ADJUSTABLE SCREEN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 25, 1920.
Application filed September 29. 1919. Serial No. 327,024.
which are of changeable size, and has for its object to provide an adjustable window screen which may be adapted to window frames of different sizes and which is both simple in manner of construction and operation and inexpensive in cost of manufacture. The above and other objects will become apparent in the description below, in which like characters of reference refer to likealned parts on the drawings. 7
Referring briefly to the drawings, Figure 1. is a front elevational view of our adjustable screen.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. i Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referring now in detail to the drawings, the numeral 1 represents the frame of one section" of our adjustable screen, and the numeral 2 the other frame thereof. The rear frame 2 is provided with overlapping projecting members 5 and 6, which grip the upper and lower frame members of the screen 1. Thus said member 5 overlaps and grips member 8. It is thus apparent that the frame 1 readily slides in said overlapping members 5 and 6 so that the total length of the screen may be varied to suit the window in which it is placed. We have illustrated a two-part adjustable screen, though it is apparent that, without departing from the spirit of our invention, three or more parts may be used in the same manner.
We provide releasable locking means comprising a wing or thumb screw 7 rotatably ithread engagement with said beaks.
mounted in the beak portions of the mem- 'bers 5 and 6, said screws having screw- The bases of said screws, that is, the parts which ngage the opposite frame, are broadened to provide disks 11, so that the tightening force upon the screw is spread over a greater area upon the frame 8, for instance, thus preventing crushing of the material composing that frame. The stem of said screw "is indicated by 12. If desired, to further prevent such damage, a layer of rubber or the like 9 ma be provided over the surface 8.
After our screen has been extended, or retracted, to the desired length, the 's crews 7 are tightened so as to clamp the frames of the opposite screen member and thus retain the whole as one solid screen.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows:
In a device of the class described a plurality of sections having frame members containing screens, means for slidably retaining said members in adjustable position, said means consisting in having the upper and lower frame members of one of said sections extended and overlapping the corresponding frame members of an adjacent section, the latter adapted to slide in the former, and means for locking said sections in position comprising wing screws rotatable in the said frame members in said firstnamed section, said screws passin through said frame members and the steiis thereof engaging said corresponding frame members, the ends of said stems being widened and having tips of rubber thereon, said tips adapted to be clamped against said corresponding frame members.
Signed at Expedit, in the county of Cambria and State of Pennsylvania, this 22nd day of Sept, A. D. 1919.
ANDREW MANYAK. MARY MANYAK.
