UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Aaron 1v. "HORNUNG, 01? Los ANGELES CALIFORNIA COLD-STORAGE-DOOR ADJUSTABLE HINGE.
To all 1w hom it may concern Be it known that I, ANTON N. HonNUNG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Cold-Storage-Door Adjustable Hinge, of which the following 1s a Cold storage door closures are necessarily thick and heavy and are required to close tightly upon gaskets. Said closures are constructed with an outside flange to rest upon a gasket that surrounds the orifice into which the main body of the closure extends; the outer portion of the closure projecting over the face of the casing around the openin n in object of this invention is to provide a hinge for doors of this kind which may be easily applied in hanging the door when the closure is set in position, and which will invariably hold the closure to true posi- I tion when the door is closed and locked or latched, and which will allow the door to be freely opened without interference from the flange that projects to cover a portion of the casing outside of the opening which the closure is intended to close.
I accomplish this object by providing a hinge comprising a mounting adapted to be attached to the casing, a mounting adapted to be attached to the closure, a coupling pivotally connected to said mountings, and adjustable means adapted to cooperate with the pivot of the mounting on the door closure to hold the coupling in rigid relation to the closure.
The invention is capable of embodiment in various ways and I do not limit myself to any specific embodiment although the invention includes a specific embodiment which I shall more particularly set forth and claim herein.
Objects of the invention are simplicity of construction and ease of adjustment.
Other objects, advantages and features of invention may appear from the accompanying drawing, the subjoined detailed description and the appended claims.
The accompanying drawing illustrates the invention.
Figure 1 is a view of the invention applied to a cold storage door, which is shown closed and latched.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmental view of one of the hinges shown in Fig. 1.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented MaylS, 1920.
] Application filed March 2, 1920. Serial No. 363,093.
Fig. 3 is a fragmental' sectional elevation showing the hinge in use in connection with a cold storage structure. .Line a Fig. 2 indicates the plane'of section.
Fig. 4: is a perspective view of the hinge detached. r
The mounting 1 is adapted to be attached to the casing 2 and comprises a base plate 3 secured by screws 41 to the casing 2 and provided with lugs 5 having bearings 6 for the hinge pin or pivot 7. The base 3 is in two parts and each part is provided with apair of pintle lugs 5 and bearings 6. The closure mounting 8 is preferably formed with a base in the form of a strap 9 provided with lugs 10 having holes 11 that act as bearings for the coupling pivot 12. The coupling 18 comprises a yoke 14 having end bearings in the form of eyes 15 carried by the pivots 7 and also provided with an intermediate eye or bearing 16 for the pivot 12 of the coupling bearing. Said yoke is provided on opposite sides of the eye or coupling bearing 16 with set screws 17, 18 adapted to engage the closure mounting; and, in cooperation with the coupling pivot or pin 12, affording means to hold the coupling in rigid relation to said closure mounting.
Said set screws are threaded through the coupling on opposite sides of the eye 16. Nut locks 21 are provided upon the set screws between the jam nuts and the coupling to prevent accidental loosening of the set screws.
In practice,"the hinge parts will all be assembled as shown in the drawing; that is to say, the casing mounting will be pivoted to the eyes of the coupling and the closure mounting will be pivoted to the eye of the closure mounting. Then closure 22 will be inserted in the opening 23, the casing mounting will be secured to the casing 22 by suitable means as the screws 4, and the closure mounting will be secured to the closure by the screws 24:- Then the set screws will be adjusted to tight engagement with the closure mounting, thus making the coupling and the closure mounting rigid to each other. The adjustment of the coupling to hold the closure in position to compress the gaskets 25 may be made at any time when the closure is in closed position.
It is thus seen that by this means it is immaterial to what extent the closure projects outward beyond the casing, within the range,
of the hinge when free from interference of the set screws and that when the set screws are tightly screwed home against the closure mounting, the connection is rigid between the closure and the pivoting means carried by the door casing.
The mounting and coupling may be made of malleable castings or may beotherwise p od ced In the drawings I have shown washers 27 on the pivots or pins to insure smooth operation.
The closure pivot 12 may be removed by driving 'it up thus readily detaching the closure from the coupling in case it is for any reason desired so to do.
I Cla m 1. A hinge comprising a mounting adapted to be attached to a casing; a mounting adapted to be attached to a closure and provided with spaced lugs between its ends;
a coupling pivotally connected to the casing mounting; a pivot pivoting the coupling between the lugs; means on opposite sides of the lugs to engage the mounting; and means comprising a mounting adapted to be attached to a casing; a mount- 'ing adapted to be attached to a closure; a
coupling pivotally connected to the casing -mounted and to the closure mounting; and
set screws on opposite sides of the bearings of the closure mounting to hold the coupling in rigid relation to said door closure.
3. The combination with a yoke having at its ends two hinge bearings and having intermediate said ends a hinge bearing a door mounting, pins for theterminal bearings of he y ke and a pin fo e inte ediate hinge bearing of the yoke; said yoke being provided with a tongue; and set screws through the yoke and tongue respectively to hold the yoke in rigid relation to the door mounting. r V
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand at v.Os Angeles, California, this 20th day of February, 1920,
ANT-ON N. HORNUNG.
Witness n i JAMES R. TOWNSEND.
