I also so constructv the clamp that one end thereof may be shortened by cutting he material adjacent the log and forming anew log by a bending operation by means of hand tools. I also provide means Whereby the clampmay be further reduced in diameter by converting it into a two part clamp having all the characteristics of a one clam-p, with the added characteristic that it may be adjusted by the change of therelstiw-epositiom of the two sections.
To permit the. clamp to be made of strip metal on flat wire, of the same width throughout. I employ a. special method of mmufacture, which avoids all waste of materialist-tho edges of the strip, thus permitfingmripmetelto be used, and effecting a substantial saving of material.
The invention consists. of a. hose clamp emhodgin ihereinthe novel features of construction ficrcinsfter set forth and described and the novel method of making same, all as more particularly pointed out in the olitimshereto appended.
Referring to the drawings Figure 1 is am elevation of one side of a hose clompmnbodying my invention;
Fig.2 is on: elevation of the other side lwriwi;
Rigs 3-is'a. section thereof on the line 3-3 02% Fig. L;
Fig. his 4 View of a. cut and pierced strip of which the clamp'is formed; and
Fig. 5 mview of said strip after it. has fumed. and is prepared for rolling EH01} itself.- asshown in Fig. 3.
Like letters refer-to like parts throughout the severed views.
Lip-the embodiment of my invention shown in thedrowings o indicates a continuous mailistrip or hand rolled upon itself, with one-seetirmcrossing the plane of the other through at substantially diamond shaped 6 intermediate the ends of seid strip or bend. Whilethe sides of the strip or a ad'acent. the opening- Z protect lie-clamp made from material which originslly was of uniform width throughout.
' The-opposite ends of the strip or band a 1 o turned substantially radially ofthe clamp to form lugs 117, each having a bolt opening therein through which the screw bolt 6 cooperating with the nut f projects. This screw bolt and nut is used for contracting the clamp to secure the desired pressure on the hose. By using short lugs, the head and nut of the screw bolt reinforce said. lugs, so as to avoid the necessity for side webs, which not only require additional metal stock at the sides of the lugs, but require special forming operations. Furthermore, the presence of such webs would preclude the use of the diamond shaped opening I), the width of which is only sullicient to permit the lug c to pass therethrough, and the band or strip to slide freely therein.
To permit the adjustment of the diameter of the clamp, I provide adjacent one of the lugs, as c, a series of bolt holes so that the end of the strip or band may he shortened, and the end thereof turned to form a new lug.
To permit further adjustment of the diameter of the clamp, I form in the length thereof a series of hooks h and a series of openings i so that by cutting the strip intermediate said hooks and said openings, the clamp may be converted into a two piece clamp having all of the characteristics of the one-piece clamp, but of considerably smaller diameter. The foregoing effect is secured by lapping the end of the section having the openings 2' therein upon the portion of the strip having the hooks h and causing the said hooks to engage the edges of the openings 2. In this manner the length of the strip forming the clamp may be decreased, thus resulting in the shortening of the entire clamp with a resultant decrease in the diameter thereof. In this manner it is possible to vary the size of any clamp to an extent beyond that possible by the use of the screw bolt 6 and the nut It will be observed that all of the openings in the clamp are surrounded by the body thereof in a manner to insure such continuity of the clampinq surface as to avoid possible leakage; and that the band is lapped upon itself in a manner to have the hearing face imperforate throughout substantially its entire length.
In order to make the clamp from a strip or band of uniform width throughout, I first cut the desired length from the ma terial of the roll and then pierce it to provide an elongated slot indicated at Fig. 4, also piercing the remaining openings at the same time. Following the cutting and piercing operations, I force the sides of the slot j outward expanding said slot j into a diamond shaped opening without materially stretching the metal except at the projecting point of'the diamond shaped opening 6, thus formed. I then turn the ends of the blank;
outwardly to form the lugs c-d and as-" soluble by rolling the blank upon itself and passing the lug 0 through the central portion of the diamond. V
The manner of applying the clamp to a hose and adjustin its diameter will be apparent from the oregoing description.
It is not my intention to claim broadly a one-piece hose clamp, one portion of which crosses the plane of the other to form a helix, this being old in the art. I believe it to be new, however, to.,provide a. clamp which is so ronstructed as to be of substantially the same width throughout excepting as to a laterally expanded'portion forming a substantially diamond shaped opening so as to permit the production of a clamp of a strip of uniform width.
Having described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to have protected by Letters Patent is l. hose clamp formed of a continuous strip or band of substantially the same width throughout and having the ends thereof turned at an angle to form straight narrow lugs having bolt openings therethrough, said strip having in the length thereof a slot with the metal on opposite sides thereof forced outwardly to form therein a substantially diamond shaped opening, said strip being wound upon itself with one end of the strip or band passed through said opening to cause one portion of the strip or band to cross the plane of another portion thereof and present a clamping area in substantially the same circular plane throughout, and take up means operative upon said lugs.
2. A hose clamp formed of a continuous strip or band of substantially the same width throughout and having the ends thereof turned at an angle to form straight narrow lugs having bolt openings therethrough, said strip having in the length thereof a slot with the metal on opposite sides thereof forced outwardly to form therein a substantially diamondshaped opening, said strip being wound upon itself with one end of the strip or band passed through said opening to cause one portion of the strip or band to cross the plane of another portion thereof, and present a clamping area in substantially the same circular plane throughout, said strip or band on one side of said opening having a series of bolt openings whereby the strip may be shortenedand the end thereof turned to form an end lug having a bolt opening therein, and take up means operative upon said lugs. V
3. A hose clamp formed'of a continuous strip or band of substantially the same width throughout and having the ends thereof turned at an angle to form straight narrow lugs having bolt openings there- ,through, said strip having in the length thereof a slot with the metal on opposite sides thereof forced outwardly to form therein a substantially diamond shaped opening, said strip being wound upon itself with one end of the strip or band passed through said opening to cause one portion of the strip or band to cross the plane of another portion thereof and present a clamping area in substantially the same circular plane throughout, said strip having on one side thereof a series of projections and a series of openings adapted to be engaged by said projections whereby the strip may be cut into two sections and said two sections may be united to form a continuous clamp of small diameter, and take up means operative upon said lugs.
a. A hose clamp formed of a continuous strip or band of substantially the same width throughout and having the ends thereof turned at an angle to form straight narrow lugs having bolt openings therethrough, said strip having in the length thereof a slot with the metal on opposite sides thereof forced outwardly to form therein a substantially diamond shaped opening, said strip being wound upon itself with one end of the strip or band passed through said opening to cause one portion of the strip or band to cross the plane of another thereof, and present a clamping area in substantially the same circular plane throughout, said strip or band on one side of said opening having a series of bolt openings whereby the strip may be shortened and the end thereof turned to form an end lug having a bolt opening therein, said strip having on one side thereof a series of projections and a series of openings adapted to be engaged by said projection whereby the strip may be out into two sections and said two sections may be united to form a continuous clamp of small diameter, and take up means operative upon said lugs.
In witness whereof I have hereunto afiixed my signature, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 13th day of April, 1916.
