AUTOMATIC AND INTEBMITTENT BRANDEB FOR SOCKET SEWER-PIPE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL BATLINER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic and Intermittent Branders for Socket Sewerllipe; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to bra nders for clay pipe such as is employed for drains,'sewerages, and the like, and the markingmechanism is particularly adapted for impressing indicia upon the plastic surface of a freshly formed clay pipe so that when the pipe is burned in the kiln, the impression will be a permanent part thereof.
It is a comparatively easy matter to impress a suitable mark upon a pipe of uniform diameter, but where the pipe is formed with a bell or enlargement to receive the end of an-adjacent pipe, certain dii'liculties. have to be overcome and one is the provision of means for'maintaining the brander out of contact with the pipe until the hell or enlarged portion of the forming pipe has passed the brander.
Sewer pipe with bell-shaped ends has been manufactured for a comparatively long period of time, but so far as I am aware, such pipe has not been successfully branded except by hand, and no device known to me is capable of being mechanically operated to intermittently move a ribbon brander out of engagement with the pipe, during thetime the bell-shaped end is moving past the plane in which the brander swings.
My invention contemplates the provision of means whereby the brander will come in contact only with the major portion of the pipe and remain out of branding position until the bell has moved a determined. distance away from the extruding end of the machine.

The pipe forming machine is shown as consisting of a press 1, having a bell-shaped discharge portion 2, by means of which the bell-shaped end 3, of the pipe 4c, may be formed. Below the discharge end of the press 1S a socket former 5, which may be raised and lowered through suitable mechanism connected to the rod 6. i
It is desired to brand or impress indicia upon the portion a, of the pipe and to this end I have provided a brander mechanism which has a normal tendency to move into pipe engaging position. I have shown the mechanism as conveniently supported by thepipe forming mechanism and as conveniently suspended from a single bolt or fastening device 7, which may engage a portion of the pipe forming mechanism. and support the yoke 8, to which the side bars 9, and 10, of the brander supporting bracket arm are pivoted by the pivot member 11. The arms 9, and 10, are spaced apart but are held rigidly together by the fastening devices 12, and 13, there being spacing sleeves 1 .2 and 15, on the fastening devices between the arms 9 and 10, as best seen in Fig. II. The arm 9 and 10, straddle a horizontally extending bolt or rod 16, threaded into the wall of the bell-shaped portion of the pipe forming'machine, and provided at one end with nuts 17, between which and the arms 9 and 10, is an expansion spring 18, expanding in the direction of the pipe so that there will be anormal tendency for the arms 9 and 10, to move toward the pipe. The arms 9 and 10, constitute a bracket frame for supporting the brander 19, which is shown as a rotatable wheel mounted on the oifset portion 20, of the arms and carried by a suitable shaft 21. The wheel 19 may be overloaded at one side if desired so that when the brander is moved into branding position, the brand will start at the beginning. The lower ends of the arms 9 and 10, and, therefore, the lower portion of the bracket, is inclined outwardly as at 22, away from the axis of the pipe forming chamber, and the inclined portion 22, is adapted to be engaged by an adjustable finger 23, on the bracket arm 24, carried by the rod 6.
When the'parts are in the position shown in FigLI and the bell-shaped portion ofthe pipe has moved to the position illustrated, the finger 23, will have moved away from contact with the brandcr element-carried bracket so that the spring will move the wheel into contact with 4. If, however, the plunger 3, moves toward the bell-shaped portion of the machine, the finger 23, will ride up the inclined portion 22 and onto the bracket arm or frame formed by the arms 9 and 10, and move the brander element-carried bracket far enough to one side so that it will not come in contact with the bell portion of the pipe.
- What I claim and desire to secure byLetters-Patent is:
1. In combination, a clay pipe forming machine provided with a reciprocatory table to receive the pipe, a pivoted, depending bar adjacent to the pipe forming machine and having a lower curved end, a pipe brander wheel carried by the bar intermediate its ends, a spring normally exerting force against the bar to move thewheel into branding position, and means carried by the table for moving the bar in opposition to the spring. 7 Y

In combination, 'a pipe forming machine having a reciprocatory table, a pivoted, depending bar adjacent to the machine and having a lower curved end, a pipe brander wheel carried by the bar intermediate its ends, a spring normally exerting force against thebar to move the wheel into branding position, and means on the reciprocatory table for intermittently moving the bar in a direction to oppose the spring,
8. In combination, a clay pipe forming machine having a reciprocatory table, a pivmachine having a reciprocatory table, a de pending bar having a curved end, a pipe brander carried by the pivoted bar, a later ally supported spring bearing against the outer edge of said bar to force it in the di-,
rection of the discharge endof the pipe forming machine, and means carried by the reciprocatory table for engagement with the curved end of the bar to move it away from the discharge end of the pipe forming machine.
5. In combination, a clay pipe forming machine provided with a reciprocatory ta? ble to receive the pipe, a depending bar pivoted above the table, said bar having longitudinal slot, a pipe brander carried by'the bar, a laterally projecting rod carried by the pipe forming machine and projecting through the slot in the bar, a head or collar on the free end of said rod, a coil spring interposed between the collar or head and one edge of the bar to urge the pipe brander into functional position, and means carried by the reciprocatory table for moving the bar and pipe brander out of functional posi- 7 tion and against the action of the spring:
