Description
C. W. BUVEE. COLLAPSIBLE BARREL. APPLICATION men AUG.9, 1915.
Patented May 25, 1920.
s'r a2.
GHANGY "W. BOVEE, OF STEVENSVILLE, NEW YORK.
atinos.
Application filed August 9, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GHANCY VJ. Bovnn, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Stevensville, in the county of Sullivan and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Barrels, or which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to new and useful. improvements in crates, barrels and the like and has particular reference to an improved and novel type of collapsible barrel for use in shipping fruits and the like.
The primary object of my invention is to provide a collapsible barrel having an improved and novel structure whereby a barrel may be quickly and easily set up or knocked-down as desired.
Another object of my invention is to provide a collapsible barrel which, when in knock-down position occupies very little space and facilitates the shipment of a plurality of barrels either for original use or when returning the barrels empty.
A further object of my invention is to provide a barrel of the class described which is cheaply yet strongly constructed, durable, and one which may quickly be set up for use.
Other objects and advantages to be derived from the use of my improved collapsible barrel will appear from the following detailed description and the claim, taken with an inspection of the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a barrel set up, embodying the improvements of my invention;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmental vertical sectional view of a portion of the barrel showing the manner of securing the bottom and head of the barrel;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective view of one of the staves; and
Fig. t is a fragmental perspective view of a modified form of one of the staves.
Referring more particularly to the draw inc. wherein similar characters of reference designate like and corresponding parts throughout the various views, 1 designates in its entirety the body of my improved barrel, said body beino; formed of a plurality of staves 2. said staves being; carried by a pluralitv of hoops 3 and 4 having hook and loop connections 5, respectively, on their free Specification of Letters Patent.
within the body of the barrel.

ends. The staves 2 are connected to the hoops 3 and a by means of rivets, screws or the like 7.
The bottom of the barrel is designated 8 and is prefe "ably circular being receivable Certain of the staves 2 are provided with spring catch members 9 having heads 10 on the lower free ends thereof, said catch members being riveted or otherwise secured as it 11 to the staves. The stave is provided with a recess 12 to accommodate the lower free end of the catch member 9 when the same is depressed. The bottom 8 oi. the barrel is provided with recesses, one of which is shown and designated 13 to accommodate the upper portions of the catch members when the barrel bottom is being inserted into position.
The upper free ends of the staves are provided with inner tapering surfaces designated 14, the head of the barrel, designated 15 being receivable within the barrel on said tapering; surfaces. An expansion ring 16 is receivable on top of the head 15 to retain the same in position. in this connection, it may be here noted that the bottom 8 and head 15 are arranged in the sides or body of the barrel at points beyond the engagement of the hooks therewith and in proximity to the opposite ends thereof. Hence, slight flexinnof the opposite portions of the staves forming the barrel sides or body will be permitted and in consequence, the engaging of the head 15 with its respective end of the barrel will be facilitated and also a positive connection between the same and the barrel sides will be permitted. while possible necessary adjustment of the bottom 8 with respect to the lower portions of the barrel sides and the catch members 10 will be aided.
As shown in Fig. 1 the staves are in relative spaced relation to permit ventilation of the barrel, in the event that fruit or other perish able articles are to be carried therein. In t. one of the staves which is designated by the numeral 17, is provided with a plurality of longitudinally spaced air openinogs 18 therethrourrh. so as to facilitate ventilation of the barrel.
It is thought that the use of my improved barrel will clearly appear from the foredescription. but I desire to lay particular stress upon the tact that any number of staves and hoops may be employed. The barrels may be constructed short and wide as shown in Fi 1, or may be long" and narnarrow, or, in fact, any configuration. To collapse a barrel, the top and bottom are removed, by releasing the expansion ring 16 from over the top, and prying the same out, and forcing back the catch members that hold the bottom in position, so that the bottom may be allowed to drop from the barrel. lhen the loop connections between the adj acent ends of the hoop are disconnected, whereupon the various sections of the barrel may be taken apart and hence the same knocked down.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it
is thought that a clear and comprehensive understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of my invention may be had, and while I have shown and described the device as embodying a specific structure, I desire that it be understood that such changes may be made in said structure as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 1-- A barrel including a body formed of a plurality of staves, the ends of the staves being tapered outwardly, a barrel head having a beveled edge for frictionally engaging the tapered ends of the staves, and an annular inclined expansion ring adapted to engage the barrel head and having a relatively sharp outer edge at its largest diameter for sighting engagement with the tapered ends of the staves and disposed with its sides in clined away from the said tapered ends for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature hereto.
CHANCY W. BOVEE.
