Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed, August, 1919. Serial No. 315,581.
not beendesirable for the reason that when the suits become wet the water drains to the bottom of the garment causing increased weight at the bot-tom of the garment which acts to sag or pull the crotch portionv of the garment away from the crotch of the wearer, thereby producing a baggy and uncomfortable feeling, the same also being unsightly in appearance. With the exception of the above mentioned fault a yone-piece bathing suit is especially desirable since it prevents any separation at the waist line between the body portion and the leg portion as occurs when bathing suits made of separate body and leg portions are worn,
One object of my invention is to prevent the above mentioned bagging, or dropping of the crotch of a one-piece bathing suit or Vsuit in which the body portion is connected to the leg portion, thereby enabling a person to enjoy the advantage of a one-piece suit without the above mentioned discomfort.
Another object is to so construct my invention that it can be made quickly and cheaply and will be durable.
lThese objects, and other advantageous ends which will be described hereinafter, l attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which- Y Figure 1 is a front elevation of a one-piece bathing suit made in accordance with my invention,
Fig. 2 is any enlarged sectional elevation taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary enlarged elevation showing a portion of my improved bathing suit looking at the inner face of the back of said bathing suit, and
Fig. l is an enlarged section taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings, my improved .to the inner face 16 of the back 12- bathing suit 5 includes integral body and' leg portions 6 and 'T which are made of knitted fabric, such for example as knitted worsted, the legV portions having a closed crotch 8. `The garment is preferably openy down to the waist line, asf shown at 9, and may be provided with any fastening'means, such for example as the buttons 10. A collar 11extends across the back 12 and downwardly to form the 4opening 9 in the front, as vclearly shown in Fig. 1. A strip 13, which is preferably made of a woven fabric including warp and weft threads, is sewed by stitching 14 adjacent each of its edgers le strip 13 extends down the back 12 from the collar 11 to the crotch 8. This Ystrip 13 is of sufficient strength throughout its length to prevent the knitted mate-rial between the crotch 8 and the collar 11 from stretching,
due to the weight of the water capable of being absorbed by the suit when worn in the water. ln other words, the strip 13 is nonstretching or cannot be stretched in the direction of its length by the weight of water absorbed by the knitted body and leg portions 6 and 7 of the garment. In some instances, such for example as in childrens garments, I prefer to make the strip 13 of material which is in itself non-stretching in the direction of its length. In other instances, however, such for example as in adults bathing suits, I can make the strip 13 of a strong piece of elastic fabric, such for example as the elastic fabric used in the making of mens Suspenders. However, whether a completely non-stretching strip is used or whether an elastic strip is used, it will be understood that the strip 13 is nonstretching in the direction of its length, due to the weight of the water absorbed in the garment. The advantage in having the strip 13 made of elastic material is that it permits the wearer of tlie bathing suit to bend over without any uncomfortable result, since even though the elastic strip would be incapable of stretching to permit the crotch to drop or sag, due to the weight of absorbed water in the knitted fabric, it is capable of temporarily stretching, due to the muscular action of the body of the wearer when the wearer stoops over. However, l preferably make the strip 13 of non-stretching cloth, such for example as woven cotton, silk, linen or the like, psince under ordinary conditions suicient slipping is permitted to allow a person to move the body without any uncomfortable feelingr. Y. s
The fact that the strip 13 extends from the uppermost part ofthe body portion to the crotch and also `the fact that the suit Y is, supported on the shoulders of the wearer Y serves to prevent the stretching of the porf tion of the suit to which the strip 13 is secured and always holds Ysaid portion in a similar position with respect to the shoulders ofthe wearer. Thus the crotch 8, being connected to said non-stretching strip, will always be held in the same position with respect'to 'the shoulders of the wearer and no matter how much Vwater is kabsorbed by the suit, rthe weightV of that vwater-cannot pull the crotch .Seaway fromthe crotch of the wearer andthe garmentr therefore always ts neatly and snugly and is always comfortable; Further than this, the suit is held in shape Yso that it is always neat in appearance. Y
While I have described my inventionas taking. a particular form, it will be understood that the various parts ofmy invention may be changed without rdeparting from the spirit thereof, and hence Ido notlimit myself to the precise construction setk forth, but consider that I am at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly come within the scope of the appended claims.
Havingv thus4 described my invention,
what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A closed crotch knitted garment having integral knitted body and leg portions; and a strip secured to said garment adjacent its back and extending downwardly -to the crotch, said strip being of sullicient tensile strength in the direction of its length to pre- ,vent the crotch from moving downward to an unsightly or uncomfortable position relative to the shoulders of the kgarment due to the weight of the garment when saturated with water; substantially as described.
