. AIR-PUMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 25, 1920.
Application led August 13, 1919. Serial No. 317,258.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, EnwiN GRIESBAUM, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city oi St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Air-Pumps, of which the 'following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The present invention relates to air pumps, and especially to such pumps adapted for use in inflating automobile tires, or other pneumatic tires.
The primary object of the invention is to afford a simple, and practical method of constructing such pumps, whereby the pump may be readily assembled or disassembled for the purpose of repair, or replacing of parts.
Another object is to produce such pump with certain novel features of construction in order to cheapen the cost of the pump and strengthen the structure thereof. l
In the drawings Figure 1 is a vertical, sectional detail showing the mounting of one of the tube caps and air outlet valve;
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on the line 2-2 in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a complete assembled pump;
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of the pump as shown in Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a detail showing a method of stamping out the Jr'oot from sheet metal.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, my invention consists of a relatively large tube 9 and a relatively small tube 10 located parallel to one another upon the Jfoot or base 11. Said tubes are interiorly connected at their base portion through an air channel 14, which may be formed in the base housing- 37. Within the tubes 9 and 1() are mounted air compressing pistons 12 and 13 at the lower end of the piston rods 21 and 22. The piston in the larger tube 9 being adapted to force the air downwardly with the down stroke ot the pump, while the piston in the smaller tube 10 is adapted to Jorce the air upwardly with the up stroke of the pump. The piston f the larger tube is composed of a leather washer 15 with its periphery inclined downwardly and locked between two metal washers 16 and 17, thus adapting the piston to compress air on the down stroke of the pump.
To secure these washers in place, a pin 18 is inserted through the rod 21, at the lower end of which said piston is mounted, while the lower end 2O of the rod is riveted over. Similarly, the leather washer 23 ot' the small piston 13 is positioned between the metal washers 24 and 25 with a pin 26 inserted through the piston rod 22 at the upper side of the piston and with the lower end 27 ot' the piston rod 22 being riveted over. rThe leather washer 23 is positioned with its periphery upwardly inclined so as to adapt the piston to compress air on the up stroke of the pump. The top cap 28 is adapted to snugly lit over the top end of the large tube 9, and is secured in place thereon by means of set screws 29. An air inlet port 45 is cut through said top cap 28. The top cap 30 is adapted for threaded engagement with the top of the small tube 10. A double handle 31 is mounted at the top of the piston rods 21 and 22 by means of encircling ferrules 33 and 34 which are pinned to the upper ends of said rods by thepins 35 and 36. The base housing 37 may be W stamped from a single piece of metal so as to torni housings for the lower ends of the tubes 9 and 10, in which housings they are mounted by means of set screws 38 and 39, or they may be threaded and thus secured in place. This base housing 37 is so formed as to afford a connecting air passage 14 for connecting the interior of the tubes 9 and 10 at their lower end. The base or foot 11 is likewise stamped from a single piece of sheet metal with annular flanges 41 and 42 turned upwardly and over to engage the outstanding flanges 43 and 44 of the base housing 37.
The top cap `30 acts also as a housing for the packing washer 46, which washer slidingly engages the piston rod 22 and sets upon the upper end of the tube 10, being so formed and positioned that there is certain play between the said upper end of the tube 10 and the top cap 30. Transverse notches 47 and 48 are cut in the edges of said washers at diametrically opposite points, one for the purpose of permitting air to pass through the pump, and the other to engage the pin 49 to prevent the washer turning. This washer is so positioned within the housing of the top cap 30 that one of the notches as 47 will stand in alinement with the mouth 52 of the outlet pipe 53, thus permitting the passage of air. A packing 50 surrounds the piston rod 22 between'the washer 46 and the cap 30. A ball valve 5l is mounted in the mouth 52 of the outlet pipe 53.
This pump is thus simply put together and may be quickly disassembled for repairing; the construction for housing the packing is quite simple compared to the pumps now on the market; andthe method of mounting the handle and pistons is simple yet strong.
"While I have herein described a certain specific' manner and method of Constructing and assembling the elements of my invention, it isunderstood that I may vary from the same in minor details, not departing from the spirit of my invention, so as best to construct a practical device Jfor the purpose intended, as dened in the appended claims.
I/Vhat I claim to be new and patentable is:
`l. In combination with an air pump, a housing for the base thereof, same being stamped from a single piece of sheet metal;
an extended annular flange formed upon said housing; air channels formed in said housing to lead air in and out of the pump proper; and a foot portion likewise stamped from a single piece of sheet metal, and having outstanding flanges adapted to be turned up over the extended annullarflange on the housing7 to lock the two together.
2. In combination with an air pump, a housing for the "base thereof, Asame being stamped from .a single piece of sheet metal; an extended annular flange formed upon said housing; air channels formed in said housing to lead air in and out ofthe pump proper; a Vfoot-portion likewise stamped from a single ,piece of sheet metal, and having outstanding flanges adapted to be turned up over the `extended annular flange on the housing, to locky the two together; and means for securing the housing to the pump proper.
