PROCESS FOR CONSTRUCTING AIR-PUMPS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 18, 1920.
Application filed April 28, 1919. Serial No. 293,120.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREAS M. SoNNIoH- SEN a citizen of the United States, residing at (ihicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Processes for Constructing Air-Pumps, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to air pump construction and has for its object the production of a process, through the medium of which, an air pump may be readily and economically constructed in which the possibility of leakage from the pump cylinder will be reduced to a minimum.
A further object is the production of a process of air pump construction as mentioned which will result in the production of a pump structure possessing great strength and rigidity, and one in which the liability of separation of the component parts will be rendered extremely remote. Other objects will appear hereinafter.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a partially sectional side eleva tion of an air pump constructed in accordance with my process;
Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and- Fig. 3 is a sectional view illustrating the relative proportion of the pump cylinder and base socket before the parts are con nected together.
The air pump shown in the drawings comprises a base 4 which is formed centrally on its upper side with an annular boss or flange 5, in which is rovided an upwardly opening annular soc et 6.
Arising from said base is a cylinder 7, the lower end of which is seated in socket 6. In said cylinder is provided the usual piston 8 carried at the lower end of a rod 9, the upper end of which projects exteriorly through an end piece or head 10, the rod being provided with an operating handle 11.
Formed in the base 4 leading from the bottom of cylinder 7 is an outlet air passage 12 which terminates in a valve housing or fitting 18 provided with a coupling 14 for connection with a hose 15. In the member 13 is provided a conventional check valve 16 which prevents flow of air toward the cylinder.
The process forming the subject matter of this invention resides in the method of connection between the base 4 and cylinder 7. To carry out this process the socket 6 is formed of an outer diameter slightly less than the external diameter of the lower end of the cylinder, the inner diameter of said socket being substantially the same as the internal diameter of said cylinder. In practice, the external diameter of the cylinder is approximately two one thousandths of an inch greater than the outer diameter of said socket, the difference in size or proportion of said cylinder and socket being emphasized in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
In carrying out my process, the base 4 and cylinder 7 are forced together under'great pressure, causing the lower end of the cylinder to enter socket 6, said cylinder end being compressed or reduced in thickness in entering said socket. This being the case, it is apparent that when the cylinder has been finally forced into operative position in socket 6, as seen in Fig. 1, an extremely firm and rigid connection between the base and the cylinder will be effected and one which will reduce the possibility of leakage and separation of the parts to a minimum.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: r
1. The process for constructing an air pump having a base and a cylinder, which consists in providing said base with an annular socket having an outer diameter less than the external diameter of said cylinder, and then forcing the parts together to cause one end of said cylinder to enter said socket.
2. The process for constructing an air pump having a base and a cylinder, which consists in providing said base with an annular socket having an outer diameter less than the external diameter of said cylinder, and having an inner diameter substantially the same as the internal diameter of said cylinder, and then forcing the parts together to cause one end of said cylinder to enter said socket.
3. The process for constructing an air pump having a base and a cylinder, which consists in providing said these with an annular socket of a size less than that of one end of said cylinder, and then forcing the parts together to cause said cylinder end to enter said socket.
4:. A process for constructing an air pump having a base and a cylinder, which consists in providing ,said base with an annular socket of a size less than that of one end of said cylinder, and then forcing the parts together under great pressure, compressing 10 AN DREAS M. SON NIOHSEN.
