To all whomz't may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY E. PELLETIER, a citizen of the United States,residing in the city of Newark, county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pumps, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make, construct, and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to numerals of reference marked thereon, forming a part of this specification.
, My. invention relates to improvements in pumps, more particularly to'sealing devices for pumps and the like, and. the invention consists in the combinations, arrangements and constructions. herein described and claimed.
The paramount object of my invention is to provide a very simple pump, in which no bolts are required in order to obtain a strong and durable construction, and in which no sealing gaskets are required in order to secure fluid-tight unions. M invention has for a further object to prouce a construction of the above character which ma embody aneccentric or a cam drive, and 1t embodies improved means for-adjusting such drive.
For a full understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description, and as well to the illustrative embodiment shown in the accompanying drawing which represents a central vertical section through a structure made in accordance with my invention.
In carrying out my invention, I provide an eccentric casing 1, cast in one piece, and
having a relatively large opening 2 in its front mead, a relatively long bearing 3 in its back head, and a relatively large opening 4 in its top periphery. The openings 2 and 4 are circular in form and are screw-threaded. The bearing 3 is located in axial rela.
a cylinder 5, cast also in one piece, and having an open bottom end 6, which provides direct communication with the interior of the eccentric casing 1; and it will be understood from an inspection of the drawing that the cylinder is thus secured to the eccentric casing in vertical position, and centrally thereof, so that the axial center of. the
,former would cross the axial center of the latter at right-angles. Where the screwthreaded union occurs, the cylinder is provided with a flange 7, designed to engage over the outersurface of the eccentric casmg; and at the region 8, adjacent this flange, both edges of the union are correspondingly tapered with a view of making a fluid-tight o1nt.
The top or head end 9 of the cylinder is made relatively thick and is provided. vertically therethrough with two openings 10 and 11, suitable for receiving the valves 12 and 13, respectively. Each valve has its main body portion screw-threaded in its opening, and has also, adjacent the screw threads, a tapering portion 14, countersunk in the head to make a fluid-tight connection.
The valve 12 is a suction valve and may be of any ordinary type, through which gas or fluid can be drawn into the compression chamber 15, from an intake pipe 16. The valve13 commands the exhaustof the gas or fluid, an operation accomplished through an outlet pipe 17. This valve is of the spring-pressed rotary type, and its peculiar features of construction are set forth fully in my application for patent, filed March first, 1920, Serial No. 362,464. It is sufficient here to state that this valve includes a compression spring 18, which normally holds the tapering valve 19 in its seat, the said spring yielding under suflicient pressure exerted on the valve proper, to permit the unseating of the latter, for the discharge of gas orfluidQ The cylinder 5 contains the usual piston head 20, which forms a partition between the combustion chamber 15 and the interior 21 of the eccentric casing. 22 is the connecting rod; and 23 the eccentric. collar which operatively embraces an eccentric 24, engaged on the shaft 25, which is ournaled in the long bearing 3 as shown.
Screw-threaded upon the exterior portion of the long bearing 3 is a packing gland 26. The confronting sides of the packing gland 26 and the bearing 3 are tapered as at 2 7 to provide a chamber in which to confine the packing 28, of any ordinary character. The packing gland 26 has an annularrecess 29 in whichis screw-threaded the flange 30, of a covering 31. By means of these parts, thus arranged, I provide an oil chamber 32 surrounding the shaft 25, the oil being introduced into the chamber through an opening 33, which is normally closed by a screw plug: 34-. he covering 31 is provided with con centric grooves 35, receptive of corresponding-projections formed on the face of a gland 36, which, together with a pulley 37', is secured by a key 38 to the shaft 25. Adjacent the shaft 25, the confronting faces of the covering 31 and gland 36 are tapered as at 39 to provide a cavity for the packing 40, which may be of any ordinary character.
Into the opening 2 of the eccentric casing, there is screw-threaded a plug ll, formed on its inner side with an axial projection 42, having a central bore 43. Into this bore is threaded a pin 44 having a rounded end 45, designed to bear on the inner end of the shaft 25. The purpose of this arrangement is to hold the shaft 25 operatively in position, preventing it from shifting longitudinally toward the plug 41, it being observed in thisconnection that the pin 44- is limitedly adjustable so that the parts may be held in proper relative position with respect to the piston. The plug 41 isprovided at 4-6 with a tapering flange, designed to cooperate with a corresponding taper on opening 2, whereby to effect a tight union. The outer face of the plug 41 is made with a square, or otherwise non-circular projection 47, designed to receive a wrench or the like whereby to effect the turning action.
In assembling the structure, the shaft 25 with its eccentric parts is inserted through the main casing opening 2, after which the parts which co-operate to form the stuflingboxes and the oil-chamber are secured in position. The piston is then operatively connected through the top opening 4:, and the cylinder 5 applied. Lastly, the pin 44- is adjusted in the plug 41, and the latter is screwed into position.
By constructing and arranging the parts in the manner described and'illustrated, I provide a structure that is ,easyof assembly, and that avoids the employment of bolts and sealing gaskets, while securing, nevertheless, a strong and durable structure. with positively fluid-tight unions.
Experience has demonstrated that the organization above described is a highly efficient one, and while I have shown the preferred embodiment of my present invention, I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction shown and described, as obvious modifications thereof, not involving the exercise of invention, may be made by any skilled mechanic, and such departures from what is herein setforth, I consider within the scope and terms of my claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In the herein described pump construction, a one-piece eccentric casing having a front head opening, a back-head bearing projecting both'interiorly and exteriorly in alignment therewith and'a peripheral opening, a plug screw-threaded into said fronthead opening and provided with an adjusting screw, a shaft fitting said bearing and engaging said adjusting screw, a packing gland threaded on the exterior end of said bearing and forming therewith a stuffingbox for the shaft, a covering having threaded engagement with said packing gland, said covering being formed with a rim flange having screw-threaded engagement with the packing gland and forming therewith an oil well for the shaft, and a one-piece openended cylinder screw-threaded into said peripheral opening and communicating directly with the interior of the eccentric casing, and a piston in the said cylinder operatively connected with the said shaft.
