AUGUST KLINGELE, OF LORAIN, OHIO.
PENCIL-HOLDER.
Application filed February 18, 1920.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUeUs'r KLINGELE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lorain, in the county of Lorain and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pencil-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a pencil holder and more particularly to the class of combination attachments for holding stub pencils or other writing instruments.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a device or holder of this character wherein short length pencils orthe like can be conveniently held therein and clamped so that the same can be readily used for any purpose desired thereof, the holder being of novel form so as to accommodate a reversible member which is adapted to carry an eraser and a scratch-awl, thus enabling the eraser and awl to be used when occasion requires.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device or attachment of this character wherein a short pencil, irrespective of the cross sectional shape thereof, that is to say, whether the same be round, octagonal, or other shape, can be conveniently and securely held so that the said pencil can be manipulated by hand in the use thereof without the cramping, of the hand for the holding of the short length pencil as would ordinarily occur, while carried by the holder is a removable sleeve which serves to fasten the jaws of the holder in clamping relation and constitutes an attaching medium for a scratch-awl and eraser, thus making the attachment or holder a handy tool or instrument for use by carpenters or other artificers.
A further object is the provision of a holder of this character which is extremely simple in construction, readily and easily operated for the introduction and clamping of a pencil therein or its removal therefrom, thoroughly reliable and efficient in its purpose and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view the invention comprises the novel features of construction, combination of elements and arrangement of parts which will be more fully described in the following specification and set forth with particularity in the claims appended hereto.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of a holder Specification of Letters Patent.

constructed in accordance with the invention showing a short pencil held therein with the eraser in exposed position for use.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal transverse sectional view through the holder.
Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the ferrule or sleeve with the combined eraser and awl removed, the latter being shown in side elevation.
Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse sectional view through the clamping jaws of the holder showing the pencil engaged thereby and in section.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, A designates generally a pencil of short length of stub form and is of any ordinary well known construction, and B the holder hereinafter fully described.
The holder comprises a pair of jaw members 5 each being of substantially semi-circular shape or half tube form in cross section and said members are swingingly connected together through the medium of a pivot 6 passed transversely through crossed diagonal web portions 7 which unite with the member 5, lever portions 8 which are of greater length than said members 5 and each is of semicircular shape in cross section and tapers outwardly, the smaller end portions of said levers 8 being externally threaded at 9 for the detachable mounting of a sleeve or ferrule 10 thereon for a purpose presently described.
The sleeve or ferrule 10 is formed with internal intermediate threads 11 and outer threads 12 respectively, the intermediate threads 11 being adapted for detachable engagement with the threads 9 on the levers 8 when the said levers are moved together as shown by full lines in Fig. 1 of the drawing, so that the sleeve can telescope over the levers and detachably engage thereon, thus fastening the j aw members 5 closed for the clamping of the pencil A thereby.
The jaw members 5 internally thereof are formed with gripping ribs 13 so as to prevent the slipping of the pencil A longitudinally therein when clamped by said jaw members as will be obvious.
Removably fitted in the outer end of the sleeve or ferrule 10 is a combined scratchawl 14 and rubber eraser 15, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing, which in its united form is provided with screw- threads 16 and 17 respectively, externally thereof to permit its reversible engagement in the outer end of the ferrule or sleeve 10 so that either the awl 1% or the eraser 15 will be exposed for use. When the eraser 15 is to be used the awl 14 is inserted in the sleeve or ferrule 10 and the threads 16 detachably engage the threads 12 in said ferrule or sleeve, and when it is desired to use the awl let the eraser 15 is inserted in the sleeve or ferrule 10 and the threads 17 engaged with the threads 12 in said ferrule or sleeve so that the awl 14 will project therefrom for use.
To engage the pencil A in the holder the sleeve or ferrule 10is detached from the levers 8 and on spreading the same the jaw members 5 will beseparated for. the introduction of the pencil A therebetween and thereafter the jaw members 5 are brought together which eifects a corresponding movement to the levers 8, whereupon the sleeve or ferrule 10 is telescoped over the levers 8 and detachably engaged therewith.
lVhat is claimed is .1. A holder of the character described comprising a pair of crossed pivotally connected members formed with semi-tubular end portions constituting jaws and levers, a sleeve detachably telescoped over said levers for holding the jaws closed and adapted to receive a pencil therebetween, and an elethreads formed on the other pair of semi-- tubular end portions, an internally threaded sleeve adapted to telescope over the externally threaded semi-tubularend portions for detachable engagement therewith, and an element engageable in the sleeve and having an awl and an eraser. I
3. A holder of the character described comprising a pair of pivotally connected members, each formed with semi-tubular end portions, internal ribs formed on one pair of semi-tubular end portions, external screw threads formed on the otherpair of semi-tubular end portions, an internally threaded sleeve adapted to telescope over the externally threaded semi-tubular end portions for detachable engagement therewith, and an element engageable in the sleeve and having an awl and an eraser, said element being formed with spaced threads for permitting the detachable reversible engagement thereof in the sleeve.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature hereto.
AUGUST KLINGELE.
