DELIVERING APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 18, 1920.
Application filed January 14, 1920. Serial No. 351,389.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MICHELANGELO BoNo, a citizen of Italy, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Delivering Apparatus, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. 7
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in delivering apparatus, and it pertains more particularly to a sanitary receptacle especially adapted for delivering toothpicks.
It is one of the primary objects of the present invention to so construct a device of this character that its delivering mechanism may be adjusted to operate to deliver one or more articles as desired.
It is another object of the invention to obtain the above result by a movement of the delivering mechanism relative to the delivery opening of the receptacle.
It is a further object of the invention to so construct the receptacle cover that it is retained in place by the adjusting means of the delivering mechanism.
With the above and other objects in View, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a side elevation partly broken away and partly in section of a device con structed in accordance with the present invention, and
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional View taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, with one of the sides of the receptacle partly broken away.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the device comprises two substantially triangular end members 5, each of which is provided with supporting legs 6. These end members 5 are retained and secured together in spaced relation by means of a bolt 7 said bolt being screw-threaded as at 8, to engage in an internally screwthreaded opening 9 in one of the end members 5. Each of these end members 5 is provided with two angularly disposed grooves 10, said grooves being formed in the inner face of the end members. Mounted in the grooves 10 of the end members 5, are the sides 11 of the receptacle, and these sides are preferably formed of glass or other transparent medium of a rigid nature.
The delivering mechanism comprises two plates 12, the outer edges of which are curved upwardly as indicated by the reference character 13. Each of these plates is provided with ears 14;, and said ears are turned around a shaft 15. This shaft 15 extends throughout the length of the receptacle and projects .beyond the side members 5, as indicated by the reference character 16. Carried by the shaft 15 and having each of its ends passed under one of the plate members of the delivering mechanism is a spring 17, and said spring serves to maintain the plates 12 of the delivering mechanism in contact with the lower edge of its respective side member 11.
Pivotally secured to the ends 16 of the shaft 15, is a yoke 20, and said yoke eX- tends upwardly around the end members 5 and across the top of the receptacle as indicated by the reference character 21. Each of the end members 5 is formed with a shoulder 22, and resting on said shoulder 22, is a removable cover 23, which cover is preferably formed of the same material as that from which the sides of the receptacle are made. The yoke 21 is provided with a screw-threaded opening 24, and having threaded engagement therewith is a bolt 25, the upper end of which is provided with an operating nut 26. The lower end of the bolt 25 is rounded as indicated by the reference character 27 and seats in the recess 28. This recess 28 is formed in a block of rubber or other suitable pliable material 29, and said rubber block rests upon the top face of the cover 23.
The device operates in the following manner:
Upon loosening the bolt 25, the cover 23 may be removed to place the toothpicks or other articles within the receptacle. After this has been accomplished, the cover is replaced and upon tightening the bolt, the' cover is forced into engagement with the shoulders 22 and is retained thereon by means of the bolt 25. With the parts in this position, it is only necessary to depress either of the plates 12, by engagement of the fingers of the operator with the curved outer edge 13 thereof and exert a downward pressure thereon. As this operation takes place, the plate will assume the position'shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, and will leave a passage, indicated by the reference character 30, through which the articles within the receptacle may pass. If the passage 30' be too large and permit of the passage of more than a single article, it is only necessary to tighten the bolt 25, whereupon the tension upon the spring 17 will be increased and the extent of 'movement of the plates 12 will be limited in such a manner that'the passageBO between the plates and the lower edges of their respective side walls of the receptacle, will be reduced to a dimension which will permit of the passage of but a single article. a
From the foregoing, it Will be apparent that the present invention provides a sanitary receptacle for toothpicks and similar articles from which a single article may be delivered if desired, and, at the same time,
H means is provided whereby the device may be adjusted to deliver more than one article. Claims: V 1. A'dispensing apparatus comprising a receptacle having an open bottom and bifur-' cated end walls, a delivering mechanism for closing the bottom of said receptacle, and a bail for supporting said delivering mechanism in operative position, said bail embracing the end walls and the top of the receptacle. V
2. 'A dispensing apparatus comprising a receptacle having an open bottom and bifurcated end alls, a delivering mechanism for closing the bottom of said receptacle, a bail for supporting the delivering mechanismin operative position,:a portion of said bail lying between the furcations of the end walls, and means for moving the bail relatively to the body of the receptacle for controlling the size of the opening presented upon operation of the delivering mechanism.
3. A dispensing apparatus comprising a receptacle having an open bottom and bifurcated end walls, a deliveringmechanism for closing the bottom of said receptacle, a bail embracing the receptacle and adapted to maintain the delivering. mechanism in operative position, and means carried by said bail andengaging the top wall of the receptacle for moving said bail relatively to the receptacle to regulate the movement of r the delivering mechanism.
means also serving to maintain the cover of the receptacle in operative position.
