 1), for holding the casing in correct position against accidental displacement. The forward end of the dividing plate 6 is provided with outstanding lugs 13 formed on the upper and lower suriace which protrude through a slot 14% formed in the upper wall of the casing and a slot 15 formed in the ruler body. The upper wall 10 is also provided with a longitudinally extending slot 16, through which protrudes a set screw 17 carried by the rear portion of the sliding plate 6 and this set screw is adapted to engage the upper surface of the ruler body to hold the plate in its adjusted position against accidental displacement. A hollow cylindrical extension 18 is carried by the plate 6 and extends up wardly from the upper lug l8 and slidably carries the pivot point 7, which also extends to the plate 6. An expansion spring 19 is coiled around the marking point 7 and the lower end thereof engages the upper surface of the lug 13 and the upper end thereof en gages the cap 20 which is slidably carried by the cylindrical extension 18 and has rigidly secured thereto the upper end of the pivot point 7. Thus it can be seen that by pressing on the cap 20, the pivot point will be brought into engagement with the work and permit the ruler body to be turned thereon. The body 2 is provided with a plurality of equidistantly spaced openings point 7 is depressed to bring the same into engagement with the work and the ruler body is turned thereon as a pivot.
A pair of spaced spring clips 22 is secured to the upper surface of the ruler bodyand forms means for detachably holding the marking instrument against accidental displacementon the ruler when the same is not in use. I The spring clips 22 each include a flat body 23 and the upstanding arcuate spring arms 24 which are gradually tapered toward their upper terminals- It can be seen that the spring arms are first bent back on the upper surface of the plate and then upwardly and outwardly.
From the foregoing description it can be seen that an improved drawing instrument is provided, which can he used as a ruler or a compass as desired and for many other purposes which will readily present themselves to the user of the instrument;
In aractice I have found that the form' of my invention illustrated in the accompanylng drawings and referred to U17 the above description, as the preferred embodiment, is the most efficient and practical, yet realizing the conditlons concurrent with the adoption of my devlce Wlll necessarlly-vary,
fl desire to emphasize that various minor changes in details of construction, proportlon and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, when required without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention as set forth.
What I claim as new is: A drawing instrument comprising a flat elongated body provided at one of its long} tudinal edges with graduations, the body being provided along its median dimension with a slot which is parallel with the edge at which the graduations are located, the body being provided at intervals along its length with openings in alinement with the longer axis of the slot, a guide mounted upon the body over the slot, a block slidably mounted in the guide and havinga portion entering the slot, means for fixing the block at an adjusted position with relation to the guide, and a spring pressed pin carried by the block and passing through the portion thereof which is located in the slot, the tension of the spring having a tendency to normally retain the end of the pin retracted within said portion.
In testimony whereof I afi'ix my signature in presence of witnesses.
