GRATER.
Application filed July 26, 1924. Serial No. 728,437.
To all whom t may concer/1,:
Be it known that I, FRITZ J. E. PETERS, a citizen of Germany, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Graters; and I do hereby declare that lthe following is a full, clear, and enact description thereof.
This invention relates to graters.
Qbjects of this invention are to provide a grater which may be attached to a table top or other suitable support, which may be quickly charged or filled with the material to be grated, which may be easily operated to grate the material to the extent desired without soiling the hands of the operator and without any danger whatsoever ofabrasion from the grat-er.
Further objects are to provide a'grater which is so constructed that it may be readily cleaned, which is adapted to receive any ofV several different grater plates, and which may be easily and quickly'attachedat any desired point upon asupport.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertcial elevation partly in section of the grater.
Figure 2 is a plan view partly in section of the structure shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an enlarged detail of a portion of the grater plate and the supporting frame.
The grater comprises a standard or body portion 1 which is suitably webbed and ribbed to provide the requisite strength. This standard is provided with an upper foot 2 braced from the body portion by means of a web and is provided with an underhanging body 3 through which a clamping screw passes, thus adapting the device for attachment to a table 5 or other support.
The body portion 1 is provided with an aperture 6 therethrough which has slanting side walls 7 for a purpose hereinafter to appear. This body portion is further provided adjacent the opening 6 with an outwardly projecting bearing lug 8 to which is pivotally attached the rocking bar 9, such bar being conveniently held in place by means of the shouldered machine screw 10, as shown in Figure 1.
It is to be noted that the bottom portion of the aperture 6 is fiat and is flush with the surface of the extensive bearing or supgrater carrying frame 13.
porting surface for the oscillatory bar or Vlever 9. The outer end of this levert)` is provided with a manipulating handle 11 adapted to be grasped by the operator. The inner end of the lever 9 is riveted or otherwise secured to a projecting lug 12 of a This grater carrying frame is provided with an upstanding flange 14 upon which the grater plate 15 rests. The grater plate is preferably provided with downturned flanges 16 which lit over the flanges 14 of the frame, as Ashown in Figure 3. The lower portion of the Vflanges 16 rest upon the shoulder of the Y frame 14, as shown inFigure 3, and thus a Avery secure support is attained. 4Thebody portion or standard 1 is provided with an overhanging arm 19 which is provided with an elongated sleeve 20 and with an upstanding lug 21. The sleeve 20 slidably receives the elongated arm 22 of a U-shaped member,-the shorter arm 23 of such member being pivotally attached to the upper portion of a follower block 24. A spring 25 is interposed between the transverse yoke 26 of the U-shaped member and the lug 21 and thus urges the block or follower block 24 downwardly. The block 24 is slidably received within a tubular member 27 which is rigidly attached to the outer end of the arm 19, as shown in Figure 1. This tubular member may be of any desired shape, for instance rectangular, as shown in Figure 2, although it is apparent that other shapes may be found advantageous under certain conditions. The upper 'end of the tubular member is preferable rounded or beaded to provide a finished appearance, and the lower edges are inturned slightly, as indicated at 28. These lower edges or portions are spaced a slight distance from the grater plate 15.
In using the device, the pressure block 24 is lifted out of the member 27., and the material to be grated is placed within such member. Thereafter the pressure block is repositioned within the tubular member 27 and pressesnthe material against the grate-r platel. The operator then rocks the lever y9 by means of the handle 1l and thus rapidly grates the material without any danger vof injuring his hands. The inturned edges 28 of the tubular member 27 accurately position the material to be grated, and in addition to this, form a support for the pressure block 24 when the pressure block is in itsy lowest position, thus preventing such block from contacting with the grater plate 15. It is to be noted that the rocking bar 9 may have a relatively wide swing due to the slanting lateral walls 7 of the aperture 6 in the body portion, as shown in Figure 2.
It will be seen that a grater has been provided which may be cleaned as the grater plate 15 may be readily removed by loosening the screws 18, and which is adapted to receive anyone ot a number of different grater plates.
Further, it is to be noted that the device is compact and simple, may be cheaply manufactured, and may be readily operated.
Although the invention has been described in considerable detail, it is to be understood that the invention may be variously embodied and is, therefore, to be limited only as claimed.
`I claim:
l. The combination of a supporting standard having` an aperture therethrough, an oscillatory bar pivoted to said standard and projecting through said aperture and having a manipulating handle at its outer end, a grater supporting :trame secured to the inner end of said bar and adapted to be oscillated thereby, said frame having upstanding flanges, a grater plate adapted to rest upon said flanges and having downturned Hanges adapted to fit thereover, means for temporarily locking said grater plate to said frame, a tubular member rigidly carried by said standard above said grater plate7 and adapted to receive material to be grated therein, and a spring urged pressure block located within said tubular ymember and adapted to press such material into contact with said grater plate.
2. The combination of a supporting standard having an aperture therethrough, an oscillatory bar pivoted to said standard and projecting through said aperture and having a manipulating handle at its outer end, a grater supporting frame secured to the inner end of said bar and adaptedy to be oscillated thereby, said Jrame having upstanding flanges, a grater plate adapted to rest upon said tlanges and having downturned flanges adapted to lit thereover, means for temporarily locking said grater plate to said frame, a tubular member rigidly carried by said standard above said grater plate, and adapted to receive material to be grated therein, and a spring urged pressure block located within said tubular member and adapted to press such material into contact with said grater plate, said tubular member having int-urned lower edges adapted to prevent the passage osaid pressure block downwardly into contact with said grater plate.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee, in the county or" Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin.
